Description
Just a little something I worked up to keep my hand in; a world where Kanem-Bornu (conquered rather than driven out ITTL by the Bulala) did a lot better at subjugating the Sahel, creating a large centralised empire that has its borders nibbled away by the colonial powers but remains sovereign - think Siam writ large. Their success is due in large part to trade with and support from the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, which made an earlier transition to a German nationalist state (albeit it retains a lot of HRE-cruft, including a bastardised semi-democratic elector system and various local monarchs); the current Mai-Sultan of the Kanemreich went to college in Berlin and is busily ordering the electrification of vast railways across the savanna.
This world's rogue states are Britain and Russia, who in this world became trade partners rather than rivals. Britain is the first (and thus far only) stronghold of Unitarism, a political philosophy that forbids regional autonomy and centralises powers in an unicameral legislature that appoints the judiciary and elects the Executive-President. It isn't racist as such but supports paternalism to a degree OTL colonialists would have found revolting - lots of Bantu and Filipinos being made to live in semi-detacheds and read Shakespeare, though practicality means that as OTL they have quite a few native puppet states still floating around. They're still smarting from the brokered peace in 1743 where they lost all their Continental possessions and Ireland was transferred to the HREGN by request of the Pope (who now has a very nice penthouse in Trent after the Rational Revolution saw Italy become a kritarchy).
Russia is big into 'Scientific Realism' these days, which for them evidently means lots of eugenics and population-boosting measures in the hopes of overwhelming their neighbours with demography.
With the HRE (and the Kanemreich) adhering to a policy of perpetual neutrality, the main peacekeepers are the Kingdom and Empire of France, the Poldavian Republic of Mexico, ex-French colonialists Carolingia, the Sublime Porte and the Marathas (for all that they aren't happy with the French nibbling away at the Carnatic). The ex-British colonialists in the Amazon aren't friendly with their mother country, but then they aren't friendly with anyone else either - strings of fortified villages in the jungle, out of which marauding musket-wielding freebooters occasionally emerge to raid the richer Dutch or Chilean provinces. Something will have to be done about them one of these days, but the world has bigger fish to fry.

No, that's Carolingia, a former French colony. The HRE joined in the colonisation of South America (more of a smorgasbord than OTL with the Dutch, English, French, Aragonese, and Danish staking claims) and declared protectorates in East Africa and the Congo, in addition to a long-standing venture in Madagascar.

Probably becomes a superpower when the industrial revolution hit the Kanem Bornu empire

Quite possibly - or at least a stronger regional power than we had in OTL Africa. I can't remember whether I wanted the HRE to have led this world's industrial revolution - the mention of the Mai-Sultan ordering electrified rail from Berlin suggests so.

It seems Germany in any timeline takes interest in nations that have potential to become powerful allies.
