while nightmare moon is a creature of not falsity but subtle manipulation physical illusions .... And alicorn powers but no real established or available following save for what is inherently made up fic to fic
And these designations are more a retraction than a boon as it degrades things into a more trivial popularity party at the expense of their characters and interactions

I actually like both character for what they done and they role in show but I actually don't understand the SUPER HYPE OF CHRYSALIS FANBOYS.
bronies/people like Chrysalis because she beat Celestia, stopped mane6 and thing that she is sexy (clop clop clop)

cool story
1) she beat Celestia
after draining Shining Armor for few days... in normal fight without being on "steroids" she would be instant defeated without begging her army for help. Even Chrysalis was shocked that she somehow beat Celestia. And since Celestia had to use EoH to defeat NMM and banish her in past we can assume that NMM is way stronger then Celestia. So for Chrysalis safety she shouldn't even try fighting or offending Nightmare.
Nightmare Moon = everyone beloved Luna that can also use also black magic and is wearing battle regalia
imagine NMM using lightning bolts, illusion magic to cause fear or changing into mist that can cut everything and dodge Chrysalis attacks. Add to this controlling weather, canterlot voice and animate dead spell
2) she overpowered the Mane 6.
not she but the amount of Changeling soldiers overwhelmed mane6
Chrysalis didn't showed anything beside that she need to suck love to be effective ... ok she used green flames to teleport Twilight to the crystal cavern... Her transformation magic and deceiving would be useless in normal fight now.
give Nightmare Moon big army and she will show how to deal with pesky little ponies without sucking someone else energy
3) she looks sexy (saucy or nsfw aspect)
because holes in her whole body, bug carapace on her back, bug wings, messy greased green mane, makes character suddenly attractive and bronies have erotic fantasies about her (fap/clop to her)
things that makes Chrysalis naughty/good looking are her eyes, floppy cute ears, fur color and her seductive voice (but not her laughing)
NMM = beside the weird helmet everything looks actually good on her.
Black is very seductive and sexy color (ask your girl/woman to wear black dress or even better black delicate lingerie, stockings, elbow gloves and she suddenly looks 400% more sexier), she got seductive voice, original eyes/iris shape, interesting eyeshadow and eyelashes colors. Spectral wavy blue mane with little stars = don't tell me that green messy greased mane is better then this. NMM got also proper villain laugh
for inexplicable reason people see NMM as demonic, creepy, nightmarish creature that will faster kill/eat them then be sexy/attractive or give them pleasure.
but somehow bug-pony hybrid with holes in whole body, weird mane and ability to suck one of your vital energy (so you become mindless zombie) is more attractive and in bronies eyes is like perfect girl/top model/playboy girl
MIND BLOWN = BRONIES LOGIC
wait to the season 3 finale or season 4 when next female villainess will appear and majority of people will forget about NMM&Chrysalis and will ship new evil girl with everything and call her best around.

in terms of powers NMM > Chrysalis (without tons of "food" she couldn't do anything to NMM beside silly transformation)
in terms of design NMM = Chrysalis (both look amazing)
in terms of plan NMM = Chrysalis but with a bit more points for Chrysalis (if studio B/DHX didn't use Nightmare Moon as a first villain and had more time to develop her she could have more developed plan and had more show time like Chrysalis but as pilot villain she had to suffer lack of how time :S)
in terms of evil laugh NMM > Chrysalis (this explains everything: [link] )
ofc Discord beats both mares in terms of plan and power but not in terms of design/look
so let's say it's a tie between both evil girls/mares? no hate and anger etc.... :3
