Description
This particular cult of vampires cut themselves. Now I know what you're thinking. "How emogoth is that? Do they wear mascara and cry themselves to sleep over a bottle of Robotussin and some feux-obscure band that sounds a bit like music itself is crying?"But no. We're taking vampires back, damnit. These guys are not f-ing around. They cut themselves as a wager with their lives. If they do not succeed in thier task, and feed, they die before dawn.
That is totally metal.
On a side note, this painting reminds me of "the Resisty" from Invader Zim. If you've seen that episode, I'm sure you'll see what I'm talking about. If you haven't seen Invader Zim, then how is there any meaning in your life?
For Magic the Gathering. Art Directed by Jeremy Jarvis.

Thanks for creating such an awesome looking card, or rather I should be saying, thank you very
much for creating so radical and kick-ass cards. ^- ^
I hardly ever play MtG, but I enjoy collecting the cards because the artwork is always so awesome!

I just found this card in one of my booster packs that I bought today, and I thought, he's one wicked looking vamp. I cycled him into my red/black deck very promptly. I collect the cards for the art just as kuch as to play. I love this piece. Thanks for the time and effort you put into it! ^^

I'm kinda proud I know this card, it's in the deck of Sorin, the vampire guy at the campaign (Xbox download Magic).

I wasn't thinking anything "emogoth" at all actually. My entire thought was "OMG THAT IS SO F*ING BADASS!!"
And then I went "DUDE, THESE GUYS ARE JUST EPIC" when I read your comment about the cult. Very serious stuff they undertake, which makes for one badass picture!

This picture does funny things to my insides......
It's made of f*cking awesome and f*cking win.
You've made me so happy! Death to f*cking sparkly vampires! Bring hard core and evisceration back! We want vampires who gut things with their bare hands! Vampires who go on murderous rampages and don't stop until the sun comes up, or ever at all!

Yup, they've already previewed the card. 2/2 for 1 black, deals 1 damage to you per turn if your life is over 10. (If I remember right.)

Lol, right. Forgot about the spoiler.
anyway it's "At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 1 life unless an opponent has 10 or less life." (MTG salvation)
Thank you.

Sometimes they do their own color/contrast tweaks on the artwork to better fit the card. But I don't actually have their final version.

Thinking of vampires, this reminds me of how much I'm looking forward to Zendikar! This piece is awesome, and I'm crossing my fingers to get the new Chandra you did the art for as well.
How much creative leeway are you given with this stuff? Do all the artisits just get general themes for someone to sift through later, or do you all get a whole storyboard/specific layout sort of thing for these pieces that tells you exactly how things should look?
π: 0 β©: 1
SteveArgyle In reply to NickCorbell [2009-09-30 14:53:15 +0000 UTC]
We usually get a paragraph or two on what the card art should look like. Along with some preliminary flavor text, and the card color.
But it's not set in stone. Often, I work from their descriptions. But the art director has always been very receptive to alternate ideas. So long as the work is cool, and the message comes across, we have quite a bit of creative leeway.
