Chapter eight

Neither of the women spoke as they made their ways down the halls. They were both a little too nervous to try and discuss what had just transpired. Sure, the silence was awkward and deafening in ways that couldn't make sense, but neither of them would have been able to speak without stumbling all over their words. That, paired with the presence of two extremely irritated slender beings, was enough to convince them to keep their mouths shut. Offenderman's eyes had yet to fade from sight, and Slenderman moved in a way that suggested he wanted to do to them as he'd done to the medical worker that cut him. In more direct words, Slenderman wanted to smash someone against the nearby walls to vent his frustration. Given that Stacy and (Y/N) were currently the only humans in sight, if he snapped they'd be the ones getting attacked. Naturally, this made the pair rather tense, but they still set out to do their jobs as quickly as possible. The pair had to take separate routes at a certain point, which left (Y/N) in the hall, alone, with the still angry Slenderman. She counted her blessings that he didn't lash out at her on the way back to his room. She couldn't say the same about the nearby walls though. He'd moved to the side while he walked, and to take his frustration out on something, he pressed the edge of his shackles against the paint.

As expected, this resulted in a long line being etched into the wall. From how hard he'd pressed the metal against it, there was a half inch deep indent going through the drywall, and it must have been two inches wide. So, he'd done a fair amount of damage to the wall on the trip back to his room. Truth be told, (Y/N) was relieved that he didn't do anything aside from that. He didn't try to pull out of her grasp, he didn't behave aggressively towards her. He remained still and patient while she unlocked his door to let him in, and after getting into his room she quickly set out to remove all of his restraints. Slenderman remained still and rigid while she freed him of his bindings, but as soon as the shackles were off (Y/N) fell witness to a side of him she'd never witnessed before. A painfully loud, static noise hit her ears. The sound was so intense, she had to sit down and cover her head. Well, in more accurate terms, her legs gave way and he wound up kneeling on the ground while she tried to fight through the intense headache the static caused. Just by emitting a sound, he'd rendered her unable to stand, or even see straight. At that moment, she honestly expected him to pick her up and tear her in half. She expected him to kill her in the fit of anger he was having. What happened instead, came as both a surprise and a relief.

As abruptly as the static started, it ended. When the sound stopped, so did the pounding pain inside her head. For a minute or so, (Y/N) was unsure as to if she wanted to try and get up. She didn't even know if she wanted to open her eyes. She'd closed them in an attempt to block out the pain, and now she had no way of knowing what she'd be looking at if she opened them. For a short while, she remained on her knees and kept her eyes closed. After spending what felt like an eternity like that without anything happening, she hesitantly opened her eyes, only to flinch at what she saw. Slenderman's hand was less than an inch from her face. When she looked up, she nearly poked her eye on his long, stick like fingers. For a moment, (Y/N) didn't know how to react. Given that he hadn't taken the liberty to attack her, and that he stood patiently over her with his hand extended, she eventually got the message and hesitantly reached to grasp his hand. As soon as he felt her hand land in his, he wrapped his fingers around the appendage before he abruptly picked her up. He didn't help her stand- he lifted her by her arm so that he could hold her at eye level. Well, what would have been considered eye level, if he had eyes. For nearly a minute, he held her there like that.

She stared anxiously onto his face as he held his unseen gaze on her. He seemed to study her, or at least that's what it felt like from her perspective. Relief flooded her system when he decided to put her down- she was actually surprised by how gentle he'd actually been. Her arm didn't hurt from being held by it, and when he set her back on her feet she found it odd how carefully he'd set her down. Still, the behavior made it obvious that his intentions hadn't been to harm her. An odd thought considering the sound he'd created had been enough to bring her too her knees. Highly flustered by this point, she tried not to focus too much on what had just transpired. To distract herself, she set out to collect her supplies so that she could get a move on. She finished filling out the few pieces of paper she had left, then set everything in her basket so she could head out. While she went about doing this, Slenderman kept his gaze transfixed on her. Even though he didn't have eyes, or even a face, to look at her with, she still sensed that he was watching her. Once she had all of her belongings at hand, she proceeded to exit the room. In her haste to get away from Slenderman, whose odd behavior had somehow triggered her fight or flight response, she was unable to give him her usual goodbye.

Instead, she gave him a hasty wave as she slipped out the door before it could lock on her. As expected given the beings odd behavior, he stared at her even as she left. That, of course, only managed to bother her more. Normally he didn't move unless instructed, and they only touched at required times. The abrupt change in behavior made her nervous- because she didn't know if it meant he was starting to trust her, or if he was going to try and kill her. Whatever was going through his head, she couldn't tell what it was and that made her very uncomfortable. Once out of his room, she quickly started down the hall in an attempt to get away from him as quickly as possible. Thus far, her day was not going as they usually did. First was the issue with Eyeless Jack, and now Slenderman was behaving strangely. After making it to the break room, (Y/N) sat down for a moment to try and regain her bearings. She needed to compose herself before she went to visit her remaining patients. Then she'd go to lunch and do other things until it came time for her to do her final rounds. Her oddly behaving patients would be under the watch of an alternate guard until then. As it was, there were two types of workers in her specific group. Those who had specific patients to see every day, and those who were randomly assigned patients on a weekly basis.

Those with a permanent set of patients had a set time schedule. She had to be on site by seven in the morning, and was free to leave at five PM. Her set of workers had ten hour shifts. The other workers, had random time schedules which changed on a weekly basis. Sometimes they only had to be on site from eleven in the morning to a little after three, which allowed those with permanent schedules to take breaks and have their lunch. Others were set to be around from five PM to midnight, and then there were those at work from midnight to seven in the morning. Her group was set to be at work for ten solid hours, only taking breaks between eleven and three. The other group was set into three time patterns, consisting of two seven hour schedules and one four hour schedule. Her work group had what was called the "Set time pattern", meaning it never changed. The other work group had what was referred to as the "Fluctuating time pattern", meaning they randomly went between the seven hour and five hour patterns. The odd pattern set ensured that there were people available all hours of the day. Any other observation of the patients was done through a series of motion detectors, heat monitors, and video cameras. All of said mechanical observations were monitored by a completely different class of workers entirely.

Once she managed to calm down somewhat, (Y/N) stood back up and resumed her work activities. She quickly put all of the papers regarding Slenderman into their proper place, before she collected all the forms she'd need for her next set of patients. The last two she had to deal with were a pair of Slenderman's proxies. Like their master, they tended to keep silent whenever she was in the room. They whispered to each other a bit when they believed she wasn't paying attention, but it was extremely rare for either of them to speak with her. Given their track record with caretakers, she wasn't surprised. Like Eyeless Jack, the proxies had had a number of handlers who purposely treated them poorly. At least three of them had gone out of their way to send one of them into a severe panic attack. They'd done so then ensured the other wouldn't be around to calm their partner down. Other things had been done to them, some worse and some bad, but all in all they'd learned not to flat out trust their caretakers. She understood why they refused to speak to her, but given how well she had treated them the past seven years made it bother her a bit. She was as humane with her patients as she could be, given the number of rules she had to follow. The worst she'd done to them was allow them to be taken to the medical ward.

Sadly, it was a requirement for her to allow the medical staff to perform their experiments on them. She had no say in whether or not they were allowed to take a tissue sample, or see how they react when a specific drug is introduced to their bodies. She could not deny the medical workers the right to experiment on her patients. Still, that didn't mean they were free to do whatever they liked. The med staff were required to inform the handlers prior to performing anything related to experimentation. This included collecting tissue samples, drawing blood, or giving them "Medication" of some form. They were free to do as they wished, but only if she knew what they were planning on doing. The reason for that requirement was obviously for sake of making sure the caretakers were able to properly care for their patients after all experiments were over and done with. The higher ups preferred their prisoners remain alive as long as physically possible. Ironic, considering they were completely fine with said prisoners being physically and mentally tortured through medical experimentation. Experiments which either drove the subjects further into insanity or made them more than willing to destroy themselves as a means of avoiding it. Indeed, it was a cruel life the prisoners were forced to live.

She actually became disheartened every now and again when she thought about how her patients had to survive. When she had collected everything she needed, (Y/N) proceeded to leave the break room so that she could go and visit her remaining patients. Considering she was two hours behind her usual schedule, she was slightly worried about them. Not because she was afraid of them being hungry- their room was stocked with a fair amount of food. She was worried because she had no idea if one of them had had a panic attack as result of her being late. For some reason, the meeker of the two seemed to overthink things. Whenever she was late by more than half an hour, the pair became extremely anxious. She didn't know why, but they did. Part of her believed it was because they convinced themselves that they were getting a new caretaker, and that they worried about what would be done to them once said caretaker arrived. This was just a thought though. She couldn't exactly know what bothered them so much if they wouldn't tell her. So, she was left trying to figure out why the pair got so on edge whenever she was gone too long. She was also left to worry that one of them would have a panic attack because of her being too far behind schedule.

The trip to their room took about eight minutes, and as soon as she was there she put in not one, but two codes. The second code unlocked the door so she could get in. The first unlocked a specific cabinet, which held a small assortment of pills that were to be given to one of the two patients in the room. He was on three specific types of medication. One that kept his anxiety levels in check, one to reduce his risk of having a seizure, and one that was to be given to him in the event of a seizure. Two of the pills were taken on a daily basis, and the third was reserved for emergencies. While she always made sure there was at least one of the emergency pills available in the event of a seizure, she tended to unlock the medical cabinet whenever she entered the room. Just in case she needed to get the medicine ASAP. As soon as the door unlocked, she made her way inside and nearly dropped her things when she spotted her patients. They were curled up near a corner, one of them trembling while the other attempted to calm him down. They looked at her as soon as they heard the door close, but she didn't spend any time pondering what to do next. She was two hours late, meaning the sicker of her patients was two hours behind schedule for taking his medication.

She dropped her basket and all that it held, then rushed towards the kitchen so she could get the medicine out of the cabinet she'd unlocked. She quickly grabbed the bottles of pills, and collected a pill from each before putting the bottles back. Once she had the medicine, she retrieved a small glass of water before hastily making her way back to her patients...
