Description
This past weekend, my family and I decided to take Josh on a day trip to Vancouver BC (Canada) and we visited the Capilano suspension bridge. We were on our way back over the bridge to the gift shop and I decided that I wanted a perspective photo of the bridge. Josh had already started walking over it, so I took the photo with him, thinking I could always edit him out if I needed to. Best thing was that when I looked at the photo, I found that it was much better with him in it than without. I scaled it to grey, boosted the whites and darkened the blacks a bit, and added negative space to enhance the visible area. I'm happy- mostly because Josh likes it.Related content

Interesting. I went and saw the picture you were refering to, and I can see some similarities in face structure. Coolness indeed, though I guess you could see a better picture of me by viewing my devID.

Wonderful image. I actually like the glow on top; I think it adds a certain etheral quality, giving the image a metaphorical duality. Nice composition 'n all.

Hmmm love the photo - and allthough you sed you tried cropping it - a bit of the old hand across the screen makes me think it works when you chop the bridge approx 1/2 way.... Its so precise tho in that too high or too low and it isnt as good your right.
Maybe unboosted whites would take off the glare!
Great in b/w tho.
Joshua looks almost ghost like despite being so dark and focused. but i think that may be due to the slight feeling of etheral glow around him... cool effect anyhow. Also for some reason looks like he's floating - oh how i'd love to fly..... anyhow - tis a great pic! Keep it up!

SqueakingShoeless In reply to ArtlessHmmmm [2005-06-10 16:19:34 +0000 UTC]
Thanks, I tried cropping it, and the thing was that although the image was okay (not great), the size of the focus changed once I resized it, and I just didn't like the new scope. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work quite the same way. However, I'm considering cutting off or editing the bottom to get the handrails out of the picture. That would definitely help a bit.
To be honest, I like the glare. Overexposure at times is horrible, but in black and whites, I feel that it enhances the feeling, especially of walking into the sun. I'll try mellowing it out a little, though I don't think it'll do much as the whiteness makes a good contrast and light-dark balance with the lower part.
Don't you wish we could fly?
I did use the burn tool over most of the photo- that would probably explain the glow you see.

Ah, there we go!!!! i didnt think about it lacking the necessary white at the bottom if you didnt add it.. maybe overexsposure will grow on me. Mayhap not... We'll see

GerbilEater In reply to ??? [2005-06-10 15:55:49 +0000 UTC]
yeah, I agree, the white glare is a bit too much. And I don't really like the straight and square wooden handrails at the bottom of the picture, they seem out of place, probably because of the curve of the bridge and because they interrupt the simplicity of the picture.
Otherwise it's pretty good, I like the curves and how damn long the bridge looks as a result of the perspective. And the fact that the foliage around the bridge is so much darker makes it look really thick and healthy. Looks like a beautiful place. Nice one.

Ooh, I didn't even think about cropping out the handrails at the bottom. I do like that idea, though it'll take some consideration before I decide whether or not to do it. Thank you for the suggestion though- completely escaped my notice.

As do I. I think instead of just cropping it away, I'll try editing it out with a clone stamp or something. We'll see how that works.

I use it quite a lot to remove watermarks and such crap from wallpapers and pictures I download off the internet. I can't stand the damn things. The awesomeness of the stamp tool pwns the watermarks.

SqueakingShoeless In reply to GerbilEater [2005-06-10 16:41:18 +0000 UTC]
Ahh, yeah definitely a useful thing, though that of course proves watermarks almost useless. Too bad on that note, but good for most other things.

GerbilEater In reply to SqueakingShoeless [2005-06-10 17:01:38 +0000 UTC]
well, as it's only for my personal use it doesn't matter. What really bothers me is when the watermark is placed over the subject of the picture, or over an area with a lot of detail.
Damn, I sound like a spoilt brat again.

Geez, Jessi, WELL DONE!!!! This has to be one of your best to date... except for the fact that up near the top of the photo, its too bright.... find a way to fix it? I don't know... but the whole flow of the bottom 2/3s is amazing.

Don't you have class? Not that I should be talking or anything...
I thought about just cutting away the top, but when I did it, the centeredness and lack of blank space at the top was kinda disappointing. I don't know- there's just something that makes it necessary. Thanks for the comment hon.
