In a realm without description, the long lost beasts of lore come to gather. The gateway between their place of mortality, and the realm in which they become immortal, has slowly began to open. The time for their return has come. They have deemed themselves ready to reenter the realm of man. The separate races - the various offsets of an individual species, father together to create the link needed to open the gateway. All must find their own means of entry. All must work in unison, and hope that they can locate that single, human aide that will grant them access to the realm of man. In clusters, they gather, unifying their mystic skill to seek out whomever it is that will act as their salvation. None know who they seek, but all know the traits in which they must lock on to. Only one of the individual members of any breed will be granted the ability to communicate with the selected mortal. Even so, it is unknown as which of them will be granted that responsibility. All that can be sure is that they must work in unison, and keep the link strong while the contract is established...

At first, she could have sworn that she was dreaming. How could she not? Any sane person would assume that they were either dreaming or hallucinating if they opened their eyes to see such an unnatural creature looming over them. Convinced that she was trapped in a dream while completely aware of the notion, she sat up in what presented itself as her bed. She held no memory of when she had last had a dream so, lucid. Unable to find her voice in this supposed world of slumber, she stared upon the frame of the creature that had locked its eyes on her. There was another reason to believe that this experience was a dream. The thing that stood before her, was in no way natural. When she looked upon it, the first idea that came to mind was that a unicorn had come to visit her in her dreams. That had been the initial thought, even though it did not accurately match her idea of a unicorn.
This beast resembled the one horned horse of legend, but in no way matched it. Despite being unable to speak, she was still capable of moving. She extended a hand to touch the strange creature on impulse, finding that she was in no way negatively effected by the sight of it. She should have been surprised by its willingness to accept her touch. That was not what pegged her interest though. She was well aware of the fact that she had set her hand atop its elongated snout, but she felt nothing. It was as if she had merely put her hand on air. There was no warmth, no chill - no noted difference between touching the strange creature and simply holding her hand in the air. Even so, in the back of her mind, she was convinced that her hand had come into contact with something solid. An unusual sense of calm washed over her when her eyes shifted enough to lock with those of the animal. She could not recall the last time that she had felt so at ease.
As she stared into emerald orbs of the beast, she could not help but feel at ease. She could sense understanding, sympathy, love, and so many other emotions that people had not demonstrated in her presence for what felt like an eternity. Without understanding the reason for their appearance, she came to realize the droplets of moisture that rolled down her cheeks. Just as abruptly as the calm had hit her, it had vanished - leaving her with a sense of agony that could not be soundly explained. The barrier that she had put up years ago to fight back that pain had suddenly been torn down, quickly reducing her to a sobbing, mess of a woman who sat in the fetal position atop her bed. She had no understanding of where the tears came from, but she could recognize the cause of them. The pain had no reason to be there, but she knew it all to well. This was the agony of the injustice that had been done to her.
This was the hell of putting her trust in someone, only for it to be betrayed. This was the anguish of having to live with that betrayal, while being convinced that she was the one to blame for to. To have been told that she had wanted it, or that she had been asking for it - despite the obvious signs that explained otherwise. The blood she had shed, the screams that had erupted from her, the constant pleading for justice. All of the unwanted emotions - the rejected memories that she had worked to bury - had emerged to strike her full force, and without warning. If there was a Hell, then this had to be the form of suffering that people were forced to experience while there. In the midst of this, she somehow managed to sense a comforting touch while being completely incapable of feeling it. It was instinct that drove her to reach out to the offered sympathy, resulting in her clinging to the face of the creative looking unicorn that was the with her.
Despite being sure that she was touching a solid form, she was still unable to truly feel the being that she was clinging to. She scraped her face against the beast's forehead to try and find some warmth, or the sensation of coarse hair brushing against her skin. She felt nothing, and that only managed to add to her suffering. What she needed now was understanding contact. She needed sympathetic words, and soft whispers of acceptance. These were all things that this unusual creature seemed incapable of giving. Or at least, that was how the situation seemed to be. At first, all her mind could collect was an unpleasant tingling sensation. The tingle shifted into a stinging pain for a moment, an then they were there. They were there and crystal clear. She heard the words of understanding.
"You have endured much suffering, haven't you, child?..."
The voice rang loudly in her ears, making it impossible for her to mishear them. Startled, she pulled away from the unusual beast, and stared into its emerald eyes. Despite knowing that she should have viewed it as frightening to see cat-like eyes on such an unusual face, she was in no way bothered by them. She was still able to see the sympathy and understanding that reflected in them. She was able to see the emotion that stood out by comparison to its otherwise stoic face and body posture. Somehow, she was coaxed off of the bed to stand shakily in front of this creature. For reasons unknown, she found herself fixated on its mysterious appearance. This thing bore unusually large ears, and a head resembling that of a horse. An almost reptilian horse face adorned with bat ears, cat eyes, but no apparent mouth. Albeit, if this was a unicorn, then why would it require a mouth? Such beasts were supposed to be immortal, hence, they need not eat or drink.
The horn looked as if it were molded from black silver - it gave off a metallic sheen, while somehow looking like a completely natural extremity. Deep violet hair decorated the upper coat, but only on the front. This creature bore crimson stripes on its rump and hind legs, while the hair that rested between these markings was such an odd shade of purple, that it almost looked pink. A dark grey mane grew along its neck, and the hair along its underbelly was of the same shade and color. Legs thin and elegant supported the heavy looking body, and a long tail resembling that of a bull or a lion flicked from time to time behind its rear. All in all, this unicorn - if that was what it really was - was breathtaking and mysterious. This creature was something completely unique, and she found herself feeling oddly honoured that it - no - that they, had blessed her with their presence. She unknowingly offered a nod at the question that she had heard the creature speak into the depths of her mind, causing them to be in to walk around her.
"I know you, dear one... I know the agony that plagues the frail muscle that beats within the confines of your chest..."
The being murmured telepathically, their eyes and voice hinting at nothing other than absolute truth. As it was, she was so entranced by this that she had failed to notice something important. Their should have been a sound made with every motion of the creature's hoofed legs. There was no such sound.
"A great injustice has been done to you... A man you once called a dear friend, revealed his hideous inner colors, and stole something from you that can never be restored... You turned to those of authority in search of justice, only to be lumped with the blame for such a horrendous thing being done to you... When word of this happenance met ears of those you thought you could rely on, you were abandoned and left to suffer... Am I correct, dear one?"
The creature stated, speaking as if they had been there to observe every painful moment that the woman had been forced to live through. Again, she offered a nod, feeling the tears begin to roll down her cheeks once again. Though she knew that she should not feel ashamed of what had happened to her, but after being put through all that she had, she could not help but feel humiliated. As if sensing this, the being stepped near enough to her to press their nose against her cheek. She had yet to genuinely feel the contact, though somehow, she was still comforted by it.
"You need not feel shame, child... There is no shame in having suffered in such a way... You have not earned such treatment from your fellow people. The shame you must feel should be directed towards them. You should feel ashamed of them for having treated you in such a way. You need scorn and pity that man for his manipulation and his thievery. Look onto those who were supposed to help you, and be ashamed of them for behaving as if your assailant was the victim. Do not feel ashamed of yourself, for you have done nothing to warrant such a self view."
The words were uttered into the innermost parts of her mind, making it impossible for her not to hear them. Again, she found herself clinging to this visible creature that she was unable to feel. In a way, she was holding onto a phantom. She could see them and hear them, but when it came to her sense of touch, there was nothing. As comforting as it was to be given such a strong level of understanding, it was still lacking. She still needed to feel the warmth of this creature, so that she could genuinely accept as a living being. She could hear them breathe, but felt no disturbance in the air. She honestly felt as if all of this was some form of a hallucination brought on by her hectic mind.
"Believe me child, I am no mere spectre... I might not be here as all of what I am, but I am real. As are my brothers and sisters, who now work so feverishly to ensure that I may speak to you."
The being spoke as if capable of reading her thoughts, awakening a sense of fear that she could not understand. She still could not find it within herself to speak. The phrase "What are you" entered her mind, but she was unable to master her voice. Not that it mattered, given that this being seemed to communicate with her through their mind alone.
"I am exactly what you took me for when you laid your eyes upon me... I am a Unicorn, dear child - but I am of another breed. Just as there are many races of people among the human species, the unicorn breed has evolved to hold many unique forms and traits... For example, every breed of unicorn has one thing that they are incapable of doing... The white unicorns of old, were unable to harm virgins... Among my breed - the unicorns of decorative skin - the incapability is lying. I cannot utter a false truth onto your ears or into your mind - though I am free to mislead you by failing to tell you the answer to something you have not specified... Are you capable of understanding this?"
The beautiful bodied unicorn explained proudly, making the woman question whether or not she had fallen into some sort of mental paradox. Unicorns were being of myth, and so, they were incapable of being real. Yet, she only saw truth in the emerald cast eyes of this creature, making it impossible to think of the statement as a lie. The being seemed to laugh at her thoughts - the sound tickled the back of her mind in an unusual way.
"You have an unusual way of coming to terms with all I have told you... Though, I am glad to see that you cannot earnestly view me as a figment of your creative mind. I also find myself enjoying this conversation more than I could have expected, and so it troubles me that I have to pressure you for something that you will likely find unsettling..."
The creature stated, a look of near sadness showing in their emerald eyes. The woman was unable to help but stare at the being intently, fixated on what it was that they planned on saying.
"If you will allow me to explain... All of the creatures of legend that you can find in stories, every one of them existed. But, they did not come from the world you live in. They came to your realm eons ago, seeking to live for all of time without fear of sickness and starvation... But, in doing so, they lost the ability to evolve. That allowed mankind to find their flaws, and take advantage of them... Fearing extinction, they returned to their original home - where my real body now stands - so that they could grow in numbers and become diverse... Some succeeded in this task, while others had been unable to, and stopped existing as consequence... My race, the unicorns, managed to succeed. We are now content with our diversity, and we seek to reenter the human realm while we still have the capability..."
The unicorn stated, falling still so that they could peer into the eyes of the young woman that they had appeared before. She listened intently to every word, fixated on what she was being told. That was when she began to notice something, off, with the unicorn's face. There wasn't a mouth, but, there was still a visible jaw. She could see the jaw shifting as if in an attempt to speak, and a muffled sound began to emanate from their frame. She was unable to understand the cause this.
"The only way to return is for the various species' of our realm to combine their power, and locate a human who is in need of their aid... My particular breed will be known as the Unicorn of Vengeance among your kind, or the Vengeful Unicorn if you prefer another term. We have evolved in a particular way that you seem to be in need of... We exist to punish those for horrendous crimes... Those who have taken from others what cannot be restored. Those who have claimed life, or destroyed an object which is incapable of being replaced... Those who have taken something of deep personal value to the men, women, and children who reside here... I believe that you understand all that I imply..."
The creature stated, a tone of seriousness emitting from their voice. As they spoke, the unusual state of their jaw became more obvious. The woman stared at them in shock as the flesh surrounding their maw slowly stretched and tore, revealing the rows of sharp, serrated teeth that had been hidden from view. The tearing of skin and flesh created a sound similar to that of cloth being ripped apart, adding to the terror that the woman had began to feel. Oddly, she did not fear for her own well being. The fear came from the knowledge of what the exposure of those teeth implied. This creature stated that they existed to punish the wicked - obviously those teeth would be used to distribute that punishment.
"My comrades have come together to ensure that I have been able to speak with you, but they are quickly growing exhausted... We seek to punish those who have done terrible things, and if you would be so gracious as to grant us passage into your world, then I promise to you now that we will start with the man who has brought about all of your suffering. We will punish him with accordance to the will of your heart, so I am sure that you will be satisfied with what is done... What's more, I will become bound to you for all of your lifetime. If someone does you wrong, then I will ensure that they meet a justifiable punishment... I will remain by your side, cherish you, protect you, and serve you, all of my own will. All you need do is utter this prayer - 'I, of my own will and judgement, grant the Unicorns of Vengeance safe passage into my world. I allow Azula, as the mare who engaged me in conversation, to lead her followers into the realm of man, so that they can bring justice into this world'. Say this child, and I will be able to appear before you as I am. My body and my spirit will stand before you, and you will be able to feel the warmth of my body. You will have me by your side to comfort and support you throughout the remainder of your life, and with luck I will remain here and find you again when your spirit returns to this world. Utter my prayer, dear one, and let the words come from deep within your soul."
The Unicorn - Azula as they called themself - spoke excitedly. Their voice shown with a mixture of pride, anger, and longing. The mixture of emotion shown equally in the creature's deep green eyes, hinting at nothing aside from truth. All that she promised would come to be true. The wicked would be punished, the woman would be avenged, as would everyone else who had been forced to suffer needlessly. She felt no reason to prolong what she knew had to be done. The wicked needed to be punished, people needed to be comforted and avenged, all of those who had suffered would be taken care of.
"I, of my own will and judgement... Grant the Unicorns of Vengeance safe passage into my world.... I allow Azula, as the mare who engaged me in conversation, to lead her followers into the realm of man... So that they can bring justice into this world..." She finally managed to locate her voice, and upon doing so, she immediately murmured the prayer that the Unicorn had given to her. As soon as the words passed her lips, an unexpected wave of nausea crashed into her. Expecting to vomit, she fell to her knees, only to find that she had lost the ability to breathe. Oddly, she felt no fear. Only an unusual sense of calm took hold of her, and it remained with her even as her world fell into darkness...
~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~
When she awoke, she found that she felt completely fine. There was no pain, no sorrow - for once, it was as if she had no reason to feel anything but at ease. Awkwardly, she pulled herself to her feet, and approached her window. She pulled the curtain aside, finding herself disappointed when she saw nothing outside. She had expected to see something, anything out of the ordinary. Instead, all was as it ought to have been. Her disappointment lasted only a few moments, wearing off as soon as an unusual sound met her ears. She recognized it as the clippity-clop of hooves atop a wooden floor. On impulse, she turned, and relief flooded her system at what she was. Azula, her Vengeful Unicorn, was there. They stood calmly and proudly in front of her, seeming to be eager to show off the brown stains that had smeared across their face and horn.
"What did you do to him?" She found herself asking, despite having a basic idea as to what had been done to that man. The man who had taken something irreplaceable from her.
"I devoured him, body and soul... I saw in your heart how badly it was that you wanted him to know your suffering... I gave him that suffering, and then I took life from him... Just as he had taken life from you." Azula stated, sounding in no way like they regretted any of what they had done. Calmly, they approached the woman, and shifted to allow her head to rest atop the woman's shoulder.
"That man took many things from you... The unborn that you sought to keep... The love of the man you sought to start a family with... The faith of your loved ones. He had managed to manipulate all into believing that you had purposely killed your fetus, and that you had done so to make yourself more physically appealing to him so that he would bed you... I know, though. There was no truth in any of what he claimed. He had a dark, lying heart. I quite enjoyed sinking my teeth into it, and watching as he struggled to fight past the pain... He could not die while I devoured him. Even now, his soul and flesh live on as they are dissolved inside my body. He continues to suffer even as I speak. I sense that this pleases you?" The Unicorn spoke, seeming to be amused. She ignored the tears that were rolling down her master's cheeks.
"You know it does... He ruined my life. I went to jail for seven years as result of all he had done to me. I was punished for all that he had done to me.. Now, he gets to feel my anguish tenfold..." She stated, her voice shaking as she spoke. She was not upset. If anything, all of this was the proof of her overwhelming joy. Finally, justice had been served. She was incapable of regretting anything, now that she was sure that that had happened...
