You have been very helpful, I've been trying to rewire my way of thinking (or approaching stuff) and your comics have been very helpful, I even got a genius idea from this one that may of may not result in a journal featuring you, among other artists (That's if I don't allow this plan to fall through like I've done with many others.) Wish me luck!

Jeez, you've explained the way I've been learning to draw for a few years now! I always felt sort of bad when I "stole" aspects of other art I liked because I always got the impression that great artists just came up with stuff on their own without the assistance of anything, but reading this essay has helped me understand that learning from other artists is just as valid as looking directly nature. I also noticed that I often find myself in the naturalist or scientist mode and that I'm probably going to try to remix a little more than usual.

So that's what Picasso meant by that quote. My art history class and I was confused by what he meant, haha. Thanks for the clarification in your own words.
I always say "Practice makes better" because perfect is impossible to reach plus it seem like you are stopping when you achieved 'perfect'. All artists no matter what is still growing into one whether it's beginner or a professional.

Also, I just read the other linked comics, and they have a lot of good advice. Just the kind I needed to hear. ^_^

Very deep and very inspiring! Among the visual aids provided by this little comic, I especially liked the one at the end with the beautiful but rigid crystals versus the growing, thriving tree. Nicely done! ^_^

This remember "Deliberate practice". Have you heard of Cal Newport? calnewport.com/blog/2010/01/06…

Great article-- I have heard about deliberate practice-- I've been trying to implement it in my life-- so it's encouraging to hear how important it is!

Hadn't been able to browse through your comics for a while. It's a pleasure to reconnect with your teaching and advices As a hobbyist illustrator but passioned and dedicated musician and writer (I guess I can't call myself a pro yet) , I can tell your advices apply to all forms of arts and not only to illustration/cartoons/painting... And that's what I find so great about them

It's like you took a peek inside my head and then posted this. Exactly what I'm having to work out to get better at drawing and at with MMD. I'm still in the scientist phase at the moment, but eventually it will pass on to the DJ phase ^^

I really love your take on how proper imitation should work! I've only discovered that when I was shifting my style to a different direction,
looking at different artworks, breaking it down and try to see the one thing that makes me like it so much (ie. the color, the motion, the atmosphere etc).
I love taking bits and pieces of it and just try to apply them in my work just to see if it works. it's only then that I actually felt I was growing as an artist (and was immensely motivated).
then realized I always felt stagnant and lost back then when I didn't expose myself to other artists and various styles.
