Adding the brand name made the picture legendary - at least for me...

Heh. Glad you enjoyed it! It was a lot easier to do stuff like that, back in the 90s...

Clever composition. I like how you designed the gun, too.

Well, it seemed like a trust-worthy brand at the time

sony is a mythical corporation in shadowrun that has nothing to do with the real world ...unless they really do have a dragon on the board of directors? oh nooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

You hadnΒ΄t?!
...awful.....in German law enviroment i would advise a lawyer for that....
xD the Sony brand - i always wondered how FASA/Fanpro get theΒ permission to use existibg brands, not even for guns.

Well... no, we never got permission to use existing brand names in our drawings... but you can see the same thing in comics back in the 80s and 90s, too. Companies never bothered to sue anyone for that back then, so we were a lot more free.

Whereas by the mid-2000s, I was working on a WWII video game where they changed all the US military hardware... because the legal department was afraid they'd get sued by Colt and Jeep. Ridiculous.

Yes, was a lot easier i know....i mean, i understand the companys, not shure how good this association with RPGΒ΄s or computer games will be on the cassualΒ customers, but it has become a very paranoic scale. On the other hand - i remember Battletech hasnΒ΄t mind to much also an so came to the point where they stole complete designs from a Manga series.

Hah, on some early CounterStrike-games, the names of guns must changed to not be more "bad" as other guns - so stupid xD

Such a good idea for gunfights. I love how a lot of the Shadowrun chrome was eminently practical.

Yeah, some good sci-fi design work there... and of course tons of fun to draw.

A very beautiful and wonderful picture! I love the Sony brandname on the gyrostabilizer as well!

Heh. These days a legal department would feed me to the fishes for doing something like that, but back in the day it was pretty standard in comics and illustration to use real world brandnames...

Luckily, they are not as afraid to use them in text. Current-gen Shadowrun books still mention Sony products from time to time.

Cool. I really appreciate the realism that brings to a game.

Never got why: it's basically a free ad for them!

SteamPoweredMikeJ In reply to danvolodar [2013-04-28 04:52:41 +0000 UTC]

I agree... but the lawyers and the paranoid execs start double-guessing whether they want their brands 'associated' with the drawing, or the concept of the drawing, or the political stance of the publishers of the book containing the drawing, or whatever. Easier just to say no to everything : P
