Chapter One: Getting Started
Fidgeting slightly, (Y/N) stood outside the entrance of the carnival. She and the other artists shared the same vigor in terms of getting started in their projects. As it was, things had been set up in a very specific way and people were eager to see their work stations. The forty-eight of them were separated into three groups of sixteen. One group was supposed to work on the outside of the buildings. One was supposed to decorate any of the small stands and attractions located throughout the carnival, and the final group was to paint the interior of any building or area where people would be allowed to enter. Three groups, three specified tasks, all working to get the whole carnival ready for its grand re-opening. They had four months to get everything done, which seemed like too strict a time limit from her perspective. If there were more people, then maybe it wouldn't have seemed to bad.
Painting took a long time, and rushing it make it all the easier for mistakes to be made. As it was, given the time limit it was likely most of those mistakes would go without being fixed. Sure, the people coming in and out of the carnival likely wouldn't notice or care. She would though. That was why she intended on taking careful note of any mistake she spotted- that way she could request permission to come in and fix them whenever the carnival was closed. Given that it was only supposed to be open for a couple weeks at a time, then shut down for a few months before becoming active again, she could guess that she wouldn't be immediately turned down. Especially since she'd make it clear that she was willing to fix these mistakes free of charge. After all, she wanted to see the place perfect. If that meant working on her own time and not being paid for it, that was fine.
Before long, someone arrived to let everyone inside so they could go about doing their work. Once inside, (Y/N) and her group fanned out to pick their work spaces. She was part of the group responsible for painting the interior of the buildings and whatnot. Like the others in her group, she set out on her own to pick a place she'd like to work on. Of all the buildings she stepped into, the only one that genuinely pegged her interest was a place farther in that would most likely act as a place for performers. Given that the town carnival would be immobile, there would be a mix of tents and buildings. In the end it was a means of making the location more desirable. The tents would all be located towards the interior, while the buildings formed a bit of a ring to house them. The design would make the location much more comfortable and fun.
One of the most annoying things with carnivals, fairs, and amusement parks was that they often lacked places to get out of the sun. You usually had to eat out in the open, where you were bothered by flies and birds, and you had to deal with the weather. With an immobile carnival though, that annoyance was inhibited. There were places to get out of the sun, and eat. Performers could do their job inside, where it would be much more comfortable for them as well as their guests. All the fun of a carnival without most of the hassle that came with it. (Y/N) chewed on her lip slightly as she made her way over to the first wall to take the piece of paper that was taped too it. Every building had papers located in them. The papers were there to inform the artists of what was to be done with the interior. That way the artwork and decorations would mate whatever was to be done in the area.
As it was, it turned out the building she'd chosen would be used for a few different things. The place would be divided into sections. One section would be used for serving food, and another as a dining area. The last section was going to be a place for performers. By description, there would be a puppet show. The puppet told jokes and whatnot that became less kid friendly as the day trailed on. Meaning come nightfall, it was very unlikely any children would be allowed in the building. That also more or less implied that there would be one or more other eating areas, just to ensure that there were places available to children 24/7. That being that, she knew that there was going to be one list of instructions waiting for her in every segment. Given that there seemed to be strips of paint lining where they building was separated, she could at least have a visual of every piece of her work space.
Smiling, she approached the farthest section and sought out the paper sporting her list. Her first area would be where all the food stands were going to be located. Going on that, along with the instructions, she knew she was supposed to paint amusing things on the walls. Typically people went with cartoon food, but she figured she might as well get a little creative. She'd paint something pleasing to look at that people wouldn't mind seeing while ordering her food. Maybe put up a fair or farm scene. Painting a corn field and animals and whatnot. She could pain a picture of an elderly woman putting pies out for hungry people to enjoy. Something pleasant but more complex than just french fries cracking a joke. Of course she'd plan everything out first, sketch things out and go from there. She had four months to get her building done. That should be enough time.
Even though it was going to be extremely rushed on her end, anyways. With the idea for the first section of her work space in mind, she put the paper back in its original place and moved to the next spot to see what it would be. As expected, it was going to be the dining area. Given that she wanted the three segments of the building to match as far as ambiance went, she opted to paint things with the same theme as the eatery. If she was going to go with a farm setting, she could easily make the surrounding area look like a park or a creek. Just a place you'd expect to find near a big red barn. She could already picture the trees and birds she wanted to have on the scene. Crows perched in the branches of an oak, staring towards the farmers corn field but afraid to go near because he was out and about. Yes, she was definitely liking the farm setting.
She just had to double check and make sure the performer would blend in well with everything. If he'd seem anything like a cowboy or a hillbilly, or whatnot, she could stick with the theme for that location as well. She returned the paper to its location before venturing to her last segment of the work place to check the list. Sure enough, the name of the performer and a better description of what he did was there. The puppet was a skeleton going by the name “Bony Bill”. According to the description, Bony Bill told a number of jokes and even did skits with the audience. Going on that, she could sense that maybe a farm setting wouldn't be best. Whenever someone thought of talking skeletons, usually they pictured the desert. So, western would work best from her perspective, but that was only if the actual show would work with it.
She'd have to look up “Bony Bill” on Youtube when she made it home. Make sure his jokes wouldn't be majorly out of place in the setting she had in mind. Either way, she wanted something that would fit throughout the whole building. Having to abruptly change scenery was an eyesore, and a pain to plan out. With plans for her work space underway, (Y/N) returned the last paper to its place before exiting the building. Before she could paint, she needed to plan. Before she could do that though, she had to officially claim her work station so no one else would be able to just walk in and take it from her. To do that, she just had to fill her name into a line on a special piece of paper held by the leader of her group. She quickly sought them out, and after confirming which building she'd just been in she signed her name to claim that as her station.
All of the artists were being paid based on how well they did their jobs. Hence, why everyone was more or less working solo- it was an excuse to pay some more than others without getting into trouble. With her station secured, she was free to go home and start planning. First thing she needed to do was watch a few videos of “Bony Bill” to get a feel on how he liked to perform. After that, she could pick a theme for the building and go from there.
