Description I still can't titles \o/
So yeah, all the comments and critiques on the last one really motivated me to draw this instead of replying to comments which I actually wanted to do but I guess it was worth it ovo
Another one of these explorer Pokémon, I love making them so there'll probably several more This one here took longer tho with 3 and a half hours cause I'm slow at painting stuff in ;o;
Tried to do some things better and I wanted to draw it differently too, would've been boring to just do the same again.
Oh and to the hair: I know that Bulbasaurs and Ivysaurs don't have hair but I wanted to make it look a bit more unique and cute, I also like drawing some floof so I put it there I was honestly surprised by how many people pointed that out and I found that funny cause while drawing it I didn't think that it is such a drastic change from the design that people will point it out xD
And I don't mind it, don't worry. Was just interesting to see ovo

I guess I'll go through all my notifications tomorrow, sorry for being a bit slow with them again but I really wanted to draw this ^^

Oh and here is the version before I painted over it, I like how it looks too so imma share it here:

Credits:

Reference I used: vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/p…

Pokémon, Ivysaur and the Mystery Dungeon series belong to Nintendo , GameFreak, The Pokémon Company and Spike Chunsoft

This artwork was made using Painttool Sai

Used another one of Honrupis render brushes for the actual painting and grass and a watercolor brush for the base shading

It's like nearly 4am aaaaaah I need sleep ;o;

I have to say, this is very well drawn. The art style is great, and the shading is very well placed. Although, some parts of the drawing don't match the character its self. Like the leaves on the tail thing, or the 'hair' on the head. It's very well drawn though and it is truly amazing. The grass is a nice feature, and truly makes the drawing stand out. The art style really matches the character. Even the markings match the character. This is a true amazing drawing of Ivysaur from Pokemon! Keep up the good work. It is good

I like this version better than the bulbasaur you previously did, but their are also a few more problems with this one. The outlining that you did seems to be way too thick, and personally it just looks like you're trying to fill up space. That hurst the vision rating critically. You did better with the eyes and color this time, so nice job, but the bandana is a little, circular? It hangs way too much. It's very nice overall, but I recommend adding more terrain to make it look like he's not sitting on a very small island. Or windmill, if you get the feel good inc song reference. Like I said before, the color is better than your previous one, so a little more to improve on, but I don't work in digital art. So very nice.

I think it looks like that because it's supposed to be a stamp. The thick white outline, the cut-off terrain, those are both qualities that a stamp would possess. As for the bandanna, I personally see nothing wrong with it, but that's just my view.

That's just the way I see it. The line could be a little thinner and, well the bandana is supposed to be triangular in the front

True, but what if the bandanna isn't really a bandanna... o.o

I really love how the green patches stick out as if they were scales. There was a lot of detail in this! The shading of the grass is really good too. I also like how you make Ivysaur look shiny in some areas, while there was a dullness in the darker regions. It really gives this 2d piece a more 3d look. The flower and leaves on its back are also pretty detailed. The only thing missing that i noticed would be the ear on the left on the picture, where you can't see the green. It makes it looks like that ear is backwards that way. Other than that, It's perfect! Some areas may be a little bit blurred, like the larger patch on his forehead, but I'd say those details are hardly noticeable can be easily fixed. This time, in the eyes, it's darker in the centers of both eyes, giving the illusion of depth. I absolutely love this piece, and I'm looking forward to seeing even more of your cool art! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" data-embed-type="emoticon" data-embed-id="366" title=" (Big Grin)"/>

Yeah, I usually take the sketch, color and shade it and then make a new layer to paint over it or paint directly on the sketchlayer then
The sketchlayer for this one here looks like this:

Oh ok :3
I'll have to aks you a few things first tho: How do you shade so far and what do you know about shading in general? ovo
So that I kinda get a feel for what you know and what you still need to learn ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Xael-The-Artist In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-03-27 00:07:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, mostly like one layer at multiply (normaly i put it on 37%) with color depending of the background (  here i use an intense red for the normal background because of the sun and time of the day, and it the gradient background i used an intense blue), and in comissions liek this   i use the same technique, but i use more layer with spray-like brush settings to do more "realistic" or "better" shadings, and i discovered the garussian blur in photoshop so that helps me a lot on shading sometimes XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steve-does-art In reply to Xael-The-Artist [2017-03-27 00:11:18 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok, nice ovo
You actually use cold colors like blue for shading when the lightsource is the sun and warm colors for highlights, like red When it is indoors it is the other way around with cold colors for highlights and warm for shadows tho you don't have to do it like that of course, it's just a kinda loose rule o3o

Oh and you use Photosho? ovo

Also, is there like any artwork that I made where you want to know specifically how I shaded it or just tips in general?

Ok so which artworks would you want to know more about? Am just asking them cause that will be the ones I'll use as examples then ovo
I'm not that good at explaining stuff which is why I often use visuals instead, which is a better method to get that stuff across in my opinion anyways ^^

Xael-The-Artist In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-03-27 01:18:55 +0000 UTC]

I would say of these three ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steve-does-art In reply to Xael-The-Artist [2017-03-27 21:22:08 +0000 UTC]

Ok ^^
So let me start with the first one, that one is quite simple, for the most part I just used 3 different layers for the shading
Here is the unshaded version:   then I shade it with a shade layer and blue on 80% opacity:   < here is how that layer looks like
I go really really rough first with a big brush and then refine it in som areas but I personally like it to kinda shade big areas and cover everything with either shadows or highlights so that there are not many areas where the color is just the base color, you don't have to do it like that and it really just depends on personal taste but it's what is the most fun to me and I guess more realistic too? After shading it I put in the hightlights which looks like this here then: which pretty much works the same than the shading layer but I use a luminosity layer instead and on 80% opacity too, the actual layer looks like this:   there you can really see how big I had the brush at first with the huge strokes on the left side and then I reduced the size to put in more details ^^
Also a good trick is to erase with the actual brush itself, in painttool sai for example there is this little icon which looks like this (i have to resort to discordimage links now cause dA only lets me use 5 st.ash thumbnails here ;v cdn.discordapp.com/attachments… which lets you erase with the brush which you can use to blend things in more nicely and have the texture of the brush on the whole area you use it :3
It can also create some cool looking effects depending on the brush, for example with the marker you can make stuff like this here then: The little explorer by Steve-the-Lucario
And I actually have a recording that I cut together of how I made that here: orig05.deviantart.net/1f50/f/2…

And well yeah, the last thing that is missing on this artwork is the backlight which also works the same ovo
Layer itself looks like this: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments… used a light blue and luminosity on 60% opacity, same brush for all the different shading layers btw. and that looks like the final artwork then if you ignore the eyeshine which I have on a seperate layer
A neat little trick is to not make the eyeshine white, I for example used a luminosity layer on 100% and used this pink color here: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments… which looks like this in the actual layer then: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments…

I'll explain to you how I made the other two in the next comment then cause there is only so many words I can put in here and only so many thumbnails You can already aske me questions to this one here that way tho so I can already explain these then with the next example :3
I hope it already helped you so far!

Xael-The-Artist In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-03-29 06:02:07 +0000 UTC]

Hmm, the bad thing is that the luminosity style layer maybe it doesn't work like in SAI, actually it just show it white, also, i'm still trying to figure it out at all, but i feel a little frustated when i actually try and it doesn't come out as i wish to, specially on backgrounds, also some layer doesn't have the same name so it might be kinda confusing.

Explain the other two XD

Steve-does-art In reply to Xael-The-Artist [2017-04-05 20:29:03 +0000 UTC]

Oh when I export a sai file to psd it changes the shade layer into a "Linear Burn" one and the luminosity one into a "Linear Dodge (Add)" one but it looks a bit different than in sai I know what you mean, don't get demotivated because of that, not everything we make is a masterpiece and it takes a lot of good to bad drawings before we make one, so be patient and don't worry too much :3

The Ivysaur is pretty much the same than the Lucario one with the difference that I then painted over it, here is how it looked like before that which the only difference is that I used an watercolor brush for the shading and highlighting instead of a more rough brush like with the Lucario one:
Usually I make a layer over it to paint over the actual kinda "sketch" like this one here but in this case I merged the layers and just kinda painted it in by going over it with a rough render / blur brush on the same layer ovo
And then I added some color adjustment and effect layers on top which are these ones here:   They are to adjust the shadows and highlight a tad bit, change the colors slightly and for the eye shine and a bit of a reflection too ^^

Like I said, usually I do that on a new layer like with this eevee here:
Where the sketch looks like this:
I also made a layer there where I just slightly crossed over some colors from bodyparts or parts of the background near to other parts on the eevee with a light waterbrush as you can see it on the neckfloof where there is some brown from the face ovo
Then I added a ton of overlay layers to make the colors more fancy and kinda split some color transitions up to creat some neat patterns which looks like this:
These here where the layers used for it, the ones that are completely colored are the ones I used to change the colors: Eevee Overlay Layers by Steve-the-Lucario
And as I said I then painted over it on a new layer ( I did it seperately for the eevee and the background to be able to create the effect of it kinda coming out of the canvas more easily but usually people do it on the same layer as far as I know): Eevee Render Layer by Steve-the-Lucario
It also shows that I painted over the background in that layer too in some parts to fix up the edges of the eevee in some parts since the lineart / sketch is visibly in the sketch which is basically just one layer and I painted over the lines then too o3o

And yeah, I'll explain the one I made for Zander next then and sorry for the very late reply ;o;
I hope this helped you and as with last time, just ask me whatever questions you have if any new ones came up :3
