Description
Tunc moved forward steadily, alternating between sniffing the ground and looking up. The Sandshrew didn’t like the wastelands. There were groups of feral Pokemon in the wastelands, and the texture of the dirt didn’t feel right compared to what was on the purified areas. He guessed that must’ve been what the strange crystal tear was for. The Blue Moon Cresselia had given them out to all of the regular trainers at the cavern Tunc and the others were hatched in.Tunc heard the sound of claws scratching on the rough dirt and stone and glanced up to see that Orion had scampered back. The Sneasel was equally uncomfortable with the wastelands, even though the wrongness of the soil was lost to him. Tunc nodded. Nothing in that direction. Orion moved back to Phoebe to tell her the news.
Their trainer was behind them. Miriel, the final of Phoebe’s three starters was slung in a little backpack on the trainer’s back. Tunc didn’t have to look back to see that the Budew was frustrated by being stuck there, but it did mean they’d have someone watching from behind.
Phoebe turned to follow the route Orion had scouted out, but the final member of the group, the messenger, shook her head. “Cecil wants us to go this way,” she said.
“Alright,” said Phoebe. She sighed and scratched Orion’s head before following the more experienced trainer.
The group of five continued as the sun began to move lower in the sky. Orion had been scouting ahead more as it grew darker. He was a little more confident at night. Tunc was growing less and less confident as the party moved forward. He scratched at the soil and dug his claws into it to feel it, then removed his claws and shook them in disgust. The wrongness of the wasteland soil was more intense here. He was sure that he should stop digging whenever the group slowed enough. Still, he kept hoping he’d find a decent patch of soil. Where they were a few hours ago seemed perfectly fine compared to this.
Phoebe picked him up. “Shhh,” she said. “We’ll fix it up soon. It’ll be fine.”
The group walked into an area filled with massive chunks of rock. The messenger was slowing and put her hands into her pocket. “This is it,” she said.
Orion scampered back to the group after scouting ahead and dragged himself to a stop right in front of Phoebe. His eyes were wide, and he was panting and shaking. Phoebe put Tunc down. “You two ready?” she whispered. Her voice was shaking.
Tunc looked forward. Shadows were shifting behind the rocks and rubble. They reached long into the center of the clearing, and the orange light of the setting sun behind the shadows made them seem darker.
She pulled Miriel out of the backpack and nudged the Budew awake. Miriel jumped to the ready. She was shaking too, but her mouth was set into a determined grimace. She closed her eyes and concentrated. A yellow powder burst out of the sprouts on top of the Budew’s head and fell to the ground.
“Stun Spore,” said Phoebe. “If the shadows step up and threaten us, use that. Tunc, Orion, prepare to attack.”
Miriel smiled confidently. “Tunc, you help Phoebe find a good place for the tear,” she said.
The Sandshrew nodded and tugged on Phoebe’s pants leg. Then looked back at the other two Pokemon. Orion had shifted into a battle position next to Miriel, but he still looked nervous when he nodded to Tunc. They were really serious about the promise to step up more after the first time they saw the Krampus. They had both battled there, while Tunc was digging, and he was going to dig again.
Phoebe knelt down, one of her hands hovered over the Pokeballs on her belt. Tunc pulled on her pants leg. “Come on,” he called. He waved his arms at the bag, then the messenger who didn’t seem too bothered by the events. The messengers each had a powerful legendary Pokemon that they had raised since it hatched and had other traits that made the great Cresselia pick them.
Tunc scratched at the soil. Phoebe nodded.
“Alright,” she said. “What do I do with the tear?”
