Description A gif animation tutorial using the GIMP program. So you just get an idea how I do the animations.
You can see the animation here
Part two: here

Sorry if there are mistakes... If you have any questions I'll explain and add them here to make this tutorial more complete.

Edit: Changes in the new GIMP (2.8):
-You can use the "smooth stroke" option to draw nice lines even in lower zoom then 200%. (you find it at every drawing tool options dialog)
-You can add all the layers you need for one "frame" in a "group layer" By doing so, the "playback" will play the group layers and not every layer separately. (And you won't have to delete the sketchy layers every time or merge them often) In the end before exporting, merge the layer groups one by one by right-clicking on them and choosing "merge layer group". I have a script that does this automatically for all layers. I don't remember the link so just google it
-This is something that was in the old GIMP too, but I haven't mentioned it here: For every "frame" (layer or layer group) rename it with "(100ms)" at the end. If you want that frame to be slower add a bigger number then 100, if you want it to go faster add a smaller number. If you want ALL layers/frames to have the same speed, in the last window when exporting, choose the speed you want at "Delay between frames...100 milliseconds" and add a tick at "Use delay entered above for all frames"
-When you finish, you EXPORT it as ".gif" and not SAVE it.

In photoshop you can play the animation too. The tool "time line" allows it. You only have to add a frame when you finish the draw. It is some difficult but it allows you to work the animation in real time. But if you use Gimp i' ll try it sometime ( I just start to animate ^^U your experience is obvious).

That is what I was saying X3. "You add a frame when you finish to draw". In GIMP you don't do that, while you draw it shows up in the animation, every stroke you do It is the same as the image preview. So if it doesn't looks right, you see it right away.

Good luck with your animations ^^

Oh sweet Jesus lady, doing this in GIMP like this must take you forever You should definitely check out TV Paint one day, has the same nice painterly traditional effect but is a dedicated animation program.

I definitely admire the awesome dedication and great quality animation you've got out of GIMP

Well, as they say is not the tool that matters ^^ I just feel comfortable with GIMP. You know how many people like SAI to draw, I tried it & couldn't "get" its logic lol - the thing that makes the strokes more smooth was confusing. Even in GIMP, even though there's this "smoothing" thing I rarely use it X'D

I use Photoshop and save it as GIF. I tried posting it on deviantart (Kind of new here) and it requires a preview. I don't know where to continue on from there. Do you know how to post GIF's to deviantart? Please and thank you. :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

starca In reply to KiroWatsui [2014-05-21 22:22:41 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you need a preview ^^ I personally scale down the original gif for the preview, but you can also use a still image. (So you basically upload 2 files) Also, the category you put it in, has to be one that accepts gifs. (most of deviantart's categories don't. I always use the "Digital Art/Animation" one)

This tutorial was invaluable to get me started, though a lot of minor steps such as how to get to the export dialogue would have been helpful (it's probably common knowledge I just suck at technology)
Anyway, this is what you helped me create!! bakalobo.deviantart.com/art/Ya…

It was in the description: For every "frame" (layer or layer group) rename it with "(100ms)" at the end. If you want that frame to be slower add a bigger number then 100, if you want it to go faster add a smaller number.
