Description
This dragon was actually created by accident when I was doing the first body idea for "Starlight""This is one of few dragons that people don't mind living around. Not only is it smart, it is generous. It keeps all the invasive species of fish from wiping out the native breeds, and will go so far as to aide fisherman in making a good catch. It may not be the prettiest looking thing you can find in the swamp, but its definitely something you'd be fortunate to meet."
The Paddlemaw is an ostrich sized dragon sporting soft scales, webbed feet, small horns, and a leathery sail built up of thick skin. There is a visible pouch on its chest, which it fills with water before catching fish. Fish are capable of surviving up to a day while being stored in the pouch, as there is enough oxygen in the water for them to "Breathe". In the end, the fish die due to massive trauma brought on by being cramped in a tight space. It is a breed of dragon that thrives in wetland environments, namely around swamps and ponds. The webbing on its feet is used more for keeping it from sinking in the mud than anything else.
This dragon is considered slimy, thanks to the thin layer of algae that tends to grow on its scales. Its wings are modified to act as fins and as front legs, though the dragon is capable of flying up to thirty-five miles without needing to stop and rest. The Paddlemaw spends most of its time simply sitting in the water, allowing the shadow cast by its sail to draw fish nearer to it. It then catches and stores these fish, either giving them to fisherman or consuming them all together. This breed of dragon sports only six teeth, and will likely go on to loose these teeth all together as it continues to evolve. Since the Paddlemaw swallows all food whole and has a jaw strong enough to crush bone, it is capable of eating and defending itself without need of its teeth.
As far as color goes, the Paddlemaw is green and brown, with flashes of pale blue-grey at random points on its body. Thanks to its unpleasant coloration, it has been dubbed as one of the ugliest dragon species that can be found. However, this is a case where you must judge the breed based upon behavior, rather than looks - as it is one of the gentlest known to man.
Calm and generous, the Paddlemaw is known to follow fisherman and observe how their day prolongs. If a person falls out of their vessel, the dragon will approach to ensure that they can give assistance if it is needed. If the fisherman have had a poor catch, the dragon will proceed to give them every fish it has stored in its pouch. This is a breed rarely known to be violent, and is only known to attack if first harmed. Even then, it will only lash out once per assault. So picking a fight with this dragon is not wise, as it will strike a person every time it is attacked. It will also only harm whoever it was to lash out at it in the first place.
This dragon is a water elemental.
While the Paddlemaw lacks any means of turning stored water into a weapon, its pouch is capable of keeping fluids at a specific temperature and completely filtering out any unwanted minerals and materials.
The diet of the Paddlemaw consist mostly of fish, though it is known to consume frogs, snakes, and other small amphibians or reptiles. It has also been seen eating water grass and fruits, but such occurrences are rare.
