This is my attempt at making a bento box
Bento originated from Japanese culture. Oftentimes, mothers make them for their children and husbands. Bento is basically a compact lunch, and lately some people have turned it into an art. You should look some up- some people make AMAZING ones.
Anyway, I used 2 hard boiled eggs with peppercorns and carrot pieces for the chicks, kiwis shaped like butterflies, and fried hot dogs cut like octopus (known as takowina in Japanese)

So this isn't the exact tutorial I used, but it's close.Β eyecandy.nanakaze.net/?p=459 I used carrot for the beaks, but I didn't boil them like this tutorial says. I also used whole peppercorns for the eyes. The eggs aren't too hard to make, really, and they're pretty fun too

Hi! The egg yolks seem quite huge. The ones i made turned out to be very small. How do you achieve such a big yellow portion? Is it because your eggs are naturally bigger than mine??

Thanks! I think I used 'Jumbo' size eggs, which are easily available here in the US, but perhaps not so easily in other parts of the world. That's probably why the yolk is so huge - it's just part of the American idea of making EVERYTHING bigger, haha.

my hot dogs didn't work so well... they were kind of limp. do you cook them before or after you cut them?

after. cook them in a bit of oil, and the legs should curl up and they get all crispy and yummy

haha, i should, shouldn't i? maybve i'll try another one... it's just that i have no bento box, and japanese food is rather hard to come by where i live. but i might be able to try something still

tupperware/ziploc containers work just as good...& i bet you can find an interesting way to doll up some american food...check out my food collection in my favs...i faved like 100 different awesome bento deviations...or just search bento...to get ideas >^_^<

These were my first chicks too! But I think I only did one practice chick before I made these two- I actually made this for a project for my Japanese class, and I was just experimenting with all of it
