Description
here's something I've been meaning to do for a while! rain is one of my favorite animations to do - it's quick, easy, and adds a huge amount of atmosphere to a scenery piece.I use aseprite for my animations, but this should hopefully translate pretty well to any animation program. (Graphicsgale is worth checking out if you want a free pixel animation program!Β graphicsgale.com/us/ )

hi! thanks for the tutorial! it's hard finding one, but one thing i'm confused about. do you have to do this for each separate raindrop?

oof. sounds like a lot of work. i'm trying it right now, but it's hard keeping track of each layer of rain. or do you do them all in one layer?

I do them all on one layer, separate from the background layer. It's a little tedious but I wouldn't say it's super time-consuming - it takes me about ten minutes to put the rain effect in one of my pieces iirc.Β

would you ever consider making a quick video? i'm kinda finding it hard to follow. if not, that's fine.

what program are you using? I only use aseprite for animation, so that's the only program I can really give more detailed advice for Β―\_(γ)_/Β― otherwise I guess you just kinda have to keep experimenting until you figure out a method that makes sense to you!

i'm using photoshop cs6. i'm guessing it would be different here.

aaaaah wow
i... never thought about doing this?? and you're right, it's easy and looks so good! since you're a lot less purist than i am w/ transparency (and i know we've talked this and i mean no offense, just a diff way of doing things, and i respect people who can use gradients and transparency in their pixels and still have them look like... well, pixels!) i know it's gonna be a tad bit more work for me to do the colors manually, but i think that might be fun to experiment with, maybe doing some weird colors for alien worlds, or making the rain change in saturation or the like as it falls.
definitely some other applications for this too - i have a personal piece i've been working on for a while of two characters meeting in an underground lake, and there's stalactites in the foreground and background - making an animation of water dripping from them into the pool and in front of the viewer POV and in the background, that'd be awesome.
great tutorial!

tyy! 8D and the nice thing about rain is it moves so fast it's hardly noticeable whether you use transparency or not - I've done some scenes with opaque rain and it doesn't make much of a difference imo.

oh, you're very right, especially with that first one! and with the second one the opacity matches the characters very well. (also I've been meaning to do some stuff in non-square canvas spaces and that reminds me, haha)
Will definitely play around with this next time I do a suitable bg.

You wouldnt happen to have a tutorial on asesprite would you? I bought it a while back but its very confusing and new to me, im not used to a program i can make slides and animate in at the same time Used to doing that all on my own and then having to run it through a basic animating site.

my knowledge of aseprite is pretty piecemeal tbh - I'd recommend checking out some youtube tutorials if you want a good explanation of how it works c: www.youtube.com/results?search⦠there are a few here that deal specifically with animation!
