Description

Spite-class destroyer

The Spite-class destroyer came about as a result of the "New Doctrine", a school of thought which placed an emphasis on high-speed, heavily armed torpedo craft to defeat navies with superior numbers of battleships and heavy surface combatants.  While the "New Doctrine" eventually succumbed to the notion that any enemy subject to such tactics would quickly adapt with heavier secondary batteries, the design that would ultimately become Spite carried on.  Adapted to be useful in multiple roles, the Spite-class retains its originally intended main armament of two triple-mounted UO-172 720mm heavy torpedoes, as well as a quartet of twin-mounted 150mm dual-purpose guns for general anti-surface and long-range anti-air use, while a pair of depth charge rails allows it some anti-submarine capability.
