Description Despite no surly monster, no half-nekkid sci-fi vixen, and no Doctor Who meets Cthulhu mash-up, I like this painting.  It's just a regular day on Tatooine, nothing blowing up, no shootout.  Which you really don't see that often.

Jim Gurney told me that the key to lovable and believable worlds, is to show that the most fantastic things in your universe are everyday and boring to it's inhabitants.  Show their regular life alongside the wild adventure.  Y'know, for contrast.  Yeah, it's the Millenium Falcon.  Yeah, it's a droid fully capable of building and repairing spacecraft.  So what?  Their just gassing up.  This is everyday ho-hum for the crew of the Falcon.

I like the little droid too.  I think I'll name him Clanky Coppershoe.  He's working his way through a theater degree, and hopes to one day star in his own one-man broadway show "The Sultry Affairs of Rustina the Pleasurebot Double-Agent."

For Star Wars: Scum and Villainy.  Copyright *sigh* practially everyone: Wizard's of the Coast, Lucasfilm, Disney... etc ad nausem.

Fun Fact: The Millenium Falcon, due to it's many upgrades, requires fuel that is at least 93PPM unicorn tears.

I totally hear you. I have been eatching old scifi movies and today's simultaneously just to compare and find out what's missing in recent ones. Instead of solid storytelling and composition in scenes, its a hassle of explosions, flares and mindless conversations.. Its the same with what most clients ask me to do in illustrations, they want every inch of the illustration to be filled with action ( they love to call it " eye catching" or "dynamic" ) . I think the reason might be to be able to compensate the lack of a solid story.

And with these thoughts buggering me for a couple of months, your illustration made me fall in love with it.

Thanks!

I felt the same way about movies.  Always moving toward bigger explosions, more action, all the CG all the time, visual binge-fests.  But I'm not that irritated by it anymore.  Because the lack of storytelling in movies made room for television to be taken seriously as a medium.  So now we have movies that are the narrative equivalent of a deep-fried twinkie, but we have television series that can take the time to develop the characters, and tell the story right.  With a pacing that's more like a novel than a summary.

Now I basically feel like television series are meals, movies are desserts.

Gosh, really splendid. Reminds me of old masterworks I was gaping at in 1976 when Star Wars was presented in magazines

Those poor unicorns.  I know their tears are precious, but subjecting them to watch episodes of MLP on a daily basis is worse than anything the Geneva Convention frowns upon.
