Description
(tear as in something torn or tearing something)Queen Fintear is the current Queen of the largest pod on the Northastern shore of Chimarra.
This pod lives in the least hospitable part of Chimarra's oceans, right off the coast of the salt flats and desert. The water around here is often painfully saline to a point where fish aren't always an easy source of food, like it is for any other pod.
So Fintear's pod has had to make some daring choices to survive, and while it isn't as large as the other major pods, it's definitely notable. (also it's the only pod in the harsh spot that it's in, there's no other minor pods in the area)
Most SharkScales have their eggs hatch underwater, preferably deep under too and buried under sand - but the problem this pod has is the intense salinity (especially deeper down) that is enough to kill most eggs before hatching (and don't even think about burying them under the salty sand). So this pod doesn't actually hatch their eggs underwater, instead they hide their eggs on a certain small island that's just off the Northeastern shore. Believe it or not, SharkScale eggs don't have to be completely submerged to hatch, but the parents or any dragon watching over the eggs does have to make sure the eggs are hydrated well. It's a bit more of a hassle than simply burying the eggs underwater, but this willingness to get out of the water to ensure survival is basically how this pod has managed to survive so long.
When fish are scarce, which they often are in this pod's territory, the pod has hunting parties of sorts who specifically move onto the shore and desert to catch whatever they can as food for the pod. These parties have actually gotten to a point where they're pretty regular and scheduled.
The parties move through the land and hunt mostly at night, hiding in the ShadeScale ruins or caves to keep cool during the day. This pod practically has all the resting places and hunting spots mapped out at this point, and they go about these things in a very organized way for how SharkScales normally are.
This pod is probably the most organized SharkScale pod there has ever been.
This pod makes use of the old ShadeScale villages on their hunting parties too, using old wells to keep themselves hydrated. They've also found and kept maps of Chimarra from the village along with other scrolls with any useful information they deem worth holding onto. They keep most scrolls or trinkets like that they find, on their small island.
The SharkScales in this pod are pretty hardy too, notably they're more experienced with moving on land than most other SharkScales and they're a lot more tolerant of the sun's heat, especially since they have to work with a desert to survive off of. Dehydrating is still a real threat, but this pod has managed to tough through a lot more than an average SharkScale. Most members of this pod don't actually mind getting a sunburn, and are willing to hunt a bit into the morning or before nightfall if they have to.
This pod doesn't often have members who know how to speak on land, but interestingly most members know how to read and write in the written land language, which comes in handy for making written reports that a land or sea hunting party can leave with their stash before they can head right back out hunting again.
Even though this pod puts a lot of emphasis on survival, they have a pretty low tolerance of any cannibalism of it's members. It's only allowed if the member had died or was definitely going to die at least and you needed to eat something to survive. This pod doesn't really have the same culture as the Northern pod, and most members who die are to be buried respectfully, not eaten.
Any pod member who commits wrongful cannibalism isn't tolerated for long. Let's just say their bodies will be useful for luring in scavenging seabirds to catch, at least.
Anyway, that's a lot of information on the pod.
Queen Fintear is a pretty old lady, and she's used to managing her pod and keeping everything afloat. It's not easy when you have to go out of your comfort zones to survive and some might wonder why try so hard to survive when you can live relaxed anywhere else, but to Fintear; surviving is living. And that's kind of a mentality the rest of the pod shares too.
Fintear hatched with oddly shaped fins that looked like they had been torn, which is how she got her name. (so they're not actually torn) Her scales are rough and used to being in the sun and salt every day.
Fintear spends most of her time managing the hunting parties and making sure every pod member gets enough food. She resides mostly by the small island where she can receive the written reports from all her parties, and leave any requests or notes for them to look at when they return again.
She gets pretty upset if anyone steps too out of line, especially when it's during hunting parties, because having a scarcity of food can become very serious if not addressed. Of course hunting parties and party members will take turns and are able to take breaks when they need it - Fintear just expects that when they go out hunting, they will actually hunt.
In scarcities Queen Fintear is the type to spare many of her own rations to give to her other members, especially those who will be out hunting or working. She has confidence in her ability to endure hunger at this point and doesn't want to take more than she needs during hard times. She's constantly exhausted working as the Queen, but she'll refuse sleep whenever theirs things to be done.
Queen Fintear has a daughter and two sons still alive who might take her place some day when she finally kicks to bucket - which Fintear is extremely worried about if any of them will be able to keep things in order.

Do these Sharkscales have more gray-tinted colors because of being on land/in the sun so much?

I love just how different she is from Thrashkill. There really is some contrast here!
