Background:
The second of Woodbeard's two crewmembers and the first mate aboard the pirate captain's ship, Barney is both the strongman and navigator or the crew. Barney used to be a storehouse worker in a port when he witnessed Woodbeard making off with some possessions of a local pirate captain. Barney, knowing what the ruthless captain would plan on doing to catch the stumpy pirate, ended up saving Woodbeard's life by directing him away from a pirate ambush. Woodbeard, in turn, offered him a job aboard his ship. Barney accepted, knowing that he'd be a dead man once the ruthless pirate found out he had helped Woodbeard.

On board Woodbeard's ship, Barney proved to be the strongest of the three crewmen, easily being able to fight off armed opponents with his bare hands. This comes from Barney's years of experience working in a storehouse that involved heavy lifting. Barney's strength has come in handy countless occasions when Woodbeard required muscle to help recover buried or hidden treasure.

Like all of Woodbeard's crew, Barney gets underestimated at first glance, simply because he doesn't look like a pirate. Barney has been involved in numerous bar fights (which usually started by Grog saying the wrong thing), and he has nearly single-handedly beaten everyone to approach him each time, usually leaving the bar in tatters. Whenever the crew makes a return to a bar previously visited by Barney, the strongman is never overlooked again.

Because Barney is the most-handsome of Woodbeard's crew, he is usually the object of affection for several good-looking women. However, outer beauty is never what interests Barney, as the woman he says he'll end up with should have a good personality. Barney is usually attracted to the women no other man would touch.

Barney serves as the voice of reason on Woodbeard's ship. With Woodbeard's obsession with finding treasure and Grog always being drunk, Barney is considered to be the sanest of the three.

Strengths:
Barney's upper body strength is unmatched by other pirates. He usually fights with his bare hands or by throwing heavy objects at his opponents. Barney is strong enough to punch a hole through a door or bend another pirate's gun with his hands.

Weaknesses:
Barney, because he didn't technically train to be a pirate, is a horrible swimmer. He tries to avoid falling in the water at all costs, because if he does, Barney usually has to rely on Grog to get him out (which usually takes a few tries to do anyway).
