Description Art trade with . Her character, Piirissaar (an Estonian island ~ Eeee )~ I'm pretty late, sorry.

I... Didn't know what title I should give this, so I went with the number of flowers. When you give flowers to people in Estonia, the numbers of flowers should be odd numbered. Even numbered amount are for the dead.

On another note, I discovered that I can't draw backgrounds anymore. orz

Really? XD Well, Hiiumaa would love a sister, so yay! But both Saaremaa and Hiiumaa are the worst at Russian... D: Saaremaa can say the most basic things, but Hiiumaa only knows "hello" and "Good bye", which is probably fail seeing that they've been under Russian rule for almost 3 centuries (to be fair, Russia never talked to Hiiumaa or cared about her. Saaremaa had a lil bit more contact with Russia, but still not much).

Oh, no, it's alright. I don't think you're rude at all!

it's kinda logical that their Russian isn't good, thay almost never had a connection with Russia. But yeh piirissaar is half Russian herself: her mother was a russian beauty ((haha) The first permanent residents on Piirissaar were Russians. Mainly old believers and soldiers who didn't wanted to go to army hehe

Yay ~ !

Naw, it's just that Saaremaa already has the big-sister role for the HetaEst characters (Muhu may or may not be her biological sibling), so having another little sibling isn't really anything new for her. She'd be more excited for an older sibling. XD Hiiumaa's an only child as far as everyone knows, so it's more fun for her.

Piirissaar is really unique amongst Estonian islands! XD She has Russian roots instead of Swedish, and isn't she the only Estonian island in Lake Peipus? She's pretty far away from the rest of the islands!

She is unique! A lonely island in big lake Peipus, far away from her loved ones

She is about 3 years older than dirt. XDDD -shot- Kiddin', kiddin'. Her real age is unknown, but she's older than 1400 years, that's for sure - from what I can find, the earliest time she was mentioned historically was in the 7th century when she got into a fight with Sweden (she won. Killed Sweden's king and kicked him out of her island.)). Physically, she's 25-26.

Aww... How sweet. XD But gosh, now Hiiumaa's probably going to introduce herself as her sister's boyfriend and weird everyone out (and this time it's not entirely a lie...!)...

haha true! let's see -takes out the calculator- Piirissaar is about  645 years old, starting from the point she was mentioned .. so  she's younger indeed.. Their physical ages are actually logical too.. a bit. Piiri is 7 years younger than Saaremaa..
Oh wow Saaremaa is so badass so cool

Oh, Saaremaa was so much trouble (Still is, but mostly only to Tallinn.)! Attacking Denmark, kidnapping Norway's prince and queen, stealing Sweden's front doors (yes, she stole his front doors.) and burning his house to the ground... Denmark and Sweden were so sick of her... XD Especially poor Sweden - that battle in the 7th century wasn't the only time she killed Sweden's kings.

StarlitHoliday In reply to BakaSui [2015-05-30 14:32:21 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. XD Tartu's the oldest city (and 2nd oldest overall, I think - I can't find anyone else who is older than him other than Saaremaa)! Ah, well. He may be as old as fart, but he's still young and youthful at heart (that rhymed).

It wasn't always fighting against them though - sometimes, she joined them in their fights against others/eachother (she and some others joined Sweden during one of his wars against Denmark (who had Livonia and other people fighting by his side), for example. Sweden, Saaremaa and co. won that war, btw. Yay!). XD Oh, those were the good, ol', wild days...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BakaSui In reply to StarlitHoliday [2015-05-31 08:42:21 +0000 UTC]

you know, why he is so youthful? That's because very big part of the old part of Tartu is destroyed and modern architecture slowly infiltrates in -sobs wildly-
You should write a poem about Tartu!  (I know that you said that you don't understand poetry but...)

oh and now Saaremaa probably watches her old group photos of herself and the vikings standing together and on the background is burning city or sth (ah I'm sorry your discriptions give me so great picture ideas ))

StarlitHoliday In reply to BakaSui [2015-05-31 13:05:24 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah, that was an awful period. D: He almost died...

You mean write a poem about the destruction of Tartu? I've been beaten to the punch, unfortunately. By 300 years. XD Some guy named Käsu Hans (in the 18th century) wrote a poem about the destruction of Tartu (from Tartu's point of view, no less!). Also mentioned that the people of Tartu were arrogant and lived a sinful life, and so the destruction was a punishment from God and warns that the other big cities (Tallinn, Pärnu and etc) should learn from this example, or they'll suffer the same fate.

et.wikisource.org/wiki/Oh,_ma_…

I hate the fact that I can't read Estonian. D: It's written in southern Estonian dialect too, it seems, so I can't use Google translator. The world is unfair.

If I'm not wrong, he wasn't the only one who saw Tartu's dsetruction as a punishment - other poems by other people I found also criticisized Dorpat for being corrupt and sinful, and that the destruction had been God's punishment for the city. In fact, some went so far to compare Tartu to Biblical cities such as Sodom, Gomorrah and Jerusalem (all destroyed by God because they were sinful in the Bible). Needless to say, Tartu/Jüri got pretty upset when he found out about this... e.e Understandable. It's not fun to hear, right after you almost died, that your death would have been okay because you were a bad person... ;___;

But yeah, while this event had quite an impact on Tartu as whole, I think he'd still be the way he is without it. XD What with the majority of the population being youths/students and being the "city of good thoughts". It's in his personality, I think, to be youthful. Narva's city's completely rebuild from scratch except some buildings, but she's not really youthful in spirit or personality... XDD;; So I think it's just how Tartu is as a person.

Haha! XD I think it was a bit too long ago to have cameras and photos. But I agree, if there had been photos back then, she'd have a whole album full of those pictures with her smiling and doing the victory sign while buildings are burning and people fleeing in the background. Hahaha!

BakaSui In reply to StarlitHoliday [2015-06-04 15:10:25 +0000 UTC]

haha nope I meant these awesome rhymes you made in your previous comment
But , ofcorse, you could write about destruction too! I have read that "oh ma vaene Tarto liin" poem before, it's kinda funny.. when I think of your OC Tartu it seems so comical that maybe one day in the past he felt extremely melancholic and wrote this poem
That's tru, Tartu must be youthful

Tbh I don't understand "Oh ma vaene Tarto liin" entirely myself -not very good in dialects-
In the first verse he asks what he had done to deserve it..
In the second he talks about how good everything was before  - school, church, nice house, animals an' stuff.
oh and so on (it's so long) ((he talks a lot about how nice life he lived

HAHA XD Yeah, he would definitely write an extremly long poem if given the chance. He doesn't talk much about his history though...

He accepts hugs, yes ~

Naww, don't put yourself down like that! It is written back in the 18th century after all. The language has probably changed enough to make it difficult to read. I struggle a lot when reading old Swedish texts too. XD Words changes their meaning over time, so even if they're still used, they don't necassarily mean the same as they did 300 years ago. I just recently found out that the word "nice" in English actually meant "stupid" in the 13th century, for example. XDDD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BakaSui In reply to StarlitHoliday [2015-06-12 19:44:14 +0000 UTC]

ehm.. I had to write them at school when we had poetry course but yeah I liked it! I find it a easier way to express my thoughts than just plain writing.. I wrote about the evening star and about dreams.(stuff like this) And when we had to write a sonnet I wrote about my question, why people always look down at the cemetery when all they can see is dust under the ground.  I think that when we really wanna see the dead ones we should just look around us and feel them in the wind and in the touch of snowflakes.. Sonnet, btw, is exact type of poem which has 14 verses and the rhymes and theme development has very strict rules
You haven't been in a touch with poetry before?

Well, I haven't thought of how I should explain or say what it really is Poems TRADITIONALLY have rhymes, that's the main difference between poetry and prose. Also, one very important thing is the rhythm. When I read a poem, I sometimes discover myself nodding the rhythm- it comes somehow automatically So, I think the traditional poems have all the things a song text has : rhymes, rhythm, verses. I guess it's usual that a musician makes his/her own melody to a well-known poem.
When the thing is about modern poetry it's very difficult. Some of these are just regular texts! But usually these are just unrhymed and .. I just know they are poems The words are placed unusually and there is some kind of.. sprit that makes it a poem    As you can see I found a topic I like (but god no I have no knowledge about it..)

((yay huggie-huggie))
hah okay, thanks you for comforting me again (you must be very patient)! Words do change and ahahaha I haven't heard of the thing about the word ''nice'' before! Its meaning was completely opposite.
My mom just got Estonian-Võru dictionary and wow  it's hella thick!! I haven't thought that you can make a dictionary like this based only on a small dialect..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StarlitHoliday In reply to BakaSui [2015-06-14 06:43:58 +0000 UTC]

Oh, right! I've had to write poems in school too! I just wrote something though... >.>;;

Oh, those sounds beautiful! You like nature, huh? That's awesome ~

That sounds amazing, to be honest. I guess I'm not very skilled with words in general - I feel like expressing myself through poetry would be harder than writing normally even. e.e;; This all sounds so complicated for me. orz I'm not a words-person, I guess...

Spirit, huh? Yeah, I guess there's some sort of spirit in them that makes them somewhat recognizable. I think I can see it too sometimes - I just have no idea how to explain it either. XDD

It's great to see you're so into poetry, though! Thanks to you, I now think I know a little what a poem is (still feel like I couldn't write one if anyone asked though. -fail-)! Do you read it a lot? Do you have any favourite poets?

Naw, it's okay. ^^ Yeah, that was a funny change! Maybe they just decided to play "Opposite" day or something and decided to make the change of "nice" permanent. Or maybe someone was really really drunk when writing a dictionary and changed the meaning of 'nice' on an accident. I really have no idea. Pffft.

We've had changes in words in Swedish too. A nice example is Runsk (the Swedish dialect in Ruhnu, which is a very archaic form of Swedish) and compare it to modern Swedish: in Runsk, their word for "speak" (språk) is actually modern Swedish' word for "language". So we who speak modern Swedish would think they sound weird, because "språk" is NOT used as a verb anymore. Like, ever. It's always a noun now. eue Anyways, they use very old words that we don't use anymore or changed the meanings of, so it usually takes me a very long time to understand any Estonian Swedish texts. XD So it's only natural for you to feel a bit lost with that poem.

THAT'S SO AWESOME! *q* I'm jealous...! Still, Võro does look pretty different from standard Estonian, so I understand why the book would be thick. And doesn't Võro dialect have a little different grammar/sentence structure? Like, in Estonian, to say "I don't know" is "ma ei tea" which has the same word order like English. But in Võro, the order is "I know don't"/"I know not", if I remember correctly. XD

BakaSui In reply to StarlitHoliday [2015-06-18 07:54:09 +0000 UTC]

Thanks I really love nature and I like to think beautiful thoughts about it (at least I think they are beautiful..) but it's so hard to express them through writing or even talking.. Tbh i'd say that I'm not a word person too - sometimes I reallly hate writing (like essays and stories).. everything sounds so stupid when I read it over.
hehe good you think like that too!
I discovered my interest in poetry only in the last autumn when we had to make prsonal collections of poems  we like.. I have two favourite Estonian authors : Jaan Kaplinski and Artur Alliksaar. They are both amazing!

haha maybe.. That makes me think maybe our history is one big joke that is based only stupid ideas of some silly stumps who just were like 'oh that sounds fun, let's try it for a day' orsth lol
That's interesting! I don't remember a word in Estonian which has changed the meaning.. I mean there are tons of them which look different but fundamentally are the same. ( but I'm sure there are the changed ones too)
It's quite awesome indeed
oh yeah you're right about the sentence structure! I haven't thought of it before but I have heard so many times when I listen old people talking how they say 'ei tia mina' (I know not). it's so natural

StarlitHoliday In reply to BakaSui [2015-06-19 18:46:44 +0000 UTC]

I really love nature too ~

Don't worry about it - if they're anything like the stuff you've told me your poems were about, they're beautiful!

Ooh, I hate writing school essays too. Ironically, it's the only thing with words that I'm good at. XDD But no kiddin'... Expressing yourself is really hard...

Oh, I see! I've read some of Jaan Kaplinski's poems. I'm afraid I don't know the language of poetry very well, but I liked the ones that I understood. XDD (completely unrelated fact: my Tartu OC's surname was originally Kaplinski after Jaan Kaplinski)

Pfft. XD It wouldn't surprise me if we really did something like that over here in Sweden.

My Estonian vocabulary is very limited, so I'm trusting you on that. XD

Oooh, that's so cool! So older people speak with more south Estonian dialect? Awesome! I've read that older people may speak with different Estonian dialects, but I wasn't sure if that still applies to the present time. Makes me happy to hear that they still speak like that ~

That reminds me, though - Võro isn't the only south Estonian dialect. And since Käsu Hans was born in Tartumaa, maybe he wrote in Tartu dialect? I can't tell the difference between standard Estonian and Tartu, but I've noticed that a lot of words in Võro ends with a "q", which is a letter the poem doesn't feature...

So, that could be another reason why the poem is hard to read it. XD It could be in Tartu dialect (which is probably more uncommon and less widespread than Võro...?)?

BakaSui In reply to StarlitHoliday [2015-06-26 12:57:27 +0000 UTC]

One can not simply hate nature!
Thank you for thinking like this

I know that feel - actually I hear it all the time that I  am a good writer (the teacher even wanted to copy one of my essays before giving it back ) but it's just unspeakably hard for me. Drawing is hard too (I can't draw half of what I'm imagining) but it's less awkward if smth goes wrong

Kaplinski writes a bit messily sometimes and it's hard to understand him but I find his poems very inspiring.
Ohh Tartu how cool!! Is kaplinski somehow connected with Tartu?

yup I think it's cool too! And sometimes confusing.. A few weeks ago I went to my countryside and on my way from bus stop to our house I met one old woman who's my grandmother's friend. She started talking to me in Võru dialect  and it was really hard to understand her. Most of the time I just smiled witlessly and nodded My grandmother doesn't speak Võru dialect but I guess she is used to it. She has many friends who talk like this.

There is possibility that ''Oh ma vaene Tardo liin'' is not written in any dialect. I kinda started to remember how our teacher told that Estonian language was normally like this in those times.. I'm not a specialist but the spelling looks a lot like German- wait what I don't even know what I'm talking !!   Well, let's say it's in Tartu dialect - it's the most logical idea.
For now Tartu dialect is mostly extinct, so I'm not sure how it looks..

Yes, I don't understand those who don't. XDD

Naww... D: maybe it becomes easier with time? Everything I draw never turns out the way it looks like in my head either... 8D;

Oh, okay! XD So I'm not the only one struggling with his poems! Haha!
He's from/born in Tartu, from what I've gathered. I ultimately changed Tartu's name because I decided to name the characters after dead people only. XD; To avoid awkwardness or accidentally insulting people.

That's so cool! Yeah, I've read that Võro is the most different from standard Estonian. Ah, I'm so happy to hear people are still speaking it ~

Tbh I don't know those who don't.. some people are just 'meh' when it comes to nature (still a bit irritating   )
yup, maybe  I just have to practice..

I'm sure the wouldn't feel insullted but it's wise to stay on a safe side C:
I remembered that one of my friend knows Kaplinski's family personally.. I'm not sure wherether I remember correctly but maybe Jaan Kaplinski even came to see one of our school  performance where we sang a song which is written by him haha But  yeah maybe it wasn't him but one member of his family..

Sure it is (I am a total amateur when it comes to Estonian dialects and stuff like this so really.. don't wait adequate answers from me ..
