Orion’s eyes widened as the shadows rose and rushed around him and the others. The snarling was bad enough, but there was something wrong with the darkness. Shadows weren’t supposed to block out light. They couldn’t exist without light.

“Miriel!” he shouted. “Tunc! Phoebe!”

The snarls were getting louder and were being joined in by echoing roars.

Miriel called back. “Ori-”

The roaring had drowned out whatever else she had said. Orion covered his ears and slowly walked to where he last saw the Budew.

Miriel was shaking. The rush of winds were knocking her around. She hated being so small and clumsy.

“Orion, come quick!” she shouted. At least, she was sure that she attempted to shout that. It felt like the wind had yanked the words out of her mouth. She couldn’t even hear herself.

She lifted up a foot to move towards where she last saw Orion. The wind felt even stronger, and she felt like in that moment the wind would almost definitely knock her over and send her rolling away from her teammates and trainer, maybe even the rest of the group exploring the wastelands. She put her foot down and shuffled forward bit by bit. She had to stop frequently when she felt like she was shaking too much.

She was leaning forward and advancing when she bumped into something with short, thick fur. She stumbled back. For a moment was afraid that she’d get blown away, but some long arms wrapped around her and pulled her closer. She felt familiar fur pressed against her face, and one of her plants had bumped into a small, cool gem.

Miriel let out a sigh of relief and began babbling thanks to Orion. She couldn’t hear herself and really wasn’t paying attention to what she was saying. For all she knew, Orion could have been saying something similar or nothing at all.

Miriel sighed. She hoped Phoebe and Tunc were alright.

When the shadows began their attack, Tunc immediately began digging. Dig the hole, plant the tear, and he and Phoebe could assist Orion, Miriel, and the others at full force. As the roar of the wind intensified, Tunc looked up.

Everything was almost completely dark. It was as if he was in a tunnel, but without the comfort of warm earth around him. Just the dead wasteland earth under his feet.

He felt something fly by his back armor. He thought he heard a thud over the sound of the wind. He needed to work faster. He was pretty sure the hole was too shallow to successfully plant. The Sandshrew returned to the hole, but instead of finding the dirt beneath, his claws dug into something tough.

Tunc gasped. That was Phoebe’s boot. It didn’t give as much as the empty ones he, Orion, and Opal would play with when they were just hatched, so Phoebe had to still be wearing it. He began tending to his trainer as best he could. He bumped his nose and front paws into Phoebe’s legs as he began to move around her. The first few times she pulled away a little. It was still fairly dark, so Tunc assumed Phoebe hadn’t figured out it was him poking at her but understood that it wasn’t a threat. He moved a bit faster. There was no way Phoebe could forget what being prodded by Sandshrews felt like unless something was wrong. He bumped his nose against Phoebe’s stomach and patted it reassuringly, when he heard a faint sob coming from Phoebe.

The winds had died down and the shadows had left. He looked around. Several trainers and Pokemon were looking around. The only ones he recognized were Orion and Miriel; Orion was holding Miriel and running towards them. They looked fine, so he turned back to Phoebe.

Her clothes were rumpled. Her bag was open, and Pokeballs, treats, and pencils were strewn across the ground. One of her feet was sticking out at an odd angle. Phoebe was shaking and staring at her hands.

“No,” she said. “We failed.”

The three Pokemon looked at their trainer and began knudging their trainer.

Phoebe sat up and began stuffing things back into her bag. “We’re supposed to rebuild this world,” she sobbed. “I lost it.”

“Maybe we can find the shadows,” said Miriel. “We can send out some of the others to ask the other trainers and Pokemon if they saw anything.”

Tunc had gone around to gather the other items. He was sniffing the Pokeballs to figure out who was where. Orion had fetched some of the closer ones before curling up on Phoebe’s lap.

“She’s right,” added Orion. “Once we get all the team together, we’ll do this.”

Tunc placed the remaining Pokeballs on top of the bag. “We’re all here and safe. We can help.”

“No, you did the best you could,” said Phoebe. She sobbed into her hands.

The three Pokemon sat there quietly.
