Elian held the book closely to herself and gazed at the three trainers expectantly. They looked at the Pokemon around them to try to think of something. Kennar Sage’s eyes settled on his Primal Hoothoot. He wasn’t proud of the story of how he caught Clair, but perhaps the old woman would find it satisfying.

Kennar cleared his throat. “Primal Pokemon have been returning to the Realms,” he said.

“I noticed,” said Elian. She smirked at Kennar.

“Only the smallest ones are close in size to a normal Pokemon of the species,” said Kennar. “Clair here ended up hatching a bit larger than average. What really makes them distinct from alchemized and deviant Pokemon are the glowing marks.”

He gestured towards Clair. Glowing markings resembling the arms of a clock were on her antennae. Her glowing blue eyes were surrounded by other bits of glowing light. Finally, her stomach was decorated with a simplified clock face and a clock arm.

Elian gazed at Kennar expectantly.

“I study Pokemon attacks, so when I heard that there was a tower of clockwork Pokemon who could learn moves not normally learned by other Pokemon of the species, I decided to investigate. I brought with me my other two Pokemon, Larry,” Kennar paused to gesture to the Prinplup standing proudly behind him. “And Ray.” This time Kennar pointed to a Pichu on his shoulder covered in shiny, golden fur.

“Larry is my primary battler, and I like keeping Ray on my shoulder for company, so I had them both out when I reached the top of the tower,” said Kennar. “I didn’t know what to expect, and neither did the other trainers in the group. We were ambushed by Primal Hoothoot and Noctowl. I ducked, and Ray fell off my shoulder. A Hoothoot attacked him.”

Kennar sighed, picked up Ray, and stroked the Pichu. “I spend so much time studying moves, but I never got around to teaching new ones to my Pokemon. Ray tried to protect himself with a Thundershock, but the Hoothoot was too strong, and deflected most of the attack, then it knocked out Ray with an Air Slash. I panicked and ran to grab him, but I ended up putting myself in danger.”

“Larry was just a Piplup at the time, but he jumped in to protect us. He evolved and defeated the Hoothoot. There were some primal Hoothoot eggs in the tower that trainers were taking. I grabbed one too and hatched it, and that’s how I got Clair.”

Kennar began nervously fussing over Ray as soon as his story finished.

Elian nodded slowly. “Is that what you wanted?” she asked.

“No!” Kennar replied. “I don’t regret having Clair, or that Larry evolved, but Ray was hurt badly. If Larry and I hadn’t reacted fast enough, he could have been eaten. It hurts the team, because most of the time Ray sees Clair, he’s reminded of the other Hoothoot.”

“I see,” said Elian. “It’s fortunate that tragedy didn’t befall you. Although you still have much to learn, I entrust you with this book.” Elian handed the tome to Kennar who gently took it.

“Thank you,” he said. “I’ll make sure Queen Lucretia and Suicune get this.”
