Description
"We've only got four minutes to save the world..."I was listening to BPM Sirius Radio when I was sketching this out hence the wacky title but it kinda fits.
Just a really rough sketch of something that I'm working on in spurts here and there. The book is called AIRTIGHT NOMAD.
The story revolves around a guy who is an airtight nomad which is the proper title for a space bum or hobo. Essentially he floats from planet to planet, finding odd jobs and hitching his next ride between the stars.
There is a reason he's out there in the vast wastes of space, he's searching for something but alot of other adventures get in the way of the Airtight Nomad.

Truth is I've got stuff done for this already...sorta. Not ready to share just yet, but done. I only wish I had the mythical artist block-it would make this so much easier.

i'm also in the more clusterfuck situation - too much stuff to be done than having the time to do the shit. Artist block i interpreted/ noticed it on me as a mere disgust towards the art swag in general. last year i even hated myself on top of disliking comics and whatever belonged to it (and having a buttload of stuff to do in that sector, haha).
If you like having a dude a look on the Nomad - -

I feel that. You have to get the work done even if you're not happy with your results but as long as the client is (in a situation involving a client, anyway) that's all that really matters. It's the personal side of it, the side the general public will never get to see or feel or experience that makes it hard sometimes. You just have to keep smiling and acting like everything is okay even though from a creative standpoint you're dying inside.
I didn't understand that last part though.

Something like this just takes a few minutes to sketch out since I'm not really trying to get things spot on just focused on capturing a "feel" for the piece.
Glad you liked it and thanks for looking!

Thanks Garth!
While it's not meant to have that Cowboy Bebop sci-fi/western feel to it I guess I could see how people would pick up on that since it has become the default trend as of late. For me it's more of a mash-up of MacGyver and the Hulk tv shows but set in space and without the Hulking out. This poor schlub is looking for something out in the stars and he gets into all sorts of shenanigans along the way using his sharp tinkering skills to help him out of tough binds.
Of course in the first story (which is already in the layout stages) he hangs out with a rancher so there ya go.
I don't know if this is something I'm going to finish soon-there's other stuff on my plate as well that demands a bit more of my attention-but I am aiming for the book to drop next year in time for the con season.
As of now it looks like it's going to be a graphic novel with a meaty pagecount and the stories inside will all be self-contained but intwined by a subplot that ties all the seperate tales together.
I'd like to see it get to a point where I can just turn the creative reins over to folks who want to take a crack at doing stories set in this universe and having them run with the concept just for fun and to see what they can do.

I was going for the whole "reluctant hero" look which is essentially the role our character here ends up playing in his adventures. The flying chunkcs of space rock are just an added bonus for some cool lighting effects.

Noticed your signature's backwards - what'd you do, flip the image?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
stalk In reply to Bright-Raven [2009-06-06 04:14:06 +0000 UTC]
Yup, and when I ink it it'll be this way as well. (Hopefully I'll get the sig right in that one! )
While the piece is strong both ways I liked it flipped like this. It helps with the balance, flow, and composition of the piece.
It's also one of the ways I check my work digitally by flipping the image and seeing if there are any mistakes I may have missed by using the mirror.
The real kicker is that I don't usually sign my sketchy stuff but I guess it being a concept of my own it just flew out there.
It's weird what people notice isn't it? What did you think about the actual piece though?
๐: 0 โฉ: 1
Bright-Raven In reply to stalk [2009-06-06 05:30:33 +0000 UTC]
I noticed it because I didn't know what it was in the small view at first.
What do I think about it? Okay, remember you asked...
The figure layout and suit design is very nice.
Stuff that I think about when looking at the piece kinda take the wind out of the sails, though:
*** If he's floating out in space, I would hope he'd have the helmet on, which he doesn't. So that kind of throws me a little, and makes me question the background. Should he be floating in space on little asteroid pieces in orbit of what looks to be a planet with a sun / star coming out from behind the planet as your light source... or should this pose be him standing on the edge of a cliff on an alien world, looking up into the night sky, and you do another drawing entirely with the helmet on where he's floating out there among the asteroids?
*** Why does he have all that wired head gear if he has to put a seal helmet on? It doesn't look bad, mind you, it just makes me think about the design asthetics and the technology of character's suit.
*** Is there supposed to be one antenna or multiple antennas? It looks like you have three? I'd go with just one, personally. The more loose stuff you have, the more likely something will break, and in our age of wireless already, ar we even going to have antenna stuff in the future? Still, it's a nice throwback design, and like I say, one is good. Three however might be a bit excessive.
***The multiple bootstraps look tacked on, like an afterthought to try and add detail. You've got this nice theme of circular apparatus going on throughout the suit, and then here's this square/rectangular element on the boot that just doesn't jibe with the rest of the suit. Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with it and it's well drawn. I just wonder if changing it to an oval or circular clasp design wouldn't be more true to the overall design of the suit.
Again, none of this means you screwed up. It's just little things to think about that you may find noteworthy.

S'okay, my wife thought my sig was some kind of spacebug which gave me all sorts of ideas!
Yep, I did ask and I'm glad you decided to share. You bring up some good points even though some are very subjective as far as personal design aesthetic goes and I understand that without knowing too much about the character it can be real easy to misunderstand why certain things work the way they do in that character's universe, but that is no one's fault. It is your honest opinion and whatever the reasons for the design, if they don't gell with your ideals then it's just not going to work for you no matter what.
I appreciate your honesty and I'm glad you took the time to really look the piece over and tell me what you thought. By and far I'm not perfect in what I try to do (quite the opposite usually) and it's good to see that there are folks out there that are really looking at the work.
Thanks!

Bright-Raven In reply to stalk [2009-06-07 01:06:56 +0000 UTC]
Yup. Subjective thoughts that you can take or leave. I wouldn't say I was expressing any "ideal", as much as suggesting some alternatives that could possibly improve the piece. Wasn't suggeting it needed to be "perfection". LOL

stalk In reply to Bright-Raven [2009-06-07 11:46:21 +0000 UTC]
No worries. I know that when things are typed people on the other end of the screen might add a certain tone or voice or emotion to them but I wasn't trying to sound dismissive of your views.
Like I said they're good points and I always take into consideration what people have to say about my art whether it's good, bad, or ambivelant.
Perfection is also subjective because what one percieves as perfection another may see as failure. Not to get all Zen about it but as long as we're having a blast and getting the artistic juices pumping I'm all for it!

That needs to go on a t-shirt!
As for the logo, no rush or deadline really-just if you have a spare moment or you're feeling inspired to take a crack at it. I'm doing some other work right now and AIRTIGHT NOMAD is just sitting in the layout and design stage currently but whenever I can I work on it in spurts.

I'm sure he'll run into his fair share of cosmic cuties of both the human AND alien persuasion. That's the beauty of this concept-the sky (or space in this case) is the limit to what can happen.

Hey Will, good to hear from ya bud.
This is just the generic spacesuit look, because he's a drifter and just kind of patches up his suit as he goes it'll change in appearence and function. I wanted to do something with some room to grow and not be held down too much by the design.
Thanks!
