Part 2: New Bloom"Nel, you sure about what you want to do?" asked Poppins.
"Of course, Spider Web is a lovely move. Safe, won't seriously injure anyone, and without Nasty Plot fire will never leave my control," she replied. The Houndour was wagging her tail, quite pleased with herself. Poppins stared at her incredulously.
"You know that all attack moves can hurt someone. I mean I almost drowned you with Waterfall one time, and I'm not beating myself up over that! Besides, she was a horrible Pokémon, you saw what she did to her brother."
"She did that because of what I did to her! Why couldn't you two have let her attack me, then take her out?"
"I'm not repeating what happened in Snowy Village, not as long as I can fight. End of story. Now let's get to-"
A knock on the door interrupted Poppins. He opened it and looked around. It didn't seem like anyone was there, then he felt something bump into his foot. Poppins shouted and shook off the small Silcoon, who landed on the team's evolution scroll.
"What was that for Poppins?" he asked.
"Who are- wait, is that you Walt? What are you doing here?" shouted Poppins.
"I heard about the dragon, and I decided that I wanted to help my heroes! It took a while to sneak past Mom, but I made it, now what do we need to do as Rescuers?"
"Well, right now the guilds are planting trees."
Walt stared at Poppins. "Laaaaaaame. What about the cool Rescue missions?"
"Those were a while ago. Although, there's a secret project you can help us with. We and another team are trying to figure out how to deal with a dangerous threat in the forest, but this needs to be done quietly. We should probably get going to the meeting place." Poppins offered a wing for Walter to climb onto.
As the three crossed the village square Poppins pointed out landmarks. "That's the most important building in Tao Village, the Rescuer's Tree House. See the ramp? Now Pokémon like Nella can get in too. Plus, I probably would have had an easier time with that when I was a Piplup. My head was a little bigger than my wings." Walt and Poppins looked at Nella expectantly.
"Hey, Nel," whispered Walt. "Where's the part where you make a joke about Poppins?"
She blinked and looked up at the other two. "Oh, I wasn't paying attention. Uh, Poppins, lose some wait, that blubber you keep bragging about isn't useful when you leave your hometown."
"That was kind of weak."
"And why'd you have to bring my blubber into it?" moaned Poppins. He hit his belly a few times with his other wing. "And for the last time, Dad gave it to me."
Nella didn't say anything and began to pick up the pace as they headed towards Tao Woods.
"So we're going into the forest where this threat is to make a plan to beat it? Wow, you guys have gotten so tough!" said Walter.
"She's in the other forest," said Nella. "This is where Team Luxury lives."
"They don't sound like a lame team."
"Because they aren't. We'd prefer working with some of our Rescuer friends, but we've got to spend time with those three instead."
Nella raised a paw and pounded on the door. Team Luxury's new headquarters were designed after a shiny Delcatty, even though no one on the team was shiny and the Skitty who lead it hadn't been allowed to evolve yet.
After a while, a Mankey opened the door and guided them into a comfortable looking sitting room. There was a short table in the center surrounded by cushions. The walls that connected to the hallway and the kitchen were lined with chairs, and couches occupied the other two walls. Walt thought the team had to be extremely social to have a set up like this, although Nella would later tell him that Coco rubbed most Pokémon the wrong way.
The Mankey and Team Jet all selected cushions to sit on. The other two Merchants, a Skitty and a Sneasel, chose to remain curled up on one of the couches. The Skitty's eyes narrowed and her nose scrunched up as she looked at Walt. "Why did you bring someone new here?" she asked.
"He's interested in joining our team, so we're taking him to the meeting," said Poppins.
"Really, is that the best time for bringing in a new member?"
"We have one, why not? Anyways, it's time we got caught up on everything."
"Silver, do you feel like talking?"
"I don't really have a choice," he mumbled. He sat up but kept his arms wrapped tightly around his knees. One of his paws was heavily bandaged. He talked, although his voice was quiet and he seemed to be speaking more to his knees or the floor than the others. "Frost really respected Slasher. When he died, she thought the best thing she can do was continue his work. Several others had the idea, so some began to steal flowers that the village needed to try an' blackmail teams into supportin' 'em. Frost, our kid sister, an' I were doing this when Team Jet came.
"We fought. Sis an I weren't hurt too bad, but Frost dueled Poppins an' Nella. Poppins stabbed her in the knee, an' Nella…I dunno what was happening. She kept breathing fire. It was big an' uncontrollable an' Frost took a direct hit. She lost half her face, an' a lotta fur on her arm an' chest. She was doin' badly. Sis an' I tried everythin' we could, but it looked like she wouldn' come back.
"If the Merchants weren't recruitin' she coulda died and it'd be over." Silver was silent for a while. "I got Rhodes an' Maurice t' help me bring her back an' Remedy was able to save her, but she didn' fully recover 'til she evolved. Before that, Sis an' I were tryin' t' find something in the village fer her t' do, but ev'ry time she said there was more 'portant things, like takin' them out an' avengin' Slasher."
"Avenging Slasher?" asked Coco. "You mean she wanted to kill our Guild Leaders."
"She only let me stay here cuz I said I'd be her spy."
"Coco, if she's after Guild Leaders, we should let them know," said Nella.
"No," said Maurice. "If that's the case PK will throw Silver- if not the rest of our team- out for betraying her like that. There's safety in numbers in the Guilds, plus the Guild Leaders are strong, it'd take more than one Weavile to bring them down."
"And if it becomes more than one Weavile? She wants to start a gang, she'll bring in more Pokémon."
"Our teams are growing too, plus, we can use evolution scrolls," said Maurice.
"About that, Nel is going to spend ours on Spider Web," said Poppins.
"Really? I used mine, but it was to learn useful moves," said Coco. "By the way, since it looks like our teams will be sticking together, I'll need you guys to hang around to help me practice Assist."
"Practice Assist, why?" asked Nella.
"I need to know what a move feels like and the best way for me to use it."
"You're not learning mine, fire is what started this and it's not going to be used to finish it."
"How selfish. I only have one move that I can use with Assist that's ranged."
"Whatever, you'll cope." Nella stood up. "I'm going to work on the planting. I'll find a team to work with and stay in the village."
"I'll meet you tonight by the dojo to help you with my moves. Walt may come to," said Poppins as he left.
The three of them met up with another Rescue Team, Team Tempest, which was made up of a Dewott and Mareep with matching green scarves. Oliver, the Dewott, agreed with Poppins and Nella that Watmel berries were needed to perfect the Rescue tree house.
"Okay, so we all agree that we get these around the base an-" started Poppins.
"They're going to grow into trees. They'll mess up the tree house, again," said Ophelia. "How about we plant them across the river from the headquarters?"
"That sounds even better, we live in the tenements near there."
"Beautiful Watmel berries, here we come!" said Nella. They crossed the moat (Walter was on Nella's back) and began digging holes.Ophelia and Nella were chatting away while they dug holes. Oliver and Poppins were comparing fighting styles while they hauled saplings around. Walt could only move on his own with String Shot, so could do next to nothing.
When Ophelia left to find flowers, Walt moved over to Nella and asked the question he'd been meaning to ask. "Nel," he said. "What was the big deal about you and fire back there? You were amazing with it when you and Poppins helped me. Mum always told me to stay away from fire, but I wasn't a bit scared when you were fighting those Magnemites. So what's the big deal about that Sneasel?"
"It's, well, uh, I'm gonna fix that soon," Nella turned to Ophelia. "Hey, I really like how your team uses matching scarves! Do you think our team should color coordinate our accessories? What color?"
"Oh yeah, those make teams look really unified," said Ophelia. "Oliver and I used a color that was in between my wool and his fur. You should use, ummm, I'll have to think about that a bit."
"Blue for the most important member!" shouted Poppins.
"Really?" asked Nella. "You're doing that in public?"
"Actually, it might work," said Ophelia. She stepped between the two. "It matches Poppins and compliments you. I'd probably match Walt when he evolves."
"I guess that does sound good." Nella sniffed the flowers. "Ooooh, these are great."
"Yeah, we'll make little rings around the saplings."
Walter watched the others continue working. Would change if I evolved, he thought. He crawled onto a rock in a patch of sunlight. Nice and comfortable place to pass the time. He may have dozed off because next thing he knew, Nella was shaking him awake. It was almost dark. Oliver and Ophelia were getting ready to head home.
"Hey Walt, you wanna go with me, Nella, or stay in our place?" said Poppins.
"I'll go with you!" he said. He used String Shot to swing onto Poppins's arm. The two headed over to the dojo while Nella went back to get their scroll.
Coco was standing at a cleared area near the dojo. Targets were hanging from several posts. The Skitty turned around. "So Nella's not coming? Alright, what do you do?" she asked.
"Amazing things. Waterfall, Mist, Metal Claw, and Drill Peck," said Poppins. He flexed his wings.
Coco looked more bored than impressed. "I've done Metal Claw a bit before. And you newbie?"
"Best stuff for a Bug type," said Walt. He tried to imitate Poppins's stance. "Tackle, String Shot, Iron Defense, and Bug Bite."
"Ugh. You two stand back, I'll get to work." Her body glowed white, briefly. Then her tail turned into metal and she cut through a target. She shook her tail out and pranced in place. "Metal Claw always feels so weird. Now, again." This time she shot several Poison Stings out of her mouth. Poppins had to shield himself with his own Metal Claw to avoid getting damaged.
Practice was rather slow. Of Walter and Poppins's moves, Coco was only familiar with Metal Claw, and was only able to get Tackle right on the first try. Some of her failures did make for good dodging practice for the other two, especially when she tried to use Waterfall.
"Alright, I'm calling it a night after this," said Coco. She panted as she readied her final Assist. She glowed, then water erupted straight out of the ground below her, sending her flying.
"I told you, you have to move with the water, and aim it!" shouted Poppins. The water froze. "Coco, did you-"
"So they really are workin' with the enemy," said a young Sneasel as she landed on the ice. She had an unusually loud and high-pitched voice and wore a yellow scarf around her neck.
"Ice," growled Coco. "Why are you doing this?"
"Why'd ya betray Bro?"
"Why don't you come with me and ask him that? It'd be such a pity if your sister did the same thing to you that she did to your brother," Coco purred Charmingly. "You're pretty talented for someone your age. Silver talks about what a great battler you are all the time, and he really likes your sewing projects. You could probably be a master Rogue or tailor if you stay out of trouble."
Ice looked confused, then shook her head and extended her claws. "Sis told me you'd lie! Yer the trouble!" She ran towards Coco, only for Poppins to get in the way and catch her claws with Metal Claw.
"Kid, c'mon, I'm sorry about your sister but you can't be pulling something like this," grunted Poppins.
"No ya aint!" She pushed harder.
"Quit it, Ice! Your brother is worried about you, and I'd hate to be the one to tell him that you chose Frost over him," pleaded Coco. The Charm helped and Poppins was able to push her back. "Careful, if you hurt her we may have some Rogues after us."
"Wait, so we're fighting this super enemy's soldier and we have to pull punches because she works in the same village?" asked Walt.
"That, and she's Silver's brat sister. What are you doing that for?"
Poppins looked away from the Mist he was setting up. "You said careful, I'm making us hard to hit."
"That's not going to do much against her- ugh." Coco was cut off. It sounded like she fell to the ground after getting hit.
"She's in the Mist. Walt get-uhhh."
"Poppins? Crazy cat lady?" called Walt.
"I'm gonna bring 'im to Sis soon," said Ice. "I got no problem with ya, so go on little buggy."
"No!" Walt launched several String Shots forward. Ice began to claw them off, which left her distracted enough for Walt to swing forward with a Tackle and Bug Bite combo. She fell to the ground.
Ice raised a claw. "Don't make me!"
"Go ahead and try!" Walt prepared for another Bug Bite, but the Aerial Ace caught him in the side. Pain shot through out his body and his vision began to fog up. Ice had moved over to Poppins, who was slowly getting up, and began pummeling him with her Faint Attack to knock him out. No, he wasn't going to let that happen, never.
He felt a glow and new strength in his body. The pain in his side was vanishing and repairing itself. He felt stronger. He felt tougher. He felt filled with possibilities. His cocoon broke to reveal massive wings, antennae, and a long nose. He felt so many possibilities and moves.
He picked the strongest one that came to mind. He began vibrating his wings and screaming to activate his Bug Buzz. At first the Sneasel didn't react, then she clamped her claws over ears and shook. Slowly, she backed away. Coco and Poppins got up in the mean time.
"Idiot," said Coco smacking him on the back of the head. "Why didn't you capture her so she can talk to Silver?"
"Uuuhh, well, I…"
"Whatever, I'm calling it a night. See you later." Coco strutted off.
Nella was back at the tenements when Poppins and Walt came home. The room was a mess, and Nella was digging through it frantically. "Come on, I could've sworn it was here! I saw it here, then I turned my back and, poof! You're not getting away from me!"
"Nel, what's going on?" asked Poppins.
"The scroll vanished and…what happened to you two?"
"The younger sister attacked," said Poppins.
"And I'm evolved! Like the wings?" declared Walter. "And you were planning on using it, sorry."
"So that's what happened to the scroll, but what happened during the fight?"
"My pride took the worst damage, but Walt was great. He's definitely on the team."
"Sounds good. We'll party tomorrow before the festival. I'll get some of our friends and find some teams in our Guild with a lot of Bug type members, but first, I think we've earned a rest."
"Yeah, you're right." Poppins crashed onto his bed while used String Shot to make his own place in the corner.
"Then after that, the new Team Jet will be ready for action!" added Walt, before he finally went to sleep.
