ETA April 2009:I know it's a million years later but I updated this with a non-shit photograph so I could make prints and show it a bit bigger.
I'm not as fond of this piece as I used to be, but I do think it's really a big stepping stone of my artistic career, and I know so many people liked it :' ) Thank you all for your lovely comments.
hey, it's more schoolwork! and a lame title to boot!
this was my drawing II final~ we got to do whatever we wanted, so i opted for some nice tasty watercolor illustration.
i got inspired to do this concept (and it took me such a long time to get an idea, i was very frustrated) because a cardinal sideswiped my head. i love cardinals but damn.
i used myself as a reference for the sketch, which was done at 3 am the night before it was due (what did i tell you? frustration!)
mixed media~ dumpster cardboard (yay), watercolor, old tea, graphite and collage.

no birdies were hurt in the making of this art. just my eye, as i squinted into the compact mirror in a dimly lit room.

I LOVE the bright colours, especially the red bird, and the hand is pretty amazing too!
I've never been happy using watercolours.. I was too inpatient and made absolutely all the colours run, so I would end up with a sludgy slodge on soggy paper. I think you've like inspired me to experiment with water colours.
This is SO being favourite-ed..!

Watercolor is hard, and I've learned a lot since doing this piece, but it's so fun! I really encourage you to do it. Try not to get the paper too wet, but don't be discouraged if the colors run! That's half the fun of watercolor, is its unpredictability. You can only control it to a certain extent.

Your cardinal is very nice. I've always been a fan of textures in work, and the splatter of the watercolor on the wings are very nice.

the textures are kind of hard to see, it's woven paper strips with German written on them. C; the paint kind of washed over it but it sinks into the little holes between the strips and makes an awesome texture.

that paper sounds so interesting
does it have good absorbtion? is it tough on multiple washes of watermedia?
did you use old tea as base? i used to make do with coffee

hehe it was cardstock, pretty thick, so it held up well under all those washes.
and yeah, it was tea. i've used coffee before too. they're fun to use

yosh-yosh, my favorite still though is food coloring. the bleeding is just too sexy for me XD
i miss doin traditional art... i've been so out-of-practice +no inspiration

That red one is kinda strange, heh.. Cna't see his nib. Does that red one have a face O.o?

yes he does- see the black? those are his facial markings. he's a north american cardinal, so their faces are slightly different than normal birds. the orange of his beak is hard to see too, the image is smaller than i would have liked it to be.

I love the concept of this. o_o and the TEA splash thing wth. everytime I try that the fucking paper crumples up and tears and we ALL know how frusterating that can be. ; ;

yeah, tea is kind of a pain to use with thin paper. ;/
and it's not archival so in about 30 years that cardboard is going to rot. : D
