Description
This past weekend, my family and I decided to take Josh on a day trip to Vancouver BC (Canada) and we visited the Capilano suspension bridge. We were on our way back over the bridge to the gift shop and I decided that I wanted a perspective photo of the bridge. Josh had already started walking over it, so I took the photo with him, thinking I could always edit him out if I needed to. Best thing was that when I looked at the photo, I found that it was much better with him in it than without. I scaled it to grey, boosted the whites and darkened the blacks a bit, and added negative space to enhance the visible area. I'm happy- mostly because Josh likes it.Related content

Thanks, I'm glad you like it- and double that for the fave. It wasn't supposed to be so dark, per se, but if it works, then hey I'm fine with that.

Caught this on your page! Not sure how I missed your stuff in my watch, but I love this. I'm heading to favorites right now, which means when I come to it chronoligically you'll be featured in my journal call Keystone's Ten.
Anyway, the prespective is awesome. I see alot of complaints about the brightness, but I don't think so. It would have been missing something if you cropped that out. I dunno, kind of a Stairway to Heaven/Jacob's Ladder thing. Which lends really well in my opinion to the contrast levels. I'm glad I caught this. Sometimes I need to venture out more!!!

Well hey, long time no talk! How have you been?
Aww, you're featuring me? Thank you, I'm flattered that you like this photo so much. I agree on the brightness- it wasn't intentional at the time, but the contrast definitely adds a stark quality to the atmosphere that would have been a shame to miss. Thank you again hon. Your comment brightened my day (and it was already pretty bright to begin with)!

I do that with all of my favorites because now that I have refined my criteria instead of just being a fav hound like I used to, I feel I can give some background as to why I chose it as a favorite. Hopefully, it will get me to doing more thorough critiques as I go along...
Your welcome sis! I'll have to stop by your gallery again sometime! Something seems to be wrong with my devwatch. When I get about 300 or so in my box, things start getting scrambled up. And I'm sure that's how I have missed several of my friends posts!
I guess I should comment more huh...

Hehe yeah, I found that out too, after a two month period of "laziness" (ie. I was working like crazy to get through school). What I ended up doing was just deleting all deviations except for one from each deviant. Then, when I had time to comment, I'd go to the deviants' galleries and just choose a few of their most recent pieces to comment/critique and possibly fave. It made things a lot more efficient, even if I didn't get to see every single deviation in my inbox.

SqueakingShoeless In reply to keystone045 [2005-07-04 03:37:00 +0000 UTC]
I actually ended up having to create umbrella groups- I have Photo pros (because almost everyone I watch is a photographer), "Developing," Commenters, Journalers, Admins, etc. With the exception of Admins, they all revolve around the ways in which I interact with each deviant most.

keystone045 In reply to SqueakingShoeless [2005-07-06 01:15:10 +0000 UTC]
Just out of curiosity, how do you chose who to watch?
I have a very bad habit of touching that bad little button too much... In fact, I'm even thinking of moving my stock watches over to another account that I have, because I have so many watches that I slow the script down to almost a crash. (Probably would crash if I wasn't using Firefox!)
My usual criteria, is whether or not I am inspired, whether or not I can help them, whether or not they have a stock account I could use at some point.
And alot also depends on how bad I need to put my featured deviants together. Which due to hopeless work load, I haven't done in almost two months....

SqueakingShoeless In reply to keystone045 [2005-07-06 04:17:33 +0000 UTC]
Oh, I guess I do watch admins for the ways in which I interact with them.
And I don't seem to be watching you, do I? You definitely fit into category three there. Sigh. Bad Jess.

SqueakingShoeless In reply to keystone045 [2005-07-06 04:14:35 +0000 UTC]
I have to refrain from using it too much, I'll admit. I don't watch any stock because my focus as an artist is photography rather than photomanipulation so I don't need it. Besides, a lot of stock photography (no offense to anyone! ) looks very unprofessional to me- it looks like the photographer is just taking snapshots left and right, and I just have neither use for nor interest in it.
Instead, my watches are chosen for 1) the fact that the artist is really looking to better him- or herself and I can help him/her, 2) the fact that I truly enjoy their work to the extent that I just have to see every new thing, or 3) the fact that I honestly like the deviant and watch him/her just so that we can talk (usually in journals) and keep track of one another. Group one is the largest, and is mainly comprised of photographers, though there are a few traditional artists and digital landscape artists thrown in there as well (I'm good at anatomy and lightplay, etc.). Group two is very small- I think it's possible that only =kittynn , =Whippeh , and (up until now) =G0rdy are the only ones in that group. Maybe a few other great photographers that just aren't coming to mind. Group three is comprised of a few writers (=demonlight prominent among them), a few admins, and a few Commenters. Oh, and I also watch all of the friends that I know IRL.
You know, I actually met a few deviants in the forums the other day that prefer IE to Firefox and didn't even want to read the browser comparison charts. I near keeled over dead with shock.

SqueakingShoeless In reply to keystone045 [2005-07-07 06:11:19 +0000 UTC]
Hehe cool. My watch groups are really very simple.
I have the Admins group, in case I ever need to contact them as a whole or simply be able to see them all together at a glance.
Then I have the Commenters, who are deviants who don't seem to be artists intent on improving themselves, but rather people who've come to deviantART to comment on others' work. They are my better commenters and I don't know why I've sectioned them off, but I have; this group is less important than other groups that the deviant might fit into.
After that I have the Developing Artists- almost all photographers whom I watch specifically for the purpose of leaving them constructive critiques, whether or not they critique back, whether or not their work is great.
My real-life friends are in their own group because they're special.
Next is the group that I watch, but rarely ever do anything on deviantART. This group is by itself so that I can look at it and go, "Oh, I really haven't heard from that person in a long time. Let's go check in on him/her and leave a sort of 'miss you/where are you' message."
Then I have the Journalers whose work I'm not as interested in as I am in the things they have to say. They don't always comment well, so they don't fit in the Commenters category, but I like reading their journals and commenting more than any other interaction that I might perform with them.
The Photo Pros are the ones I watch both for the true aesthetic quality of their work, though I almost always critique their stuff too. They differ from the Developing artists in that if I'm out of time to comment, I'll be okay with leaving them til later because they don't need critique as badly as the other group. The three I watch purely for love of their work all belong in this group.
And finally, I have the Writers and Poets. I watch very few of them, but I do watch a few because I truly enjoy their work and keeping track of them. They don't differ much from Journalers, but for the fact that I enjoy their work on basically the same level as their journals.
Welcome to my devWatch list. It's a lengthy explanation, but it's pretty simple in the end.

I just realized that last night I looked at your page and didn't really comment on anything. I was thinking that I *hadn't* looked at your page, but I recognized a bunch of things when I came back this morning, so I guess I must have!
Anyhow, this is a great shot. The white area seems just a bit too white to me, but the composition overall is fantastic and I think the way you deepened the blacks a little adds quite a bit to the picture. Great!

Don't you love it when that happens? It's amusing.
Thanks so much. I actually find that the overexposure is helpful to the starkness of the contrast and the atmosphere of the photo. If it were greyer, or less white, then it wouldn't have quite the same punch. Thank you for the wonderful comment though. I'm glad you liked it.

To be honest, I've grown somewhat attached to the overexposure. There's something about it that enhances the atmosphere of the photo- its stark contrast just really hits the eye and gets the message across more powerfully. It's not often that I overexpose my shots, but I'm rather glad I did on this one.
Thanks again. When Josh saw all the faves on this one, he joked that obviously, he looks best in photos when he's both facing away from the camera and unaware that I'm taking the picture.
