The medium I used here is scratchboard- basically I took a knife, and gouged out all of the white. Dot by dot. Geh. I want to experiment with different techniques- like long scratches, if I get a chance. I failed to give back a knife to the art room. I doubt the teacher cares overly much, as he's retiring this year. I'll miss him and his nasty anime comments. He even snatched away this picture as I was contemplating adding something to the blank right corner. He was such a warm, caring human being.

I haven't touched scratchboard since highschool! It's a fun medium, but you're right, it takes forever to define shapes on it.

lol, i was just looking through your gallery and came across, this lovely scratchboard. i think the detailing is impeccable and i think the textures are genious. i did try and attempt a scratch board myself, but i got a bit angry at it and decided to make a high contrast johnny the homocidal maniac pic instead. its in my gallery. and also i think its funny how your art teacher makes all those nasty anime comments (mine is the same way) anyways, this pic is an instant fave and i think i might watch you as i think you are very talented and is like to see what else you can do so feel free to drop me a line, and well be in touch. great work again

*Laughs* I'll check out your scratchboard, too. :3 My art teacher makes my day. XD And thank you for the comment.

I'm rather glad your art teacher snatched away this image before you filled it. Sometimes less is more. A great peace.

Thank you. The temptation to fool around with the corner is being reduced. Your art is really fantastic, by the way.

Damn... That must have taken a lot of effort. Star, this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen and I'm glad you didn't go completely blind while doing it.

I would actually find this hard, especially going through it "reverse". Good job!! :claps:

Thanks! I was kind of iffy about it at first (I screwed up a lot in the beginning, actually), but things got easier as time went on.

Is there some way to go over your mistakes?
I wouldn't know because I've never used a scratch board before.

No, once you scratch away, it's gone! If it's a really, really bad error, then a black pen is the only way to go. But it looks bad close up, so I wouldn't recommend using it.

Okay, thanks.
Do you think that maybe you could sketch out your picture idea on a piece of tracing paper and then put the paper on the scratch board? And then you could scratch into the board while tracing the picture on the tracing paper.

Hmm, that would be a bit awkward, to get precision cuts. I just sketched it out with lightly pencil, then scratched away.

Okie. ^^ Thanks.

And about the manga contest. I've already got an idea and I'm willing to color my own art, I'm just wondering if you could help me make a proper line art. I'm a bit shaky with the tablet and so when I try to ink things on the computer they usually turn out wrong.

Ooh, and I can practice my inking skillz! Actually, my tablet hand is just as shaky (which is why I use ink), but I have a couple new lineart techniques I want to try out. My question is, would you prefer thick inking, or thin inking?

Thin inks:

Thick inks:

I've been gauss-blurring and separating my lineart lately- my lineart usually spans two or three layers. Can you open .psd files?

Flamorta In reply to Starlitdragon [2006-06-21 18:15:38 +0000 UTC]

Thick would be easier for me to color in. And I'm not sure about opening .psd files but I don't think it'd matter. I have a program that can only color .jpg .bmp and another file type that originates from that program only. Maybe if you could merge the lines together and just get rid of the sketch below I could color it in?

Starlitdragon In reply to Flamorta [2006-06-22 14:32:31 +0000 UTC]

I'll merge 'em. I remember colouring all on one layer too, back in the day- once you get a hold of layers, it's like night and day. XD If you hand me the stuff before the end of July, I'll ink it for you.

I noticed the shading or should I say lighting that you made behind the dreads.
HAha, I did the same thing for my scratchboard (uh..well, Megan handed it in as her own) and I was really worried because that was the only only lighting on the whole thing (just like yours is behind the head) I made mine behind the head too and I was worried. Good story.
But you really pulled it off. You know...the fact that without the background lighting there would be no visable dreads. I think I'm just being confusing.

I seem to recall seeing this before. Have I, or are we just suffering from telepathic-link-syndrome? I love it. Especially the fingers. Very nice job, Luce.

*Laughs* I stuck a preview of the half-finished version in my journal once- you may have spotted it there! Thank you, Rena. <3

The fingers are a bit long in proportion (perhaps the knuckles aren't defined enough) but that's one hell of a good job you did. The facial details and the necklace are excellent.

Starlitdragon In reply to chocolate-rebel [2006-06-12 22:34:31 +0000 UTC]

I agree with you on the long fingers- though in the reference, they were quite long as well (though maybe not as gibbed. XD). [link]

I was slightly concerned that it would be seen as an accident, but that's alright. If the photographer photomanipped herself, she did a good job.

Thanks! Scratchboard is fun to pick up- you scratch away at the black, and get white. It's like working in reverse. ^^

This is such a good scratch board. in my opinion, if you had added something to the blank corner, it would have taken away from teh finsihed image.

how long did it take you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Starlitdragon In reply to Lord-Yggdrasill [2006-06-12 02:41:34 +0000 UTC]

I think a week. Not as long as I thought it would, actually.

Mr. Goodman thought the same thing, too. XD
