Oh noes! I've been reduced to fanart!But the Leviathan series are just that awesome.
Words cannot express how much I love these books--I have read a lot in my fifteen years, and own enough novels to sell for a fortune, but Leviathan is my favorite! Its right up my alley! ^^
SPOILERS:
Alright, don't diss Lilit! She's awesome. I think readers who are too touchy about Alek x Deryn fail to realize how cool she is. (And how the fact that she likes Deryn makes her all the more awesome--because you know by the end she knows "Dylan's" secret, and then kisses her just out of curiousity!!!! Please, feel free to read into this, and realize the awesome!!!!
I beleive that Lilit is the ulitimate symbol of freedom in all senses--she is not constrained by gender! Even Deryn is held back by this, but Lilit is completely free! Isn't great for Westerfeld to have included such a character? Go thank him.) Forget Deryn (whom I love as much as the rest of you)--Lilit is the ultimate rule-breaker, the true (*sigh* I can help but feel this term has an odd connotation, but...) feminist. She's openly a girl, and she doesn't let it stop her! Not to mention she is well-versed in several languages, can fight incredibly, is A GREAT STALKER (lol) and is A FREAKIN REBEL!
She could probably beat Alek any day, and against Deryn...well, let's just say that'd be one heck of fight.
Plus she's an orphan. If that doesn't win your sympathy, than you probably think Gary is the bad guy too! (Look it up, fellow Poke-tards, and weep!)
AND she is just so dang fun to draw! Look back though the book and oogle at Thompson's awesomeness. My crappy one-minute doodle does not do him (or her) justice.
Gah. My kittah is chewing on my tablet's wire gotta go ki--stop it. That's right. Stop him.

Japan shall be interesting... I hate to say it, but I don't think you will be finding people like Lilit over there (a bit more traditional and isolated).
I am also a supporter of Alek x Deryn.

Westerfeld really has an uncanny way making thee story turn out the way I daydream about it going(only even better!) X3 so I hope he does it again.

I like Lilit too, I didn't really see her getting in the way of Alek and Deryn at all. If anything, she made the moment where Deryn tells Alek her true colors all the more dramtic.
And yeah, while Deryn's really brave and free-thinking and all that, even she has some boundaries (kissing girls out of curiosity one of them lol). Lilit's the true rebel here.
And the whole time during Behemoth, I wanted to smack my favorite character upside his royal little head for being a sexist pig. (He's still my favorite character though...one of them)

I wouldn't want Alek any other way; it suits his time and country. I'd rather be tempted to smack him upside the head for being a sexist, than smack Westerfeld for making a charater unrealistically open-minded. His close-mindedness is his defining (and in my opinion best and most entertaining) feature! ^^
And yes, I completely agree, that kiss will no doubt make the moment Alek finds out Deryn's secret all the more fantastic! XD

You're right about the realistic-ness, of course; creating an extremely open-minded PRINCE of all people would've been ridiculous. But it didn't stop me from flicking him every time he said something discriminating. Seriously, though, either way his close-mindedness is not helpful in the least to poor Deryn. XD

I really do love Lilit, and I think she gets too much crap about "getting in the way" of Alek/Deryn, which is just barking silly.
(Plus, her design is also gorgeous!)

(Deryn is my favorite, very very very closely followed by Alek. I love them to bits. /crazy fangirl mode)

Right now just about all the characters are battling it out in my mind to be my favorite. XD I can never tell who's winning. But I'll tell you that Alek and Deryn are the top contenders, as well as Bovril and (of course) Lilit.

Newkirk is a bit of a mini-beserker, remember?! XD When it came to Deryn's fist battle, she was bumbling around and Newkirk was all "GRRRR!". Plus Newkirk survived some major burns, and still managed to crawl up a rope for several feet under extreme condititons. He may not have the guts and natural grit Deryn has, but give the boy some credit!

Newkirk makes me laugh. He is frightened of the beasts that he enlisted to work with. He gives me headaches sometimes. I agree that he has his moments, but as soon as they are over, he reverts to his usual ... erm ... Newkirk-y self. ...

I agree with pretty much everything you said in your artist comments. Lilit is right now my fave female character in the series. She's pretty damn awesome, but kind of under-loved by the fans (probably because like you said, they're AlekxDeryn fans) I hope she makes an appearance in the third book...but she probably won't DX
You have inspired me to draw fan art! Normally I avoid drawing fan art like the plague after I had a Blah-Bleach phase.

Hahaha! I agree completely. Lilit wasn't annoying at first--just a little offputting. You felt like she was invading the awesome ensemble of characters we already had. But of course, you love her by the end, and her touch of madness.
I actually like Deryn more, her accent being a big part of the reasons why
