Description
Well, in case anyone was interested in what I was up to behind the scenes, during this relative hiatus in the last several weeks, it was working on a prospective MLP fan-film, called Regal, headed by one Ian Ballinger .Regal was intended to be the story of Equestria being completely taken over by Changelings, the princesses being kidnapped, and the Mane 6, our heroines, had to rescue them and all of Equestria against seemingly insurmountable odds.
But as it turns out, the Regal film was not to be. It has now come to my attention that it has been canceled. Just as well that it happened sooner, rather than later, when more time and effort had been invested.
The Bright side? I get to share with you what I created as a concept artist for this film project. I mostly did “bad guy” character designs. Any and all constructive criticism is welcome.
Above are depicted the Changelings. I hope you like them.
I will probably move to my scraps later.
UPDATE: Wow, I honestly didn't think this would be considered good enough to actually be accepted by EqD! Thanks so much.

Have there ever been a Half Pony (Any Kind) Half Changeling? You know, a Stallion changeling that have fallen in love to a mare pony, that a changeling was trying to capture but became difficult to approached because she felt alone someway and he fell bad but she's still kind, he stays with her later revile himself and she accepted him and then secretly mate with each other, of curse she''l have to leave him if the other Changeling especially the Queen ever finds out and of curse she take the child for it to avoid its fate at the Queen hooves!

I'm sure there's a premise for an existing fanfiction in there, though I can't name it. I suggest you search around fimfiction.net. There are a lot of stories that play around with the Changeling concept.

Do Changelings breathe through their skin like insects do? If so, airborne poisons would be extremely effective. Bring in the Raid

Starbat In reply to lazerbem [2013-10-09 23:31:35 +0000 UTC]
No. I don't think the insects' mechanism of respiration would be efficient enough to support a creature as large and active as a pony, or "pony-like" creature. So I figure they use lungs.
Raid is still a poison though.

Perhaps they breathe through the holes in their legs? I can think of no other purpose for those. Also, there have been creatures that used the insect system of respiration at that size, Arthropleura, Brontoscorpio, and Meganeura come to mind. Of course, they were in a richer atmosphere but still

Starbat In reply to lazerbem [2013-10-10 00:33:29 +0000 UTC]
Exactly. In today's atmosphere, it would never work. So unless you figure that the Equestrian atmosphere is 33% oxygen, it would not work for changelings....

lazerbem In reply to Starbat [2013-10-10 00:39:04 +0000 UTC]
Then what is the purpose of those holes? They're utterly useless and would provide ways for them to get stuck

The MLP Comics revealed those holes were made during the first fight between Celestia and the Changelings long before the series started...

The comics are not good canon. The sirens and Sombra are proof of that.

StreamOverlord In reply to lazerbem [2018-06-11 17:21:42 +0000 UTC]
Actually, there were eventually comics made about them, explaining how they came to be who they are now...heck, the comics even redeemed Sombra, which I hope happens as well in the show!

lazerbem In reply to StreamOverlord [2018-06-12 15:42:10 +0000 UTC]
That was my point. The comics doubled back on the Dazzlings' backstory and Sombra was given a goal besides conquering the world, but we don't see nor hear of any Umbrum even in the dark future. The show doesn't care about the comics basically

I don't like the designs, the best one being the Dragonfly. But it's fangs are so long it looks silly. But I can see it as a air-to-ground changeling, that would temporary paralyze whatever they string with it's tail.

I love your drawings of individual classes of changelings as they're my most adored species out of MLP. However I'm curious if you have a guide or tips to drawing similar stylizations. I don't want to blatantly rip you but your style definitely inspires me and if anything, will hopefully help me past drawing their bloody heads.

Thank you for your comment. It makes me glad to know that my artwork can be inspirational to others.
In terms of general proportions with my personal style, I usually figure the typical pony character to be about three "heads" tall, and the torso about one and a half "heads" long. The elbows and knees extend to just below the bottom of the torso. The top corner of the eye is usually just in front of the lower corner of the ear, and the bottom corner of the eye is just below the bridge of the muzzle. Those are my typical "landmarks", so to speak.
Judging by your gallery, it looks like you may benefit from breaking down the structure of the face into basic polygonal shapes. For instance, I look at the snout as being a kind of 3D "box" structure over the bottom third of the head, and then I round it out, or add details from there, after I use the "box" base to determine proportion and perspective. Breaking any structure down into its basic shapes is a great exercise, whether its a face, limbs, or hands.
It's also a good idea to note where the bones and joints are located in the legs. It helps keep proportions consistent. If you look at this little sketch dump of mine here, [link] , you can see hints of where I used a framework of sticks and circles to sketch out how their limbs would lay out, before I fleshed them out. You can probably see this best with Surprise, in the lower left hand corner.
If you find yourself unable to figure out what is quite "wrong" with the way your sketch is turning out, it is often helpful to turn the picture upside down. Mistakes tend to jump out at you more easily when the brain can't so readily "interpret" what it wants to see, and you can regard the sketch a little more objectively.
Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you other than to keep practicing and keep experimenting to find your ideal style. We all had to start somewhere. Good luck.

Yep. Pretty much old queen takes about half of the workers and moves out in search for new place to create a hive. That flying mass of trouble is what's called "swarm".

If that was honey bees kept by people, beekeepers then have fun catching this mess and placing it in hive box.
