Description So it was Mewtwo's birthday like a week ago or so and I am totally late but I guess better late than never, huh? ovo
Speaking of late, I am also late with this weeks art prompt so rip me twice

And woah, last time I drew something with a outline was nearly two months ago Not completely happy with it cause it doesn't quite fit to the background but I guess it kinda works?

Credits:

Pokémon and Mewtwo belongs to Nintendo , GameFreak, The Pokémon Company and Creatures

This artwork was made using Painttool Sai

I will never get better at thinking of names for artworks ;w;

*EDIT: Cleaned up the shading a bit, redid the lines around the mountains and added a bit more light
Thanks a lot for the critiques of , and !

Thanks a lot for the critique and all the compliments!

I see what you mean with the light in the background and I redrew them, I hope that it is better now :3
And don't worry, it doesn't sound mean at all!
Constructive criticism is always appreciated and hearing about everything that seems wrong or off helps me to improve and fix these mistakes so thanks a lot for this ^^

And also sorry for the very late reply 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

What better way to celebrate Mewtwo's birthday than with an artwork? I believe that the artwork you produced clearly recognises Mewtwo's strength as a Pokemon and how far it has come since the day of its creation.

Your strong use of purple denotes the presence of power, and through being placed in the sky, Mewtwo's authority is really highlighted. A symbol of overcoming its adversity of birth, a milestone if you will, is what I can interpret from this artwork.

The lines around Mewtwo help it to stand out, otherwise it would blend in with the background and wouldn't be seen as well. An interesting use of blue back light! Quite ambitious since there appears to be no source of blue lighting, but it gives of a sense of tranquillity within the artwork. For Mewtwo's right forearm, the back lighting should be toned down as it is more intense to Mewtwo's left.

The shading could use some cleaning up as the lines are rather wobbly, but I find myself struggling with this at times as well. I can not tell whether the white on the mountains is snow or light, but it appears to be coming out of the mountain itself.

All in all, I really enjoyed this piece of work! The colours are very rich, and I really do get a sense of power and overcoming adversity - two things Mewtwo is really capable of! Well done!

Thanks a lot for all the compliments and the critique!

Hearing your interpretation of this artwork is really interesting and thanks a lot for writing this!
The kinda weird thing about it is that I didn't really plan anything about it, it just kinda came together and it is really awesome to hear that it worked out in a way that it resembles what I wanted it to push towards somewhere on the way while drawing it :3

I tried to fix the issue with the backlight on mewtwo's forarm and toned it down a bit and also touched up the shading a bit, I kinda see what you mean with the mountains but haven't really found a way to fix that so far :/

So yeah, thanks a lot for all the compliments and giving me advise and also sorry for the very late reply! 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

No worries! I really love your drawings a LOT and I'm glad to have helped a little! The mountains look great now! Soft shading in the background is hard to do, but you really used the feedback really well!

This looks really nice! I like how you've added the glow on Mewtwo, almost like it's sunrise or sunset, and I like how Mewtwo harmonizes with the background! But maybe you could add more of a glow in the background to match how you've lit Mewtwo, like by adding more light on the mist and the mountains? Only if you want to though of course, this is already amazing!

Steve-does-art In reply to DelTa-DRagon7997 [2017-03-03 01:10:47 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot for the compliments and also the feedback!
I tried to make the background a bit brighter around the areas you described, I hope that it is better now :3
Might be a bit too much tho, just tell me if I should tone it down a bit and I'll do it ^^

And also sorry for the very late reply 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

np! X3
I think it matches the glow on Mewtwo a little more now, so I think it looks good! But it's your decision if you want to change it aaaa I feel bad adufhfhbgvuh XD I'm not used to critiquing haha
Also don't worry about it, my replies are late too! XD

Cl4usy [2017-02-12 03:31:57 +0000 UTC]

Dude this looks awesome ! And the background seems fitting as well (probably because in the movie mewtwo strikes back the events took place in that mountain place ). maybe someday you'll find a way to come up with good name for art (although I think the names are fine)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steve-does-art In reply to Cl4usy [2017-02-14 03:06:35 +0000 UTC]

Thanks :3
Oh right, I totally forgot about that xD
The background kinda came together by randomly throwing colors with some different brushes at the canvas and then just refining a few things, guess I got lucky and made something that actually makes sense xD

Well sometimes it works, I guess it kinda did in this case too but it took me about half an hour 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Cl4usy In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-02-15 03:04:51 +0000 UTC]

Lol (aside from the time it took) what pretty lucky coincidence!

it looks really cool. i like how you rendered the background.

the proportions are a bit off particularly in the hips and arms.

Steve-does-art In reply to BlueKnightGirl [2017-02-14 03:00:56 +0000 UTC]

Thanks :3

Yeah, I guess so :/
I actually had it different in the sketch but a few people told me to make the hips bigger, it orignally looked like this:
(sorry for the bad quality of this thing, I didn't save that version of the sketch so I had to pull this out of the recording
Sadly can't really change it now

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueKnightGirl In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-02-14 05:25:57 +0000 UTC]

mewtwo's screwy proportions don't exactly help. like looking at a giant purple bowling pin: tiny up top, skinny in the middle, heavy on the bottom

idk, bit late in the game to be talking proportions.

i still like the coloring and the background. helps bring up some of the nostalgia of the first move

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steve-does-art In reply to BlueKnightGirl [2017-03-04 04:31:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, some of the Pokémon have a bit weird proportions and you often have to kinda find your own way of drawing them

Oh it's ok, even when it was too late for this artwork it will still help me with the next one so thanks! :3

And also thanks for the compliments! ^^

this conversation actually inspired me to do my own. idk... talking about mew two's proportions for so long made me want to draw them myself. i linked your picture in the description. if you're upset about the picture in any way i will gladly take it down

Oh yeah I know what you mean, i find that kinda weird honestly cause personally I'd be even very happy when someone would redraw one of my artworks ovo
I don't mind that at all cause in a way I inspired them and that is really awesome!

And how could I be upset, the artwork you made just looks so fantastic! Way better than the one I made :3
Btw. what program do you use? I'd guess something like photoshop or clipstudio paint ovo

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueKnightGirl In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-03-05 16:33:32 +0000 UTC]

Adobe Photoshop CS5. it's a bit out of date, but it is medium i know best.

Steve-does-art In reply to BlueKnightGirl [2017-03-05 23:48:02 +0000 UTC]

Oh cool, I have Adobe Photoshop CC 2017 but I still have to get into it and the last time I tried it it kinda lagged out every now and then when using the colorpicker which bothered me a lot Tho I tried it earlier today due to your comment and it worked fine ovo
I guess imma try to do a workshop thingy like the website ctrlpaint has to get into it cause photoshop is a bit more complex than painttool sai which I mostly use Tho I'd love to get it down cause you can create some amazing stuff with it and with sai you are a bit limited at times

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueKnightGirl In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-03-06 00:36:01 +0000 UTC]

i don't really use the the color picker. i prefer to mix colors using photoshop swatches and the bucket tool till i get color i want. then use the screen (highlights) and multiply (shadows) filters on the brush tool

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steve-does-art In reply to BlueKnightGirl [2017-03-07 15:37:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok, I thought you directly painted on the basecolor layer cause that is what your style looked like to me
Thanks for telling me, I'll have to try that too at some point cause I usually only do that for stuff with lineart or as a base to paint over ^^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueKnightGirl In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-03-07 19:46:02 +0000 UTC]

no, i tend to work with a whole bunch of layers. everything is on a different layer. i usually don't touch the base layer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steve-does-art In reply to BlueKnightGirl [2017-03-10 18:14:33 +0000 UTC]

Oh ok, I sometimes do that too but I guess I should experiment a bit more with that stuff cause recently I've mostly used multiple layers on luminosity, screen, shading and multiply, then merged it all and paint over it.
Recently learned that you don't really have to do that to achieve this kinda pastel or oilpainting look and I for some reason thought that for quite a while.

I should really experiment more 👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BlueKnightGirl In reply to Steve-does-art [2017-03-11 04:04:52 +0000 UTC]

yeah, experimentation can really help any artist's work. my own style wouldn't where it's at today if i didn't get bored at a school seminal. i got stuck listening to an acrylic artist go on about his work for three hours and knew he was just going to keep talking for another six. eventually i got tired of listening and wondered i could accomplish the same look in photoshop. i pulled out my sketch book and eventually turned it into this piece:

 blueknightgirl.deviantart.com/…

after that everything just kinda clicked. my work improved from being flat and somewhat lifeless to something similar to paint

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Steve-does-art In reply to BlueKnightGirl [2017-03-12 18:15:25 +0000 UTC]

Indeed, I always say that it's one of the most important things but personally didn't experiment as much as I used to lately, I should really get back to doing that cause it is what helped me the most.
Oh that's interesting, I've never really seen anyone paint something besides digital stuff as speedpaints and such on youtube and some Bob Ross episodes, I guess it would be a good idea to look at some videos of people actually painting a traditional artwork cause you can probably learn a lot from that even for digital art.
Looks really great! :3

Oh I know what you mean, it takes some experimenting and trial and error in the beginning but once you understand how it works it gets easier
