Hmm...Pretty sure Goku can't breath in space as stated in canon. Vegeta pretty much proved it when Frieza blew up earth. So either it was the earth exploding that killed him or it was the lack of air. Either way that's not a very good benchmark for someone with a god in their title.

Goku can breath if there's a planet nearby. He did it in Battle of Gods, and his father did it in the manga.

The first one feels like he's just fighting in the stratosphere. He's even "breathing" heavily that high up after the fight was over. The bardock one just comes off as inconsistant writing. Especially considering it originally wasn't even apart of canon and fell in the same category as filler. I mean it IS the same movie that called Bardock a "brilliant scientist".

The "brilliant scientist" thing is only in the english dubbing. Anyway, there are other situations with saiyans breathing in space, but most of them are fillers so I don't know if you can consider them valid or not.
