Description Two spaceships make a close flyby of a very large structure of unknown origin...

This is a revised, alternate version of "Express Delivery" [link]

There were some things about the earlier image that I was dissatisfied with, so I more or less started over using the basic shapes and silhouettes created the first time around

Whoah. Very cool. Did you have a particular concept or inspiration in mind as you were doing this piece?

Is there a name or tutorial for this technique? Because I absolutely love the way it looks and it seems like it allows fairly quick results.

I'm not sure if it has a name. But the use of the custom shapes tool is how I get the crisp appearance of the various areas of color. I'm not sure if there's a tutorial on it or not, but I found it immediately useful once I started experimenting with it! The process for making custom shapes is very similar to making a custom brush, except the "shape" is a vector (a path)so it is high contrast and resolution-independent. Any selection can be turned into a custom shape just as it can be made into a brush - but I usually use the threshold adjustment first to preview how the contrast will finally appear.

Totally dig that ship design, good one!

Can we get deck plans for that ship?

This is probably one of my favorite of your ship designs.

Yes , now this one works, very good how you've got the warm colours on the blue, it really looks in motion.

I must say the added colour of the craft does make the image seem a little "cleaner" the foreground craft being a different colour to the huge backdrop derelict adds a little more depth. (if that makes any sense)

steve-burg In reply to karanua [2012-02-20 04:17:55 +0000 UTC]

It does make sense
I wish I had the nerve to just "go for it" with a high saturation paint-job like Chris Foss did. I always pull things back a bit. Ah well, one of these days...

The shape of the ship seems to read much better with the warmer saturation.

Looks way better, glad you got rid of the starburst effect on the engines

The basic shape of the ship looks really nice, the way the front connects to the back is a little hard to make out, but then this is just a concept. Really like the new colours as well

Of course you were dissatisfied with the last one. This one has more detail and is more fascinating.

**The two spaceships are very well done. But if I were you,Iยดd put the structure more distant,to show better as large it is,if are damaged or not, those things.

A blue light! Madness!!! You've gone off the edge, Steve!!!

Nothin' says "utility craft" like warning stripes and coloration creeping towards Cat yellow

You're cranking 'em out! Like the bronze/copper hue of this one a bit better as well as the added inner details...and cool propulsion blast effect or whatever it's called in this universe.
