Description Well, in case anyone was interested in what I was up to behind the scenes, during this relative hiatus in the last several weeks, it was working on a prospective MLP fan-film, called Regal, headed by one Ian Ballinger .

Regal was intended to be the story of Equestria being completely taken over by Changelings, the princesses being kidnapped, and the Mane 6, our heroines, had to rescue them and all of Equestria against seemingly insurmountable odds.

But as it turns out, the Regal film was not to be. It has now come to my attention that it has been canceled. Just as well that it happened sooner, rather than later, when more time and effort had been invested.

The Bright side? I get to share with you what I created as a concept artist for this film project. I mostly did β€œbad guy” character designs. Any and all constructive criticism is welcome.

Above are depicted the Changelings. I hope you like them.

I will probably move to my scraps later.

UPDATE: Wow, I honestly didn't think this would be considered good enough to actually be accepted by EqD! Thanks so much.

If you mean a parasitic wasp, then yes.

Hate to go full nerd on you, but parasitic wasps don't form hives, and don't have queens.

Starbat In reply to Necroant [2013-06-30 19:43:29 +0000 UTC]

I realize that, but we aren't talking about wasps but imaginary creatures. So we can just take bits and pieces of different real creatures when inventing the features of a changeling.

Necroant In reply to Starbat [2013-06-30 20:50:24 +0000 UTC]

So, though changelings have different social structure, they still have some traits of parasitic wasps. I can see that

So, I've decided to use these designs as inspiration for a few things of my own... I definitely like the logic of each form, and as has been said before, they fit an insectoid hive race well...

Well thanks very much. Be sure to give me a link when you do, as I'd love to see what you create.

Oh, if only... if I did it'd be in the form of writing, and it's not completely pony-related anyway (it's for a Dungeons and Dragons campaign/setting of mine with heavy pony influences, featuring a humanized Mane Six).

Doesn't mean I wouldn't love to ramble about it at length, but I just don't want anyone or anypony's hopes up.

Wow, you really expand the whole idea to become a brood of some sort. Especially now you get into the whole Zerg vibe.

Chrysalis makes a great Queen of Blades. Don't you think?

I have a small question that I have been meaning to ask ever since their early appearance.
Are Changeling blood green?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Starbat In reply to Redtriangle [2013-05-21 10:31:28 +0000 UTC]

Interesting question, but why ask me? All we can do is speculate.

We never saw the Changelings bleed in the episode, A Canterlot Wedding, thanks to the G-rating, so there are no direct canon clues.

If we play into the notion that they are like insects, then we can suppose their hemoglobin is copper-based, like that of crustaceans, making their blood blue, or bluish-green.

However, if we suppose they are still more like ponies than insects, then their blood is probably still red. I personally imagine a particularly DARK shade of red, kind of like orc blood, as in the Lord of the Rings.

But again, that's just me speculating.

I would hang this as a poster on my wall just because it has that design feel. Now to find someone who can turn these kinds of pictures into posters.

Starbat In reply to Slycoopertr [2013-05-09 11:47:07 +0000 UTC]

Well.....

I could BRIEFLY submit this poster as a print here on DA, just long enough for those who express interest to order them.

I just wouldn't want to make a habit out of this because it's not my franchise.

If you want, let me know.

Thanks for your comment.

Starbat In reply to Slycoopertr [2013-05-10 01:32:43 +0000 UTC]

The price depends on the size and the lustre you want.

The 76cm X 114cm version would be just over three and a half feet tall. I might suggest that one, but it's up to you.

Starbat In reply to Slycoopertr [2013-05-10 04:55:51 +0000 UTC]

Well, you can choose a smaller size that fits your budget.

Up to you. Let me know, and I will take it down again.

Quick question. Over the last day or so, I've been getting a surge of favorites on this particular deviation, so I have to wonder if I've been featured in someone's blog recently, or something. Would you know about that?

Thanks again for your comment.

Alright finally found some time away from drawing to comment! I seriously needed too.....

Wow this is amazing! Seriously!

I've also taken upon expanding on the Changelings just... Mines was a lot more radical then what you did here. Haha~

I've created an entire continent with several different breeds of changelings and different types of Hives and there leaders.

But yours fits a lot more closer to lore then mines since mines basically have specially evolved into certain traits. Like flight, or living a subterranean life, an aquatic one, night time, spit acid, agile, etc. etc......

Yours fits in more to the MLP FiM universe then mines...

... and don't get me started on how well they are all drawn!!!!!~<33333

ALL HAIL TO THE CHANGELINGS!~<3

Starbat In reply to ZeksMorshar [2013-04-10 09:52:20 +0000 UTC]

Interesting. Yeah, I had at least one other design idea that was even more radical than the antennaed and "rhinoceros horn" designs, but I wanted to keep it at least somewhat plausible within the context of the show.

Which in my opinion came out great! No... Awesome! It seriously fits in with the default MLP universe.

Cool, its canon for me now. Also in my headcanon there are a guard cast too. they are 5-10 times bigger than a normal changelings, they have teeth that looks like tusks and Chrysails using them to protect the hive.

I did have other Changeling ideas, but the film director didn't go for them. Now that it doesn't matter, I might develop one or two of the other designs.

I was. Ian Ballinger was going to direct an MLP fan film called "Regal". But it's out of production now.

It's all explained in the description.

Though, my headcanon also adds elements of StarCraft's Zerg, in that Chrysalis is a Queen, just not the only Queen (similar to Zerg Cerebrates).

Like the Zerg, they serve a central super-being (the Zerg's "super-being" is the Overmind. I haven't decided what the Changeling "Overmind" would be called).
