Description
Concept art for Season III of Reboot. In the end they went with something much more conventional looking, but I thought this looked pretty bad-ass. Maybe the animators didn't know how to make him hold it ; )Related content

I always thought it was strange that Matrix didn't have a big gun, since he's a big guy. Like, gun is nice and all, but it just felt a little small fer him.
It makes sense that they went fer a smaller design tho, considering the gun hangs on his side, it would've looked really clunky on him if it was any bigger. Missed opportunity tho, I like this one better.

Thanks. I think what they went for in the end looked a little silly, though I suspect there was a good middle ground we could've hashed out, given the chance...

Eh probably. Though one could say that if erm "Gun" worked like a Key tool it could upgrade into this lol

Glad you like it! I drew a *lot* of gun designs over the years, including for Shadowrun. Just hasn't seemed appropriate to post 'em (for now)...

Aww, thanks. Aeon Flux too, though I don't have much to show for it...

That is entirely possible. XD
Watching the DVDs with the commentary...I never realized how much of the art/technology was being put together ON THE SPOT.
I would have felt a little less like a clueless n00b at art school had I known that. <3

Ha, yeah. I've worked on a lot of film and TV projects over the years, and Reboot definitely felt the most "seat of the pants", make it up as we went along. The broad story arc of the season was pretty solid early on, but the details shifted and changed a lot. Kind of like working in video games...

I've never made it into anything except a series of crummy retail jobs (curse you economy!).
I have a degree in animation, with some preliminary in Flash and some old programs that no one uses anymore because it was the late 90s. Sadly, I have nothing to show for it. My portfolio is more or less non-existant.

Well, sadly no one ever said a career in art is easy : (
In all seriousness though, drawing never came close to paying my bills. While I was doing most of the pen & ink drawings on this site, I was also working as a night janitor at a cafe, sweeping and mopping the floors. It was only when I switched to the video game industry (and later film) that I was able to make a comfortable living as an artist.
So I guess the thing about art careers is this: You've gotta love it enough to be willing to be poor doing it. If you don't love it quite that much, it's still one hell of an awesome hobby. That said - If you really do love it, retrain! Software is cheap, and the game industry always needs animators...

Well, when you're working minimum wage at a Big Box Store, nothing is "cheap". Trust me, I have the "poor" part down.
I've heard that said, I have yet to prove it. I'd have to go back and completely redo my portfolio (because while it was fun to work with a 1930s castiron film camera, that was also ALL WE HAD). I've gone back to school for additional certificates/training/licenses to add on to my BFA about three times now. Most recently I got a medical coding license (insurance and junk). So far, I just keep losing money.
Sorry to rant in your comments. --; Dunno if you're stateside, but right now it kinda sucks to be American.

I'm in Canada, but we've got a lot of the same problems. I've worked in the film industry for over a decade, but we've been hit hard (high dollar compared to the US, funding sources drying up). Vancouver's also been a big town for video game production since the mid-90s, but most of the big companies have folded in the last few years. It's a challenging time, for sure.
I would never "officially" endorse pirated software of course... Also I think Maya has a free student version...?

I got laid off in 2008. Been bouncing from one crummy retail job to another.
Heh. I know how to get a hold of cheap *and* legal software. I remember trying to work with an early version of Maya. Even the teacher didn't know what he was doing. XD Maybe I'd have better luck with it now?
IDK. You can see my gallery from here. Most of that stuff is old as dirt. Should I even bother?

Maya is one of only two programs to repeatedly kick my ass. I can learn almost any software pretty quickly, but every time I tried to learn Maya it was a real slog, and I kind of failed... but then, I'm not an animator. As I think about it, I believe most of the animators I know are in the game industry, and they use 3DSMax.
I'd be a fool to give advice to anyone I didn't know, based solely on a few samples posted on the internet. All I can say is if you truly love it, find a way to do it, whatever it takes. If you don't love it enough to put up with an awful lot of poverty, failure, frustration, and rare (and all too brief) rewards, then maybe it's not the career for you, and there's something else that will make you happier. That's really what it boils down to - Do what makes you HAPPY. The downside of my success was I stopped ever drawing for ME. I rarely do it now, and I kind of 'commercialized' myself out of what was once my greatest joy. There's something to be said for having some of your favourite passtimes remain hobbies ; )
But on the flipside, if you really truly love it, if you can't face the idea of living another day not doing that thing that you love... then DO IT. No excuses, don't take no for an answer, throw yourself into it and give it everything you have to give. Odds are you'll make it. And even if you don't, you'll KNOW that you left no stone unturned, you gave it your absolute best, which is all any of us can do.
That was long : P I hope some of that is in some way usefull!

LOL Well I feel a bit better about Maya now. XD I remember cursing Flash 3 a lot too. /geezer
IDK. I'm good but I'm not THAT good, as the saying goes. I've gotten so out of practice. Most of my creativity goes into Not Killing anyone whilst at my crummy retail job.
I think I'm probably a better fan at this point. Maybe I'll get lucky some day, after the Economy stops sucking the life out of everything (and probably after I turn 70 but yeah).
That's ok. I appreciate the long. ^^ Art- no matter what form- tends to be an absurdly hard row to hoe (and I have hoed rows- no, really, I have- and it is NOT EASY). It also doesn't help when you have ZERO support and your passion is trivialized as something silly.
Maybe I can come back to it as some point. Hope so.

Yeah, it certainly ain't the easiest career in the world... but then, neither is retail (must... not... kill... customers...!). But don't ever let anyone tell you you can't do it, even if just for yourself. It's not silly. Even if it's not a career, it's still one of the most rewarding hobbies there is, so if you love DOING it, then find the time and enjoy it.
As an aside, remember how I said Maya was one of the only two programs to ever kick my ass? Flash was the other one

LOL Yes. It's a good thing I'm not a Jedi. There would be choking people lying on the floor all over the place.
XDDD
Again, something I wish I'd known at the time. I haven't touched Flash (and wouldn't with a 39.5ft pole) in eons. I remember wanted to take an Ikea store to it because HOLY CARP did it need organized in the WORST WAY.

Yow, so true. I'm sure some programmer thought he was being supremely clever - "The interface is running using the same code as the things you use it to make! The snake eats it's own tail! The inside is the outside! It's so Meta! I'm a GENIUS!"
