I bet you could, I've seen your pastel work. Your strength is creating something from reference (like your humming bird, which is very good by the way) right? I am the same way but what I find that helps me is looking at other artist's work and detailing, even use animals that have similar textures like reptiles. Combine all your resources and keep at it and I guarantee you'll do even better than this piece.

The background is epic and the dragon looks pretty awesome...can't quite make out the rider but what I can see does look rather cool. I love how you've done the wings what with the tatters at the bottom.
