Well it's certainly better (usually) than deleting something. Sure, there will be times where they do store it in times where they could have deleted it, but it's their choice. And with start.sh, it can hold only so much. Finally, until a feature for a mass delete option is made, it's generally much easier to store since there's an option for it.

The only use I can think of for storage is if they want to remove their artwork, but a LOT of it at a time. Example: Years ago I made a 400 page or something comic. But it was really embarrassing and bad. I wanted to remove it all, but Deviantart doesn't let you delete many deviations at a time, only one at a time. It does however let you mass store deviations. I did not want to manually delete 400 deviations, that would take all day. So I stored them. Deviantart, why the hell can't people mass delete deviations

Yeah, it pisses me off as well. If people don't want their artwork to be viewable anymore, they should remove it from the site. It really grinds my gears when you see a buttload of those 'storage-thumbnails' on the website. It also makes DeviantArt look bad. And it also really doesn't communicate a strong message about the community behind the website if the site is littered with these 'storage-thumbnails'.
Storage is meant to be a temporary,Β intermediate solution. There is a reason why you can restore deviations from storage. Duh!Β Nowadays most people, once they put something in storage, they'll keep it in storage ... indefinitely. Simply because they abuse this function as a trash bin.
A simple solution to the problem would be on DeviantArt's part, since I gave up on the community correcting itself. Just make it as easy as possible to remove artwork, or, if the problem persists, automatically remove the thumbnails of the artwork in the search results on dA's website and from the groups in which they're featured.Β

This phenomenon has me saving all my favorites to my pc. Its one of the things that saddens me most, a piece I love I may never seen again. You as the artist may think you improved so you want to clean out your profile but we never cared about the supposed quality we loved it as is

Yeah, it fucking annoys me ALOT! People work so hard for my half of the trade and even commissions I PAID and then they decided to stash it in the storage making it UN fucking VIEWABLE! I wish this ugly feature doesn't exist and I want to view. No wonder why I downloaded all my favourite pics on my exteral hard drive. Seriously, I wish people would just stop it!

It's always annoying when that happens. If you post it, better keep it up. If you don't want to look at it again, then at least put it in a gallery you'll never pay much attention to.

Even though I have stored away some stuff, I really never store anything away that I have drawn for other people. I mainly just store stuff that I really don't feel like looking at anymore or I just don't know what to do with it. Though I have plans to redo a lot of the stuff I store away, so that it looks better than the first time.
But what I don't like is seeing and faving something really awesome and it ends up in storage and I just wonder what was wrong with it. I'm not really into people storing away some of their really nice pics, if it's nice keep it.

Someone did that to an image I commisioned from them, now I can't even see it. I mean I own that image two, I payed for it so I should be able to see it whenever I want to

Don't understand the logic myself. If you don't want people to see something you've done, why upload it in the first place? And if you think you can do better now you've practiced a bit, why not wither just upload a new version or - if you really must - replace the old version?
Storing them just seems to be a way of trolling people.

I really get upset when I go to my favorites and see the "deviation in storage" message. What's worse is when I forget to download the pic or the artist doesn't allow downloads for it

I came to DA just knowing that this place is full of freedom and creativity , but now the feature called "Deviation in storage" is ruining its core business. I just wonder what good is it to owner and DA itself. If the owner really don't want to share it why bothering flagged it a secret. And the flagged stuffs still need space on HDD server , which mean recently , there are numerous inactive pics that only be good in its owner's mind. And DA servers are flooded with no-good to public stuff. I have this problem too. Many pics in my fav got flagged , and it keep growing contagiously. I just want the way to stop this feature or auto-delete from fav , I don't want to see no-goodie there.
If there's a vote or petition to turn this thing down , I swear... I'll be one of the "Not Want It !!"

What is the Deviation Storage Tool, and how do I access it? Can I temporarily hide deviations?
The Deviation Storage Tool is part of the gallery management tool set that allows you more control over your gallery. It enables you to decide what should be displayed in your gallery without having to delete or re upload items. You simply put the items you do not want to display in your gallery into "storage". These items will then no longer be displayed on the site, and will not be accessible to anyone but you.
To access the Deviation Storage Tool, you will need to hover over the "Submit" button in the header. Upon hovering over "Submit" a drop down will appear and you'll need to click on "Manage Deviations". Once on this page you can store and unstore your deviations through the 'Public' and 'Storage' options.

I mean, I don't understand how dA can let only users view storage by themselves and not anyone that they can/cannot trust. If it's privacy, I don't mind. But the works that users fave, would not see them any longer. dA should put an option about having access to storage such as allowing either friends or the user itself to access the storage.
