Description
I love rendering challenges. Especially weird light-bendy stuff.Refractions are delicious rare treats for my stare-balls. Eyes. Whatever. I'll call things what I want. Don't you judge me. I'm an ARTIST.
When Wizard's of the Coast asked me to create a sphinx forming from a waterfall, I squealed like an extra-greedy pig dropped on a mountain of bourbon-soaked Twinkies. Then I panicked, because HOW?
Something about the uncertainty and impending "Sink, Swim, or be consumed by the unspeakable tentacled horror at the bottom of the lake" is like the thrill I've heard others describe they get from stupid-dangerous thrill seeking. You know, like Base-jumping, Russian roulette, making eye-contact with a clown. (Did I mention the clown has no pants on?)
I'm sure there's a fancy-sounding psych-lingo term for a person who masochistically delights in making their workday super-extra WTF complicated. I imagine it ends in "opath." I also imagine I'd be the person with an olde-timey crosshatch portrait in psychology books under the heading "The untreatable case of Steve Argyle, Class 7 (whatever)opath." <-- This will probably also be the name of my art book.
For Magic the Gathering
Art Directed by Cynthia Sheppard
No basements were harmed in the making of this painting. ...Okay, there was that one basement that drown. (Sorry Kat! Who knew it was so hard to sculpt water into a sphinx shape?)

Thank you! I always wonder if people even notice my word-frothing, let alone like it. You rock!

Word-up, son!!! Who needs skydiving when we've got art?
I am glad to know I'm not the only one who gets like that. Perhaps it's actually a *normal* part of the creative process. No matter what it is, just know you're not alone in experiencing that peculiarly shriek-with-joy/shriek-with-fear feeling. I believe the professional term for this is "being an artist".
No matter what it's called, you hit this one outta the park. Fantastic job on a hard-ass subject!!!

Thanks Newton! Your work is a great deal of what inspired my attention to detail! I'd stare at your pen and ink mechs and starships for hours, just wondering what every little part did, and how you managed to make everything look so... right.
Thanks so much for your kind words, and even more for the many years of inspiring artists like me!

Steve, thank you for your wonderful words. I'm truly humbled to know that in some small way, my work has been of help to you.
I'm also thrilled. Why? Because it gives me the chance to ask an impertinent question: As I recall, you're here in Utah as well, right? I'd love to learn what you have to teach me. Your digital art style is so mature, so what I want to bring to my own artwork. Would you consider showing me some of your techniques? I'd be super-grateful. I feel like I let videogames rob me of both time and opportunities to grow.
I'd appreciate it if there was some way for me to learn digital painting techniques from you. I know it's a lot to ask, but honestly I believe you could help me stop floundering around, and get some real work done. Give it some thought, okay? Either way, thanks a million - my evening is *made* knowing that my work has inspired you!

I read your entire description out to my Stream and had them in stitches. A+ work and words! Really love the rendering on this, especially the wings and the smashed pillar.

Thank you Battleferrets! Turns out words are easier when I'm not also trying to do a dozen other things at the same time. I've been considering pre-recording the lesson part of Sketch n' Skotch, then using the stream just for doodles, Q&A, and reveiws.
