Description
The Sewaddle shivered. It had been a while since she had been in the dark office that her Guild Leaders used, and she felt far worse than she had the first time she visited. Leilani squinted and was able to make out a small shadowy form behind the desk and assumed it was the leader she wanted to speak with."M-Mr. Devonshire?" she asked.
The Sableye looked up from what he was reading, then fumbled through his desk. "Ah, you're here," he said. He had taken out a thick envelope and put it on the end of the desk closest to Leilani. "This is quite convenient, I wasn't sure where to send your team's letter given the state of Creeping Forest, but now you're here to pick it up."
"Actually, I would like to talk with you about our last mission, sir. Why did you give us the option of fighting Sorbet? Although you were in Prismatic Jungle when we joined, I'm sure you had enough time to look at our file and see that, as Ice's brother so bluntly put it, our team would be useless there. We would have been safer and more effective working on the evacuation an-"
Devonshire's body shivered and collapsed into a mass of swirling shadows. "Why are you making your team's injuries sound like they're my fault? I'm your Guild Leader, not your nanny. For the village overall, the only long lasting drawback caused by you three going in to battle is that a young Sneasel is almost completely deaf."
"Sir, we're more than pawns, this is a serious matter."
"I understand that, however, the survival of as many Pokémon as possible was the priority. All the casualties are unfortunate. I suggest you focus on the fact that your teammates are alive and toughen up. As the other night proved, being a Rogue isn't for the faint of heart. If you can't learn how to grow stronger, than I suggest you leave."
"But sir, someone needs to look out for those two."
"Your teammates will receive some financial compensation from me for the injuries they gained while working. If you want to keep this from happening again, I suggest you do a better job of looking after them on missions. Good day." Devonshire crossed the room and opened the door. It was obvious that Leilani was no longer wanted. The Sewaddle sighed and scurried out.
Leilani sat in the shade and sighed. Should she open the letter or find a way to dispose of it? Sly was indisposed because of his rib injury, Ice had to adjust to life with little hearing, and Leilani had to return home in a few days to attend the Elder Shroom's funeral, besides after this, the bug wasn't sure if she wanted to be a Rogue anymore. She heard shouting and slid the envelope into her leaves.
"Lei! Lei! Lei! I gotcha a gift!" shouted Ice. The little Sneasel's eyes were bright as she held out a small box. The day after the battle, Ice had been quiet, withdrawn, and thoughtful. After that, she had reverted to her usual self, only louder. "See, look!" she continued. Ice tore off the packaging and a large chunk of the top of the box. Leilani caught a brief glimpse of a clover before she felt the new accessory being stuck to her head.
"Ah, thank you, Ice, although I'd actually like to see it first," she replied.
"Kay!"
The Sewaddle was lifted up in the air and carried off to the fountain. Leilani took a look at the Emerald Accent perched on her forehead. "Thank you."
The two sat at the fountain for a while. The water trickled calmly and made a lovely white noise for the two. Leilani smiled and snuggled into her teammate's shoulder. She wished they could have more moments like this.
"Hey, Lei?" asked Ice. "Have ya thought about what we should do next?"
"I…I haven't," she replied. "Have you ever thought about trying to work outside of the Rogue's Guild?"
"Why? Our Guild's the best! We got Cap'n Gunpowder an' that white scarf guy an' all sortsa other cool Pokémon!"
"What about Devonshire? He let us go out there, and you're deaf in one ear because of it?"
Ice sat there and stared at the sculpture before staring at the sky. "It was my idea," she said softly. "I didn't listen to you or my brother when ya said we couldn' do it." She looked down and pulled her legs closer. "I gotta get stronger an' smarter."
"Ice…"
"I have to. I…what if somethin' worse happens? I gotta protect you an' sis an' bro an' Sly, I gotta do things right this time." Ice stood up. "Is there anything for us to do?"
"Training, I suppose. Search for more experienced Pokémon in our guild and others. Learn strategy."
"Kay, so I get someone to teach fightin' an' you an' Sly look for someone for strategies."
"All three of us should do that. You're the strongest, and there will likely be moments where you'll be alone in a tough spot, and you need to be able to find the quickest way to win."
"Alright," groaned Ice. "Let's go to the castle and look around." She was about to get up when Leilani stopped her.
"No," she sighed. "Let sit and enjoy. We need to relax, but after that, it's time to train."
Ice leaned back and dipped her claw in the fountain as the she slowly drifted asleep. Leilani didn't fall asleep though. She couldn't help but wander what she would do next.
