At first, she paid them no mind. They were just there. In her yard, taking advantage of the bird feeder. By her window, seemingly admiring the wind chime that hung there. There were only a few at first. Only four or five. She didn't mind them. They didn't bother her. They were just, quiet birds who liked to stick around. As the weeks progressed though, their presence began to unnerve her. She hadn't noticed it. As time went on, their numbers began to gradually increase. By the time she realized how big the flock had grown, it was to late for her to start scaring them off. She didn't notice their numbers, until she stepped out one morning to find her car covered in them.

They just sat there, staring at her through their beady black eyes. She had tried to move them. Tried to scare them off by activating her car alarm. Not one of them did so much as flinch. They just continued to sit and watch her. As if, studying her reaction. After that, she'd tried to shoo them away. She swung at them with her purse. They moved, but only to get out of the way. After every attack she made, they simply returned to sit calmly atop her car. By then she'd been more angry then afraid. Intent on ridding her vehicle of the flying black creatures, she retrieved the hose. With a quick turn of a nozzle, began to spray the birds down with frigid water.

That seemed to be what she needed to do. A handful of them wound up drenched, and the others took that as warning to flee. She'd been able to get into her car and drive to work after that. The rest of the day was fine, until she returned home. Upon her arrival, she found that their numbers had double. The entire roof of her house was just, covered with them. Not one pale red shingle was visible past the black mass that was the flock of birds. She'd been hesitant to step closer to her house at that point, but she swallowed her anxiety to make her way inside. Just like before, none of the birds moved. They just sat there atop her house, and watched her as she moved.

That was when she decided that something needed to be done about them. She hunted down a phone book to find the number of the local exterminator. Upon finding it, she quickly dialed the number and proceeded to explain her situation. To her dismay, she was informed that the company didn't deal with crows. Instead, she was advised to set a trap and kill one. She was told that if she killed just one member of the flock in front of the others, they'd flee and never return. Crows are smart birds. They don't return to locations where their kin have been slain. When asked the best method, she was told to set up a rabbit trap. Just lie out food to lure them towards the traps, and when one was caught, go out with a shovel and do what had to be done.

After buying the miniature bear trap looking objects, she did just that. Late in the night when she was sure the birds would be asleep, she went into her back yard and set them up. Three in total, all a good distance apart to ensure at least one would catch its prey. With them set, she scattered leftover food atop them. Pasta, hot dogs, bread. Pretty much anything she thought the animals might be interested in. If not the food itself, then the bugs it would attract would definitely get their attention. With her task done, she went back inside to rest. With luck, she'd wake to the sounds of caught birds calling out to their companions for aid.

That was indeed what happened. The pained screech of one trapped crow woke her with a start, and after shaking off the initial surprise of her waking she rushed outside. Sure enough, one of the traps had a bird by its leg. She didn't need to check to know that the limb had been broken. Given what the traps were used for, the hollow bone of a birds leg would have been easy to crush. Eager to get the crows out of her life forever, she rushed to her shed to retrieve a shovel. She only had one, but it was the perfect one for such an event. The head of the shovel had a flat edge, like a square. The ideal shape for what she planned on doing.

Before the trapped creature had a chance to free itself, she rushed back to it and gazed around her yard. All around her the flock of crows sat screeching. The noise unnerved her, but she knew what she had to do. Intent on getting the creatures out of her life, she held the handle of the shovel in both hands and lifted it into the air. With a single, downward shove, she drove the flat edge of the shovel head into the trapped birds neck. There wasn't any crack, like she'd expected to hear. Just the grinding sound of soil as the shovel was pushed into it. With that, the crow was dead, and all of its companions fell silent. Dead silent, and motionless.

That silence stripped her of all thought. She'd expected them to flee at the sight of their dead flock member. Instead, she felt the sensation of scalding hot water on her bare feet. Gasping in pain, she stepped back abruptly and snapped her eyes to the ground. Her eyes widened in shock, the sight before her one that made her blood run cold. The body of the dead crow seemed to have melted. The black tar that its frame became seeped into the surrounding grass, making it shrivel as if it boiling oil had been dumped on top of it. Afraid, she moved her gaze to the flock of crows that sat silently around her. To her dismay, they didn't seem to be ordinary crows anymore.

Sharp teeth seemed to protrude from their beaks, and their once black eyes seemed to have become living orbs of golden fire. Whatever the creatures were that sat before here, they weren't mere crows. Terrified, she turned to run back inside. Only to find that they had blocked any path to her back door. In fact, the beasts blocked any path she could use in hopes of escaping them. She was completely, and utterly surrounded. To afraid to scream, she stood motionless and watched. The creatures looked from her, to the liquefied body of their deceased companion. As she stood there, watching them as they gazed at her, she knew they were passing judgement.

In the deepest, most desperate parts of her mind, she hoped these beings were of a forgiving nature. She prayed to whatever god there was, that they'd leave her in peace. Those silent prayers, went unanswered. All at once, the beasts came to the conclusion of what needed to be done. Every one of the creatures let out an enraged, demon like screech as they launched themselves at her. A scream barely had time to pass her lips, before they were upon her. Fang bearing beaks and sharp talons tore into her flesh. Her eyes were plucked from their sockets and devoured. Her tongue ripped from her open mouth and consumed.

Skin, muscle, and the small bones of her fingers and toes were torn from her body and hungrily devoured by the beings. In a matter of seconds, the damage the swarm of creatures had caused had succeeded in ending her life. After only a few minutes, her body was stripped to the bone, and then some. What little that remained of her was brittle, and easily crumbled to pieces as the beings walked about atop her as if to remove all evidence of what they had done. This went on until she was nothing but a white paste of sorts that had been smeared into the grass. As if to further their punishment, the creatures began to beat the ground with their wings.

The white paste she had become was rubbed into their black feathers, giving it an oily sheen. Once all remnants of her were disposed off, the beasts reverted to their original images, before taking to the skies. The flock dispersed into a dozens of small groups and flew into every direction. In time, the groups would recollect at a new location. If another would suffer the same fate she had, well. That would be up to whoever they next took interest in.

If she hadn't killed the crow, they'd of likely lost interest with her lack of reaction to them. Then they'd of left.
