The Aeolus program was a crewed spaceflight project organized and operated by the United Nations Aerospace Coalition that succeeded in its goals of sending humans to Jupiter and Saturn. The Jovian phase began in late 2049 and ran until late 2057, composed of four missions focusing on a specific Galilean moon: Callisto first, then Ganymede, Europa, and finally Io. The Cronian phase began in 2059 and ended in 2067, with each of the four missions focusing on a different feature of the Saturnian moon system: Aeolus V was dedicated entirely to Titan; Aeolus VI visited Iapetus and the outer minor moons Phoebe and Hyperion; Aeolus VII studied Rhea, Dione, and Tethys; and Aeolus VIII focused on Enceladus, Mimas, and the inner ring system.
The Aeolus program was a vital precursor to establishing later human presences and infrastructure in the outer solar system, and produced many important technological advancements –most prominently the Valkyrie fusion drive, humankind's first torch-like rocket engine, which opened up the solar system to humanity.
