Calmly, she stared out the window of her room. Six stories up- high above the cold, hard, unforgiving ground. How she wanted to meet that ground. Yet, there she was, kept inside her room through the use of bulletproof glass. She couldn't escape and end it all, no matter how badly she wanted to. While she was busy staring out her window, a figure clad in a stained hospital gown appeared in her room. He slowly faded into existence, and once he was completely there he slowly moved to stand behind her. He didn't say a word or make any sound, and yet she knew he was there. Slowly, she raised a hand to press it against the glass, and then she lent forward to do the same with her forehead. In response, he put his hand on her shoulder as an act of comfort- she clenched her eyes tight to fight the tears that threatened to fall from them.

"What's wrong Ava?" His calm, yet concerned voice broke the silence as he grasped her shoulder gently, which made her turn around. She leaned heavily against the glass as she faced him, and blinked her eyes repeatedly in an attempt to keep the tears at bay. He remained silent while he waited for her to answer, and he moved his hand to hold her lower arm as he looked at her- his offset eyes intent. After a while, she forced her eyes to remain open so that she could look at him. A few, stray tears rolled down her cheeks as she forced a smile, only to frown again as she tried to keep herself calm.

  "I-I..." She sniffled a bit.
"I just w-want the pain to go away... I w-want to end it all.. My body a-aches all over.. I c-can't sleep, because of nightmares.. Just thinking about food makes me want to-" She paused abruptly as a sudden dry heave wracked her body, which made it apparent that the very thought of food made her body react with attempts as vomiting. In other words, she was sick, and suffering because of it. After a short coughing fit, she forced herself to stand straight so that she could look him in the face once more, then, she collapsed into tears.
"I just want to die!" She wailed as she covered her face with her hands so that she could sob into them- and he stood stiffly in front of her as he watched her bawl. After a moment, he moved to his knees so that he could put his hands on her shoulders- the scars that lined his arms became more apparent as the light of the window hit them. He gripped her shoulders tightly, and pulled her closer to him in hopes of comforting her. In response, she clung to the front of his stained gown, and she proceeded to bawl into his chest. For a long time, he remained still as she sobbed relentlessly. He just held onto her, and let her cling to him while she cried her sorrows into his chest.

Time passed. The sun shifted in the sky. Eventually the sunlight moved to hit both their bodies completely. The light revealed the many scars that littered his body. The thin, pale scar on his neck. The smaller scars of varying sizes and shapes that lined what skin the light was able to hit. The scar on the right side of his face, which ran through his eye. His pale and glazed over, blind eye. The eye so glazed over that it appeared blue to all who looked at it, while his undamaged eye remained a soft shade of purple. His naturally white hair caught the suns golden rays, and took on a blonde tone because of it. He bore the physical markings of someone who knew pain and suffering. While she, the woman who clung to his frame and sobbed into his chest, showed no evidence of physical wounds. Her suffering came from within- from a sickness in her stomach, and bones. He knew her body ached relentlessly with pain. That eating something as small as an M&M would make her vomit for hours. He knew nightmares plagued her every night, and that despite how much effort she put into fighting sleep her body was unable to let her remain away because of how weak it had gotten.

She truly was suffering- and he knew there would never be a cure for the illness that sickened her so. Not one that would let her live, at least. When her sobs finally turned into quiet sniffles and hiccups, he loosened his hold on her and pulled back slightly so that he could look her in the face. Her hair was matted and greasy from lack of care. Her eyes were swollen and puffy from crying, and had bags under them. She was thin, and sickly looking- way to pale for his liking. In more personal terms, she looked like death- her body was in the state where something as small as a cut could end her life. That was probably why the hospital staff had removed any and every object she could possibly use to harm herself- including the I.V's. For the past couple of months, the only time she saw an I.V was when they were hooking her up to it to give her a few days worth of fluids and vitamins. They didn't even bother giving her food anymore, because she'd gotten so bad the sight an smell of it made her heave- to the point of foaming at the mouth, seeing as her stomach had nothing to empty itself of.

He knew she didn't have long to live, just by looking at her. As if sensing the same thing he did, she smiled at him in relief, and she lifted a hand to cup his right cheek. She ran her thumb over the scar on his right eye, which made him close it for a moment on impulse.

"It'll all be over soon?..." She asked quietly, and with a warm smile as a few more tears rose in her eyes. He responded by taking her hand, and touching her cheek for a moment- her smile widened as she nuzzled his hand happily.

"Yes." He said calmly, though one could tell by his expression that it saddened him. He was glad that she'd be without pain, but sad that he'd be without a dear friend. Then, he moved to pick up her frail body so that he could put her in bed.

"No more pain?..." She asked with a smile as he carried her, her body fairly limp in his arms due to how weak it had suddenly become. That was death for you. The body would suddenly go from being able to hold itself up, to being unable to do more than lie on the ground. Then, when the heart stopped pumping and the blood ran cold, the body stiffened once more, and became near immovable.

"Never again." He said with a bit of a smile as he laid her on the bed. Not long after, he moved to lie beside her while she got comfortable. He knew she wouldn't last the night, and so he wanted to be beside her in her final moments. If she had anything to say, he'd hear it. If she had any requests, he'd do them. He just wanted to make sure he last moments were spent has happy as they could possibly be...
-------------------------------------------------------------

Hours had passed. As expected, her body only grew weaker and weaker as time progressed. Her breathing was off. Whenever he moved to listen to her heartbeat, it would go from too fast to too slow and then back again. She could barely move, but seemed completely comfortable in her given position. There was a soft smile on her face, and her eyes, dull as they were, shown nothing but happiness. He'd done well to stay beside her- he could tell his presence made her less afraid of what would inevitably come.

"Hey... My stomach feels better...... I don't feel sick at all... Nothing hurts..." She said slowly, and with long pauses as she smiled at him. That was it. He knew she was at the end of her rope. In hopes of making sure she'd pass on without regret, he sat up and looked down at her with a sorrowful expression.

"Is there anything you'd like me to do before you go?..." He asked quietly as he stared at her. In response, she took a shaky breath and smiled at him happily.

"Yes, and no... I want you to promise me.... You'll seek out your own happiness.... Promise..." She said with a sad smile, as a small tear rose to the surface in one of her eyes- but it dared not fall. He honestly didn't know how to respond to her request. As far as he knew, he was happy. He always had friends to look after, always had a means of helping them- so long as they were within the hospital. What could she have meant by?... There was a sudden surge of sadness that made him realize what she meant. She wanted him to find someone who'd stay with him always- someone like him. She was more or less telling him to trust that things would be alright in the hospital, because fear of his punishment would make people obey- if only for a while. She was telling him to find someone who would be more than just a friend- but an eternal companion. A sad frown appeared on his features at the realization of what she meant, and she responded with a saddened look of her own.
"You don't... Have to do... It now........ Just, promise me.... You will..." She said slowly, and tiredly as her heart began to slow- it was so close to stopping. She was so close to death. He simply couldn't bring himself to deny her her last wish.

"I... Promise..." He said hesitantly, as he reached out to take her hand. As he did so, he noticed the tear rolling down her cheek- and so he used his other hand to wipe it away. Her smile softened in response to his agreement, then her eyes began to flutter shut.

"Thank you..." She said quietly, as her eyes finally shut. Her breathing slowed to a near stop, and yet she managed to push two final words past her lips, with her last breath.
  "Goodbye.... Vevo..."
