Description It's a rare thing these days that I have time to do personal pieces. While this one was not completely free-reign, and still needed to fall under the assignment guidelines for this years Illustration Master Class, there was still much room to interpret. "Dragon(s) and people" was the gist of it. Pretty wide open.

I thought to myself "I'm going to do something new. Something outside of convention. Something creative, with a timelessness, a mystery. Something that makes people ask questions."

So, I thought up this elaborate mythology, around an ancient, super-high-tech dragon, perhaps left for centuries by a civilization only known through artifacts such as this. Perhaps a living thing, merely in a long slumber. The current peoples revere it as a god, or at least a guardian, frozen in time, that will spring back to life in a time of need.

Pilgrimages are made. It is prayed to, studied, and protected. Religion centers around the enigma of the metallic deity.

And I was sooooooo proud of my ultimate creativity. Until, while Don Dos Santos was talking about his influences, he mentioned that for him it all started with cartoons from the '80s. Then I realized: In my stroke of genius, I'd reinvented "Voltron."

Sigh.

Anyway, now I just need to find a rag-tag group of misfits to protect folks from space monsters.

For the Illustration Master Class 2011. Copyright me.

Rope bridges by "Rickety Pete's Hemp Emporium." Voltron copyright... I dunno. Probably Hasbro. I think they own all childhood memories.

Here's an alternative take:Β
The dragon was designed to fulfill a supervisor/security role in the ancient society that built him/her.But then the ancients started poking around Things That Were Best Left Alone and now they are all gone. Thus leaving the dragon to it's own devices and allowing it to come up with new roles for itself. So now it supervises scavenging operations in the ancient's city, as seen here, exhorting it's minions to move faster before the Horrors come out. Β The dragon also takes a giant cut from the gift shop sales to the touring pilgrims who come to see the marvels of the ancient's city.

Hmmm, if the light from underneath had been green instead of red, I'd have thought this was a scene from inside Minas Morgul.

Very nicely done.

I think any "ultimate creativity" is built from the scraps of old inspirations. The fantastic must be built upon elements of the familiar. Still, I bet this was one of the most unique entries. This photo really tells a story. For me at least, looking at it makes me want to know more of the story.

Aw, well, Voltron never looked this awesome. I like that the dragon has a much less gritty feel to it than the rest of the piece. Like he's untouched by the dirt and grime of the people.

GeomancerEDG [2011-11-03 09:11:09 +0000 UTC]

The Voltron lions have nothing on a dragon.
Anyways, love this piece. The various color contrasts create a clear divide in the sections while two of those contrasts create a smooth foreground/background separation that accentuates the focal piece.* The organic shapes and the flow of the wings also creates a visual contrast with the otherwise vertical nature of the composition.**

*which is just my attempt at a fancy way of saying the red works for the foreground, the blue works for the background, and the gold on the dragon creates a clear sense of depth between the two while standing out on its own.
**which is just FURTHER my attempt to say the fact the dragon spreads out catches the eye.

Essentially, it's a primary color scheme. Which was seen in many successful classical works, particularly when they were going for mythologic or religious themes. So I figured it might work out to give this that same sort of feel.

Now that you're an art director I noticed that your busy schedule has robbed the amount of time spent on your recent paintings, up until this one. This is awesome! this is the reason why I added you to my deviant watch! kinda reminds me of Bahamut from final fantasy X. The people walking on the bridges add so much story opposed to the usual pretty dragon posing painting that most artist do these days. (myself included 0_o)
btw, I hate you and your goddamn batman talent!!

Yeah, the art director gig did take some adjustment. The last few things I've posted have been concept art, rather than illustration, so they had to be faster. I'd debated posting that stuff at all, but it seemed appropriate for Halloween time.

It's totally sucks when you create something and the only way to put it into a view that others understand is by comparing it to other things pre-existing. D: Also, Frumples, the Kitten Eater is a trophy worthy name. Just those poor poor kittens..

Side note my brother named one of his cats Torgo, the Baby Maimer. These names I tell you. Gold.
