Clair perched on a tree branch, satisfied with her own training, and watched Kennar work with Pack. The three of them were a short distance from the fighting, but Clair felt proud that she was left to guard without help from Larry. The thought of her new responsibilities made her want to try and learn more new moves.

A shout brought the Primal Hoothoot out of her thoughts. Clair swiveled her head to see Violette running towards them.

The Pancham’s fur was a bit ruffled, but other than that, she looked alright. As Violette got closer, Clair was able to read Violette’s expression. Her eyes were wide and her eyebrows were knitted together. Her mouth was set into a firm line, and she seemed to be grinding the leaf she kept in her mouth with her teeth.

Violette slid to a stop between Clair and Pack.

“Arthur is fighting a Primal Pokemon,” said Violette. “It looked like he was hitting it pretty hard, but it was hitting him just as hard. It was a bird, so I can’t help him too much. We need to go to him and make sure he’s safe.”

Clair nodded in understanding and turned to Kennar to prepare a translation. Although, Kennar’s wide eyes and the way that he tugged on his cloak made it seem like he understood enough. Next to him, Pack’s eyes were wide, and she had one paw to her mouth, then shook her head to return to her usual bored and disdainful facial expression.

Kennar called Pack back into her PokeBall and gestured for Violette to lead the way. Violette nodded and began running. Kennar followed her, while Clair flew above the two of them. They reached a clearing in a forest with a fallen tree.

“No!” shouted Violette. She rushed forward.

Arthur was laying off to the side of the clearing. He was on his side and his eyes were closed. Clair could see Arthur’s chest moving up and down. There were dark marks on his side and face from where he’d been hit with attacks. Violette gently cradled him.

“Arthur,” she said. “I should have taken you with me.”

“Yes, you should have,” said a strange voice.

They’d been too distracted by Arthur to look for his opponent. A crimson bird with ruffled plumage was hovering above them. Gold light shined in lines along its face, body, and wings. Rows of golden scales covered its stomach, and a pair of slightly wavy horns sprouted just above its beak.
Clair flew in between him and the others.

“I’m surprised it took this long for the beasts of purity to offend my mistress,” continued the Primal Swellow. “Some of their champions are willing to hide behind children.”

“You’ll pay for this!” screamed Violette. Kennar had called Arthur back into his PokeBall, leaving Violette’s arms free. She ran forward with a set of claws extended, but Kennar tackled her to the ground.

“Clair, I need you to finish this fight,” he said as he tried to wrestle with the furious Pancham. “Use Ancient Power.”

Clair beamed. She recognized the sounds from what he called the attack she learned earlier.

“Child, you have one chance to leave them,” said the Primal Swellow. He looked down at Violette and Kennar with disgust. “None of you know what you’re really doing.”

Clair shook her head and concentrated on the rocks in her surroundings as she repositioned to be in between her opponent and her friends. The markings on her body glowed brighter and a similar glow surrounded the rocks that flew from the ground.

The Primal Swellow let out an annoyed shriek and rushed forward. Clair launched her Ancient Power attack into the bird’s path.
