Description This beautiful pattern is not my own, unfortunately - the diagram is found at [link]

I made this with the intent of playing with it, so there are a couple minor changes that I made, like the base of the knight and the addition of washers in the pieces to give them weight. The chessboard is also my own- after trying various origami chessboards that people have diagrammed, I found that I didn't like those as well as just plain woven paper. Besides, by weaving the paper, I was able to wrap it over a stiff board easily to have a relatively smooth, flat playing surface.

Some tips for anyone who wants to make this:
1. Don't be stupid like I was and use hot glue to glue the pieces together I know, I know. But I was 13 when I made this, and when you're that age, hot glue is uber cool and can be used for EVERYTHING.
It really can't.
2. Be careful with foil paper. On the more complicated designs it works really well, like the Rook and the Queen. But take care with the bases especially, because when there aren't too many layers of paper, the foil easily gets crinkled, messy, and unhappy . (And it shows the washers on the sides... no matter how gentle you are with it )

Things used:
Black origami paper, silver foil-backed origami paper, black and silver acrylic paints, washers, scotch tape, hot glue, and paper glue, thick-ish paper (watercolor paper, maybe), and way thick board stuff.

I know I should probably ask the person from the site whom did the instructions, but was is the standard base? I'm stumped haha.

Thanks! Most definitely, you should try it. The patterns aren't so bad really. The knight is the worst, but it's just a bit tricky. And it's worth it to have the finished product.

Thanks! It definitely makes a great gift It is a lot of work, and a lot of repetitive folding (something I don't do very well, haha) but the end result is definitely worth it.

Hahaha, I figure making all the pawns must reaaaly get on your nerves after awhile! xD
But I guess that if you do it with lots of time to spare...

HaHahahaahahaa! I might as well!
I remember my frinds telling me that they thought I was a huge nerd because I got good grades and allways kept my head down during class. They tought I was writing down wha t the teacher said, untill they found out that I was only sketching and folding all day! xD

whoa, can u make a tutorial for this??

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

squeejie In reply to musiclover1933 [2010-03-22 23:25:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not sure I could do any better than the original designer's pattern; the link to that is in my comments, I think. Maybe sometime I could do a video tutorial, but I definitely don't have time for that any time in the near future

My advice is just try to follow the written diagrams... good luck!

Wow, that's so cool~ I've been trying to think of a good gift for my dad this is it (he collects weird, but cool chess sets). And I keep getting stuck on the part with the knight where the mane is supposed be folded... I'm getting so frustrated with the folding that I think I'm doing it wrong, any advice?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

squeejie In reply to Akiso [2009-02-24 06:49:22 +0000 UTC]

O.o I made this a good four years ago, so I can't quite remember how I did it.... but I would say, on step 10, go through and re-crease everything again, and then when you do the actual crimping, try doing it from the underside. you can see the paper a bit better and you can fold the diagonal parts a bit easier from that angle. Other than that.... just try some more

sorry if that wasn't much help.. I remember getting so frustrated with that part too, but I got it eventually, so I'm sure you will too

Thanks, I think I got it now... I mean, its not exact, but it's close enough to the diagram. Now my problem is the snout. Typical.
