This is a collage I made of clowns: part 3. John Wayne Gacy's Pogo the Clown from 1975-1978. Brett Leonard's Jumbo from Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988). Jack Nicholson's Joker from Batman (1989). Prince's Gemini from "Batdance" and "Partyman" (1989). Tim Curry's Pennywise from It (1990). Doug Jones' Thin Clown in the Red Triangle Circus Gang from Batman Returns (1992).

A lot of people have a fear of clowns. These clowns were the emergence of the evil killer clowns becoming popularized into pop culture. The fear of clowns is a real phobia called coulrophobia.

Tim Burton explained, "Why a fascination with clowns? Why do I like clowns so much? Why are they so powerful to children? Probably because they are dangerous. That kind of danger is really what it’s all about. It’s that kind of stuff that I think gets you through life. Those are the only things worth expressing, in some ways: danger and presenting subversive subject matter in a fun way."

The Wisconsin State Journal [December 29th 1978] newspaper features an article by United Press International called "Killer as Clown... John Wayne Gacy Jr. poses in clown costume at his home in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1976. He told photographer Martin Zielinski it was for publicity. Authorities are continuing the search of his property where remains of 21 bodies have been found. (Related story on Page 11.)"

Serial killer John Wayne Gacy is the most famous killer clown with the highest body count and the only one that most people have ever heard of. John Wayne Gacy was executed in 1994. Good riddance.

The Tampa Times [November 29th 1979] newspaper features an article by Times Wire Reports called "Clown called Killer... Oceanside, California. The grandson of the famous clown Emmet Kelly was being held today in the brutal slayings of two men. Paul Anthony Kelly, 22 [years-old], a circus clown who performed on the high wire despite having an artificial leg, faced arraignment today on charges he killed Los Angeles antique dealer Brent David Bailey, 22 [years-old], and retired minister Henry B. Kuisenga, 66 [years-old]."

I never heard that famous clown Emmet Kelly's grandson is a killer clown until I read that searching clowns in those vintage newspapers.

The Press and Sun-Bulletin [May 23rd 1981] newspaper features an article by the Associated Press called "Police seek 'Killer Clown'... Kansas City, Missouri. Scores of reports from children saying they were threatened by a knife-wielding man wearing a clown suit have police in two states looking for the so-called 'Killer Clown,' authorities said yesterday. Although many children at six Kansas City schools had reported seeing the clown driving a yellow van since Monday, police said no adults had reported seeing him until yesterday. The menacing figure was dubbed 'Killer Clown' in a memo distributed Tuesday by a nun at Our Lady and St. Rose School."

It looks like that mysterious knife-wielding clown in the creepy yellow van was never caught and was either an actual attempted child killer clown or he might have been a teenage jackass playing scary clown pranks on little schoolyard children or it might have been just exaggerated schoolyard gossip into a rumored legend.

The Lincoln Star [August 5th 1989] newspaper features an article by the Associated Press called "Bank robber's makeup talents tribute to Joker... Orlando, Florida. A bank robbery suspect says he started out trying to disguise himself as a woman, but the more makeup he put on, the more he looked like the Joker in the film Batman. Richard Hensarling Jr., 25 [years-old], of Deltona was arrested in the robberies of four central Florida banks after he tried to pass dyed money. In a telephone interview from the Volusia County Jail, he described for the Orlando Sentinel how he came to look something like the movie crook. 'Once I looked at myself in the mirror after I had the white stuff on, I said, 'Wow, you look like the Joker,' so I painted the lips up a little.' He stuffed his cheeks with toilet paper to enhance the Joker effect."

The Palm Beach Post [May 27th 1990] newspaper features an article by Ron Kozlowski called "Clown shoots woman in Wellington - Suspect delivering flowers opens fire... Wellington [Florida] - A clown bearing flowers and balloons shot a woman [Marlene Warren] in the face Saturday morning when she opened her front door. The clown, described as wearing a Bozo costume, with red hair, an orange nose and white gloves... sped out of the exclusive Aero Club development in a white Chrysler LeBaron without a license plate. Police didn't know whether the attacker was a man or a woman. Warren was the apparent target, although her son and some friends were home and saw the shooting about 11 a.m. Warren opened the door and took the flowers and balloons without saying anything. As soon as she reached out and grabbed it, he or she pulled out a revolver and shot her once in the face."

That killer clown was revealed to be a woman named Sheila Keen and was caught.
