This is one of the most basic and original fears of mankind, you know? Before science and reason began explaining the natural world tornadoes and lightning storms turning the sky into a void into which a man can fall preyed on our psyches ever since before we could even be called homosapien. Fire from the sky, fire from under the ground broiling out in gouts of red hot liquid stone and impenetrable, lung-burning black smoke so thick and full of friction it's lit from within with blue lightning bolts; a terrible demon to be appeased, the terrors of the natural world governed our nightmares. They've been with us for so long that they've become a part of us. They've been part of us even longer than the mythology of daring to consider imagining the ability to oppose these terrible gods with the power of men like the heroes of Greek fiction.
That's the power pictures like these have. They take our primitive fears, the fears that governed the creations of countless religions and other mythological explanations for the world, and bring them back. It's not just a storm: it's a god. An inexorable, powerful god and it's vengeful.
This has been the human story for as long as there've been humans! It takes us all the way back to the Epic of Gilgamesh; the stories of supermen matching wills with the gods. No matter how far we advance and explain our world, our nightmares are still the same and our dreams of killing the manifestation of fear are always tucked away in our subconscious.
Anyway, that's what your painting reminded me of.
