A COLD WAR SECRET REVEALED! I had some time and figured this out tonight through careful research and a knowledge of cold war technology gained from watching many spy movies. Why is Karin special? Is she more than eye candy? Why does she historically wear seemingly inappropriate clothing into battle...especially shoes? Is it mere fan service for male readers? NO! I say!
Let us examine the facts using research from the original comics.
Karin Grace (medical professional; possesses ESP, & Telekinetic powers, expert in the use of many weapons, including micro explosives).
Now supporting research from original comics:
Brave and the Bold comics volume 1: Karin's Shoeless condition is shown in #25 (in only one shoe as she is left stranded at sea on the wing of a plane). Also shown on the covers of issues #26 (shoeless on matchbox, being attacked by seagull at sea after being shrunken down by cosmic rays); 27 (losing her water ski when attacked by sea monster, it's still footwear so we'll count it); 37 (losing right shoe when attacked & grabbed by cyclops), 2nd story (shown losing right show while hanging from dock attacked by dinosaur. Also noteworthy- in story she is seen in flats until they "arm up" to fight dinosaurs-she THEN dons a utility belt and red high heels, And is the first to deploy micro explosives); 38 (lost right shoe and losing left shoe while hanging from statue of liberty); 39 ( missing left shoe while escaping giant crocodile).
Why does Karin do this and why does Flag have her dress this way? Beyond distracting the bad guys, is there a benefit? And who is really in charge? Doesn't karin seem to end up in harms way despite Flag's protective appearance? Is she secretly in command? Being a mind-reader she has immediate access to the combined knowledge and consciousness of the group. What is REALLY capable of?
Stalk: Perhaps Your picture holds the key. When in battle she invariably drops her shoe when a significant danger presents itself. (seemingly an inconvenience to a damsel in distress...right?) Wrong. My educated guess: Her easily removable, and on a woman in combat, might i say...ignorable (by an engaged enemy anyway) shoes likely contain a weapon of last resort. A powerful explosive capable of destroying anything too big for them to handle with conventional means or her ESP. The obvious drawback is that it would kill them too. Hence is has been placed cleverly by her, perhaps hundreds of times but thankfully never used. She also often apparently retains the other shoe, perhaps as a pointed climbing tool, defensive weapon...or more likely as a secondary explosive.
Note: in other depictions Karin is shown to be seemingly losing, dropping, or even holding her sexy stiletto. Karin's look of shock here may betray the greatest secret of the last century.
Did their foe turn the tables on them irrevocably. Karin seems to be carefully placing her shoe with her highly skilled ultra-thin-nomex-stockinged toe directly into the robot's air-intake. Could she be taking the ultimate drastic action...could this truly be the end of the Suicide Squad?

Wow. That is a lot of knowledge and research you just shared and a tip of the longbox lid for how thorough you were in stating your references. I don't know what to say, really. Whether meant tongue-in-cheek or as an honest discourse on a comic book character and how her handling over her various appearances can be explained right down to the loss of her chosen and almost always inappropriate footwear, your commentary is just plain awesome.
I appreciate your candor and your explanations are both fun and workable especially given the source material. I suspect that the person who originally commissioned this and the other Task Force X and Karin-centric pieces would probably have a better understanding of all that information but I'm glad to walk away from this having learned a little something more about not just this work but the whole of the Task Force X.
Thank you.

Forgive me, but it that Mechani-Kong himself? Or just a homage design?
If the former, that's one of the better Mechani-Kong's I've ever seen, making 'him' look truly like there's an evil intellegence in that robotic face of his.

It is the Mechani-Kong and I used shots from the film and pictures from old japanese toy magazines as reference when drawing it. Thanks! I'm glad some of that menance came through in the final piece because I was really worried about doing the design justice.

It really is one of the best Machinakong pictures our there, and also it brings a smile to my face to know that the 'international Judas' known as Doctor Hu is still alive and active in the super villain community

ah yes, Mechani-Kong! Proof positive that the Mecha-Godzilla formula works on just about any giant monster. This is great, and such an awesome throwback to days of watching 'Superhost's' Saturday Matinee on channel 43. Introduced me to Godzilla and company as well as many others. Nice job on this image. Also, your distressed damzel is very fetching! Luvit!

Your style has really developed a helluva lot. Maybe it's the subject matter that brings that fact to light, weird steam punk-ish sci-fi tech, giant hippo robots and bruisers and babes. The detailed hatching effect works well in that respect; gives everything a lot of texture and appeal. And of course, the marker work is stellar.
My favourite element of the entire piece, personally, has to be the fashion and folds. Gadgets aside, the fashion of each character makes me intrigued about who they are and what they do. What's the time period, by the way? I'm not sure who or what Task force X is, so forgive my layman predisposition.

Thanks, Garth! I'm glad you see some improvement in what I'm posting up. I'd hate to just be sharing stuff that is boring and shows no growth. Every day with every piece I try and do a little something different even if it's not apparent at first glance.
Task Force X was DC's original Suicide Squad formed to fight monsters, aliens, and other-worldly foes. Just a group of unique, non-powered people they had to rely on their wits and gadgets to overcome the challenges set before them. The time period is set sometime in the 1960's and I tried my best to capture the look and feel of the cool sci-fi/monster movies of that era.
