Description
Behold, the Poltergeist dragon. A species designed in the likeness of"Not all demons are easy to see, my friend. Some of them look as small and harmless as a common dog... That's how they get you. That's how this beast turns some of the most dangerous dragons, into lowly servants."
The Poltergeist is a small breed of dragon, reaching only the size of a bobcat. It sports five horns atop its head, which form a crest. There are bony growths on its lower jaw, and it has four wings, and a tail that supports two stingers. Its ears are surprisingly small, while its eyes are of typical size-to-body ratio. The whole of its body is coated in a thick skin, making it difficult for non-dragon predators to tear. However, its bones are weak compared to that of other dragon species, making it highly susceptible to predation.
This breed of dragon is small and lacks any real means of properly defending itself. Hence, it has developed a means of survival that is both effective and terrifying. The venom contained in its stingers act as a mind control agent. Dragons that are injected with this compound become trapped in a state of paternally driven protection. Infected dragons will not sleep or eat, though they will continue to and drink water. These dragons will inevitably die due to internal organ failure brought on by lack of rest. The Poltergeist will then spend months consuming the corpse of their dead guardian while it waits for a living replacement to come along in search of an easy meal. The toxins found in its venom only effect dragons, and cannot be used on other animals. Hence, it cannot force a human or other creature to protect it.
Stingers and horns aside, this dragon is solid grey in coloration. Horns and stingers are usually either black (female) or red (male). Eyes are predominately brown, with a recessive trait of green. Males tend to have a small group of females at hand to breed with - with a ratio of five females per male. This is due to a low hatch rate among eggs, and that Poltergeists do not develop their venom until becoming an adolescent at 2 years of age. Of the 40 or so eggs that are laid, up to 20 will hatch, and around 5 will reach adulthood if lucky. Hence the importance of their ability to force larger dragon species to defend them. Without this capability, the Poltergeist dragon species would go completely extinct in only a few years. The breed tends to live in mountains or rocky areas.
As far as personality goes, this dragon species shows high levels of cowardice when attacked. It only shows brave behavior when under the cover of its fog, in which case any dragon around is likely to be stung and forced to protect it. Both parents care for the young, though newborn hatchlings tend to bully the smaller siblings. The runt of the litter is most likely to die of this. This breed it not social when it comes to humans, making it impossible to properly train.
This dragon is a water/earth elemental.
The Poltergeist spews a thick, salt laced mist that is used to temporarily dull the senses of any dragon that draws near too it. The same mist is also used to preserve the corpses of dead guardians, ensuring that their will be no chance of sickness. How the dragon manages to produce such massive quantities of salt is currently unknown. It is this water and salt filled vapor that has given the dragon a water and earth classification.
The diet of this dragon consists of deceased guardian dragons, fungus, and vegetation. It is not known to do any form of hunting, but is quite a skilled forager.
