Description
"Behold, the deadliest of the aquatic dragons... Smaller than the humble pony, but long as a small boat, it roams the sea in search of prey... Don't fall for that pretty light on its head. The Sea Lure has taken down more ships than the devious sirens..."The Sea Lure is a short but long breed of dragon that thrives in deep water habitats such as the ocean or th sea. Each of its four legs sports two long, webbed toes and short claws. It's body is "Flat" by comparison to other dragons. It has a wide, triangular jaw lined with sharp teeth. A short dorsal fin runs from the back of the neck to the end of the tail. Harmless as it looks, the dorsal fin contains sharp, venom laced spines. The end of its tail acts much like a dolphins fin while in the water, but while in the sky, it is used to help with direction changes. It's wings are large and act very much like fins, though they are very effective when it comes to going skyward.
It has two short ears that act as sensory organs while in the water. Atop its head are three extension's, each ending with a brightly glowing ball. The shorter two are used to help it see, while the longer one is primarily used to attract prey. As far as color goes, it is dark blue on the bottom, and a deep shade of purple on the top. Given that it is a nocturnal predator, the coloration helps it hide in the dark. The membrane on its wings and tail is a dull green that is nearly invisible in th dark. The color of its glowing lures is dependant on what it eats.
The skin on this dragon is thick, and it secretes a thick mucus that makes this species difficult to latch on to. The dorsal fin is the only area containing toxins, and is best left untouched. The venom is highly potent, and attacks the nervous system, causing brain damage and respatoy failure if left untreated. The best way to counteract the venom is to flush the wound with hot water. The heat neutralizes the venom, significantly reducing th chances of long term damage if treated quickly.
The Sea Lure is a group hunter, living in pods O 5 to 50, depending on how much food is available and whether or not their is chance of the species becoming overpopulated. Females are larger then male's, being almost twice as big. Breeding takes place over a two week period in late August, and eggs are laid three months following mating. Eggs will hatch after 30 days. Females will lay up to 200 eggs, and there is a 30% survival rate of newly matched dragons. Of that thirty percent, around half will make it to adulthood. Male's tend to outnumber females 2 to 1, meaning that there is competition when it comes to breeding.
Females lay their eggs on the ocean floor, and will bury them under six feet of sand to ensure safety. The eggs are hard but porous, making them difficult to distinguish from rocks. The eggs are only slightly darker than the surrounding white sand.
In terms of intelligence, the Sea Lure is only as smart as the average dog. Some are smarter than others, while the majority is easy to trick with decoys. However, if one manages to learn a useful skill, it is sure to teach said skill to every member of its pod. This, it has been deemed as an adaptive species.
The diet of the Sea Lure consists mostly of fish, crustaceans, and kept. However, the species is always eager to attack and sink ships, as they have a taste for humans and the rodents that live aboard their vessels.
The Sea Lure is dubbed a water/light elementary.
