"It was a dark and stormy night, and a Prinplup knocked nonstop on door of the legendary Guild Registrar," whispered a Houndour. She leaned close to her partner's ear as she said and was illuminated by the blue lights of her Will-o-Wisp. "His partner froze her paws off and he wouldn't stop knocking. Little did they know that the Guild Registrar was really-"
"Knock it off Nella and go check the windows," snapped a drenched Prinplup. "He is not forgetting our appointment."
"He's probably at home, out of the rain, where we should be."
"He's not forgetting our appointment, I want to get this finished now, especially since we're on a row. Two missions without serious injury."
"Poppins, I know Winston said you were 'smarter than you look'. I think the Ghost that kicked him out did something to his glasses."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
At that moment, the door swung open.
"It seems the lass's charming impromptu horror story about me won't continue," said a shaggy gray Ninetales. "Come in. My name is Callahan, the highly talented Guild Registrar."
"I hope you are, because you're certainly bad at answering the door," replied Poppins. He flicked extra water off his chest. "Wait, Nel's story? Were you eavesdropping on us? Why weren't you answering the door? Nel, how'd you miss him moving you have insane hearing?"
Nella shook her short dark fur out. "I don't know. All I could hear was this obnoxious, non-stop knocking."
"Which is why I didn't open right away," replied Callahan. His eyes shifted to the two sopping Pokémon. "Oh, I'll take those for you so you can dry off."
Poppins and Nella stared at Callahan, who stared back. "How is a bow tie, scarf, and flower being wet that bad? Besides, I'm a Water type, I enjoy the water," asked Poppins. The Ninetales responded by removing the bow tie. Nella draped her scarf over a tail and stepped back, but Callahan swiped her Gracidea Flower and put it with the other items by the fire. Nella moved to sit by the fireplace while Poppins got into a chair.
"Did you really have to take the flower?" asked Nella.
"It was wet and removable," replied Callahan. His smirk widened before he continued. "Now, my favorite part, paperwork, paperwork, paperwork!"
"What's with Fire-types and grinning? The paperwork was a pain, I can't imagine doing it a lot and enjoying it," whispered Poppins.
"He seems capable of doing it," replied Nella.
"There's been some chaos in the Rescuer's Guild, but I do hope you two got and filled out the forms," said Callahan.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, we got it," said Poppins. He slapped the damp forms he had been carrying on Callahan's desk.
"Oh dear it's soaked, you'll have to start from the beginning!" he replied grinning. The paper was wrinkled, but that was it. "I'll write with my tails so things go a little quicker." He waved the nine inky tales.
"It's not that bad!" squawked Poppins. With that the Prinplup began to vigorously rub the forms on his partner's fur.
"Knock that off!" shouted Nella.
"Warm Nella, dry Nella, the inks the same color as your fur so stop whining no one will notice." Poppins examined the forms. The ink on the wet areas had smudged onto Nella's fur, which she began angrily cleaning. "Perhaps a controlled flame would do this faster." He stared at the Houndour, who glared up at him from her messed up fur. "A controlled flame."
"Look to your right," replied Nella.
Poppins turned and held the paper up to the fire to dry it. He stepped closer, accidentally putting his foot on Nella and slipping, dropping the forms near the flame. He jolted to his feet with shook and waved the burning papers wildly. "Nel, Nel, put it out! Put it out! Nella."
"What am I supposed to do, eat it? You're the Water-type."
Poppins summoned a Waterfall and tossed the papers in, this put out the flaming paper. "Ok, now they're illegible." He tossed the paperwork into the fireplace.
"Now that you agree with me, I have spare forms, and we'll have a wonderful evening," said Callahan. "Now, storytime, what are your names and team name?"
"Well, I'm Poppins and this is Nella."
"Two L's in Nella, and two P's in Poppins?"
"Uh, two in the middle and one in the front."
"Alright then." Callahan scribbled on the paper. "Continue."
"Team Jet! As in we're jetting to the top of the Guild." Poppins struck a pose as he said this.
"Very nice, very nice. How about a little of your team's history?"
"Well, Team Jet first started when I decided I was going to leave Snowy Village and become a hero like Chill. I'm sure you heard of him. Minccino, sunglasses, awesome, brave, best of Snowy Village." Poppins paused. "His sister was injured on the last mission he did for the Guild, and he had to stay back."
"It was our first mission for the Guild," added Nella. "Poppins evolved using a scroll he got from the Merchant's Guild, so he could go with. It...well...maybe if Chill had a better team instead of us or we were prepared for Shiv, things wouldn't have gone poorly."
"Nel was actually doing better than me that time. She was getting over a leg wound and an illness and she was fighting really hard. If I'd been better, maybe Shiv wouldn't have...well..."
"I got unfrozen. I've been frozen twice already, relax."
Nella got away from the fireplace and bumped her nose against Poppins shoulder. She would have nuzzled him a little if it wasn't for Callahan staring at them.
Nella stepped away and started talking. "So anyways, we've done two missions since then. First we helped Mike and Sandy evacuate the ranch, then we helped Winston and Maple rescue some baby Pokemon. Like Poppins said, they went well. No major problems. We also helped during the sickness Sorbet brought and went to his party. That was a great way to give back to some of the other Pokemon in the village who helped us out."
"I see," said Callahan. "Was it this Shiv fellow that gave you those scars on your leg?"
"Oh, that. No. A Sneasel we got into a fight with when getting medicine. We were ambushed by three, and one left a parting present before they fled. It's scarred, but not as bad as it used to be. I broke the stitching a few times and it used to make it hurt when I walked. It still hurts a little when I run." Nella laughed nervously.
What followed was a long silence. Callahan decided to break it with a question. "So, Nella, you look like you're from Dusty Woods...so am I. Any favorite memories?"
Nella paused. "Dusty Woods?" she said. She paused, then smiled. "Oh, no, I'm from Mount Fortissmo."
"Are you sure?"
"Of course I'd know my own hatching place, unlike Poppins I know how to walk five feet out of a village without getting lost. Anyways, you wanted team history, not personal history. I met Poppins down by Steel City. He was trying to figure out which way was North and I was on my own after training to improve my Fire-type moves. Apparently in Mossy Village there was this lost Wurmple, and Poppins volunteered to find him, but bit off a bit more than he could chew with some Magnemites. That's when I came in."
"I had it under control, I just wanted them to think they had dealt with me and that kid," said Poppins. He ignored Nella's glare. "Of course, Nel's fire certainly cleaned things up quickly. It's her specialty, she doesn't know any Dark moves, but she does amazing work with fire. Heck, if you give her enough time to set up she can do some hefty damage to even Water types."
"Interesting," muttered Callahan. "A dual type specializing in one of her typings."
"I don't have an interest in Dark type moves," said Nella. "Is there anything else you need? Or can we leave?"
"Ah, yes, you've given me plenty to work with. Take your things and go."
The two Rescuers grabbed their accessories and left the building for the tenements. "Hey, Nel, what was with you back there when he was asking about where you were from?" asked Poppins.
"Oh, I don't know. I think you're little stunt with the paperwork and the talk about Snowy Village threw off my mood," she said. "C'mon, let's go."
Team Jet was in a hurry, but Nella pointed out they should put Walt on the application before they got to work. Originally they intended to leave a note, but were very much surprised to find that Callahan was sitting in his office reading.
"Oh sure," called the fox. "Knock like you're trying to use that wing of yours to break down the door the first time, then just barge in here the second time."
"Weeell, we didn't think you'd be here so we thought we'd just leave you a note about some changes," said Poppins.
"Yes, Rogue Team Jet." Callahan laughed at the Rescuer's shocked expressions. "Oh, I kid, I kid, really, you need to learn to take a joke better, especially you." He pointed at Nella who had recoiled at the remark. "You were the one who insisted on making quite a few wise cracks at your partner's expense. Now, what can I do about your little bug."
"The name's Walt," said the Silcoon. "Technically it's Walter, but only my mom calls me that. I heard about the dragon and wanted to help them out afterwards, but Silcoons don't travel fast and Mom was being stubborn, so it took a while to leave Mossy Village."
"Got that?" said Poppins. "We need to be going soon. We'll stop by later with more info."
Walt hadn't expected to evolve so soon after his arrival, or that Poppins would tell him that since he could move on his own, he was going to see Callahan on his own. Poppins told him how things went when they went the first time. Walt stared at the door. His stubby little arms couldn't knock well, and it seemed like the Ninetales wanted teams to get creative with their entrances. The Beautifly used a weaker version of his Bug Buzz to draw attention to the door.
A window opened and Callahan irritably snapped, "Keep it down out there? Do you want me to come out?" Walt flew over the Ninetales head and landed on a chair in front of the desk.
"Walt from Team Jet, here to give you more info."
"I see," said Callahan. "Well, you've learned some new moves, but I'll get those later, I'm sure you'll demonstrate them on my office like that last one."
"Oh, so you want me to?" Walt rose from his seat and flapped his wings. First he left some yellow powder on the floor, then he whipped up a wind behind him and sent several forms flying. He returned to his seat proudly. "And the other one is Giga Drain. Is that awesome or what?"
"Or what." Callahan grumbled as he picked up some papers. "I didn't want a demonstration. Now, tell me about yourself. What made you want to come to Team Jet's aid."
"I was the Wurmple they rescued when they met. I snuck out of home and went to explore Steel City. I thought sneaking in would be awesome, and Mom would finally acknowledge that I'm responsible."
"That's hardly responsible now, wouldn't you say?"
"I don't know what you're getting at. But anyways, a few days in there was this gang of Magnemites that got mad at me and attacked. Luckily, Poppins and Nella bailed me out. Poppins is really fun, and Nella is the toughest girl I've ever met. I mean, you should see her with fire. It was both creepy and awesome. Too bad she's...lost interest in it...that's the word, but I'm going to boost this team's spirit no matter what!"
"The fire master hates fire moves now? Care to tell why, I'm sure Mike and the others will want to know this."
"Weell, you see, when they went to get medicine they fought some Sneaels, and she kinda really sorta badly burnt the oldest. The oldest went nuts and...well...attacked her brother cuz he didn't wanna help. Poppins thinks that she was all bad, but Nella thinks she made her bad."
"Ah, the dichotomy of good and evil. Where do you fall in this argument?"
"I don't understand?"
"How do you feel about the fire now?"
"I...it's what Nella does. I mean, she used to abuse Will-o-Wisp and use it for everything-Poppins said that, I believe it, I saw her fight with it-it's weird to see her quit, ya know?"
"So, it doesn't matter that she may have maimed someone?"
Walt didn't like the questions. They were too hard. "I gotta go!" He took flight, and allowed Tailwind to guide him to another open window and flew out to the night sky.
Walt sat on Poppins's head. The Beautifly didn't feel like flying, and he was concerned that Poppins might do...something if he wasn't by the Prinplup's side.
Poppins stood there silently.
"So, do you wanna do some battle practice or somethin' after this?" he asked. "Just between you and me, I don't really have flying down and since the one other Beautifly in the entire village is gone, I hafta practice on my own."
"You could always go home," replied Poppins. "Mossy Village is full of bugs. I'm sure someone can help you with flying."
"But I'm not going home, because I'm on the team."
"Walt, how many times do I have to tell you? I don't know if we should be a team. I mess up, Nella get's hurt. With her gone you're probably next, and you're like my brother's age. I can't get you hurt too."
"I won't get hurt. Besides what about representing your hometown?"
"There's a Ninetales, Fleur I think, from Snowy Village. She'll make the village proud."
"And what about you?"
"I don't know!"
"Excuse me, but you gentlemen are horrible at knocking," said Callahan as he opened the door. "Now am I filling out resignation papers or noting the disappearance of that interesting little Houndour girl?"
Poppins and Walt both muttered different answers.
"I'll take that as missing girl, possible resignation and probable quitting of active duty." Callahan closed the door.
"But we're not quitting!" Walt flew towards the door and crashed into it.
"C'mon, Walt. Let's go," mumbled Poppins.
Defeated, Walt flew to his shoulder. It's not supposed to be like this, he thought.
